GOINGGLOBALBy now, we’ve all had it drummed into our heads that

growth is essential to company survival and that you can’t make money when sales are declining. There are many avenues to reach growth, and there’s one that is often overlooked: global sales.

You can cite many reasons for not focusing on international opportunities. It pulls us out of our comfort zone, or we don’t know how to get started. Fortunately, for us in South Central Pennsylvania, we have a critical resource available to alleviate these concerns. This year, the World Trade Center Harrisburg is celebrating 25 years of service to companies here in the Capital Region.Through its programs, events, seminars and one-to-one consulting services, World Trade Center Harrisburg makes a seemingly complicated system easy to navigate.

As one of Pennsylvania’s Regional Export Network (REN) partners, World Trade Center Harrisburg brings state resources at no cost to any company seeking assistance. Pennsylvania contracts with 15 existing business consultants in all corners of the world as “trade representatives” to assist companies in finding global markets. These trade representatives are on the ground opening markets for Pennsylvania products, and periodically the representatives come here for face-to-face meetings with company leaders.

MANTEC has been a proud partner of World Trade Center Harrisburg throughout its 25 years. Particularly noteworthy in this 25th year, World Trade Center Harrisburg will dedicate and occupy the new “World Trade Center Building” in downtown Harrisburg. Most importantly, consider the opportunities you have to incorporate international sales as a key component of your business growth strategy! Talk with MANTEC or WTC Harrisburg about how you can “go global.”

Sometimes a true contribution goes beyond writing a check.

Sometimes it’s collaboration and commitment to a common goal that makes all the difference. And when two organizations share faith and determination it seems nothing can stop them.

Last year the Katallasso Family Health Center (FHC), a faith-based nonprofit that has been operating since 2013, partnered with the York Rescue Mission to fill a void for Mission clients, a free, on-site health-care facility.

“The mission of Katallasso is to pull together churches and para church organizations in order to take care of social needs....so this collaboration is a natural manifestation of that mission as we come alongside the York Rescue Mission to support their efforts,” added Brian Kreeger, President and Executive Director at Katallasso.

The partnership has been a blessing, according to Matthew Carey, CEO at the York Rescue Mission. “This has been a natural progression of the services we want to offer clients,” Carey said.

Continued on Page 8.

In the past, the medical needs for the men, women and children, who are programmatic stays at the Mission, would have to be met elsewhere which meant finding rides to the emergency room, lots of extra paper-work and long wait times. Additionally, this on-site healthcare center provides the personal level of care needed in these unique situations.

Mission program participants, typically about 50 men and 30 women and children, receive services that include family practice, associated labs and wellness check-ups.

Renovations and equipment purchases, a portion of the center’s first-year operations, were made possible by grant funding from the York County Community Foundation and WellSpan Health.

Please visit the Mission and Health Center websites or social media pages to find out more about these two local organizations or to make a donation!

The Health Center is a non-profit organization that provides faith-based healthcare to those who are uninsured, under insured or living in poverty.

Katallasso Family Health Center (FHC) is a non-profit organization which opened in January 2013. “We work to be a living example of Jesus Christ, interacting with people in a way that meets them where they are in the midst of any circumstance.”

Katallaso in Greek means reconciliation. At Katallasso Family Health Center, reconciliation is at the core of what they aspire to do. By building trust through aggressively sought out relationships they will work to help people reconcile with God, family, Church, and their neighborhood, using a biblical model. They believe that these four relationships fully functioning together allow people to live a fulfilled life stretching a person beyond what they believe they currently are capable of doing. This will all be done through the vehicle of health care and wellness programs.

The York Rescue Mission began in 1962 with the objective to offer food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance for the poor and needy of York County. We have continued to develop this vision for over 53 years.

The Mission has been meeting the needs of the community for more than half a century. In addition to addressing physical needs, they also serve struggling neighbors emotionally, practically, and spiritually. The ultimate goal is transformation from the inside out.

Their goal is Service above Self and to be Christ-like; inviting men, women and children to accept the Savior whom God sent into the world (John 3:16). The Mission meets the basic human needs of the many they serve, as well as equip, train, nurture and guide them toward a better quality of life.

In 1990, Tom Potter, President of Datum Filing Systems, made a call to

York County’s Economic Development Corporation, inquiring about York County as a potential location to relocate the business he owns and runs with his brothers, Chris, Bill and Steve.

Operating as Datum Storage Solutions, the company is a producer of storage solutions for commercial, industrial and government use.

Fast forward to 2016 to find that not only did the Potters relocate their business (and families) to York County, but have since expanded manufacturing operations twice. Datum’s first location in York County was a newly constructed manufacturing facility on Borom Road in the City of York’s Business and Industry Park. The Economic Development Corporation was pleased to facilitate two economic development loan programs which reduced Datum’s borrowing cost. The company outgrew that facility and constructed a facility on Church Road in Manchester Township around 2000, and utilized tax-exempt financing through the York County Industrial Development Authority.

In early May 2016, Datum Filing Systems closed on a $3,570,000 tax-exempt bond issue via the YCIDA. Datum will use the financing provided by Wells Fargo, to construct a 75,000 square feet plant addition and acquire a press brake.

At the end of Datum’s first year operating in York County, its employee count hit the mid-thirties, which has tripled to date. The company anticipates creating an additional 25 jobs within the next three years.

Even though that first call from Tom Potter was almost 25 years ago, YCEA staffer, Kenetha Hansen remembers it well. Looking back, Hansen realizes that relocations involving the relocation of a multi-family member owned business like Datum’s are rare. Hansen recalls that “Tom was very intent on doing what was best for the company, as well as, his and his brothers’ families. I really respected that, and am thrilled that the Potter family chose York County for both.”

Tom Potter, President, adds, “Since 1992 York County has been a great home to Datum and all the Potter families. We have found excellent employees, who are a key to our success, and with the help of Kenetha Hansen and the YCIDA and YCEDC, we have been able to continually grow our business. We are looking forward to the next 25 years.”

I became a SCORE mentor because I wanted to make York a better community by helping entrepreneurs,” says Susquehanna

SCORE mentor, Warren Bulette. Bulette’s vast Fortune 500 finance experience made him a senior advisor for start-ups needing to understand cash flow. Susquehanna SCORE is all about helping start-ups. It’s the region’s leading provider of start-up education and free, confidential one-on-one new-business mentoring.

Some SCORE mentors were first SCORE clients. Beth Fowler, of Home Staging by Beth Fowler, agrees, saying “I came to SCORE in 2003 as a client. After I saw and experienced that SCORE gave me the information I needed, without hype or up-sales, I wanted to be a part of the organization.”

Steve Quinley, owner of Treysta Technology Management, agrees. He worked with SCORE mentors when he started his first business. “I never forgot how they helped me and wanted to do the same for new entrepreneurs.”

Do you have what it takes to enjoy being a SCORE mentor?Go to www.score.org, click on Volunteer and fill out a simple form. And soon SCORE will call you to learn more about your interests. SCORE’s office is in the Goodling Building of the HACC-York campus on Pennsylvania Avenue, just north of Route 30.

On-Line Publishers: 50plus EXPOsFor the 14th year, OLP Events will partner with

community businesses and organizations to bring a wide range of resources to York’s baby boomers, seniors and caregivers all in one location: the York County 50plus EXPO, returning to the York Expo Center Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Presented by OLP Events, the York County 50plus EXPO directly connects more than 90 exhibitors—in travel, housing, medical services, nutrition, home improvements, finances, healthcare options and more—with citizens they serve.

For companies looking to reach new people in this niche market, the 50plus EXPO is an excellent venue. Not only does the 50plus EXPO build relationships in a comfortable atmosphere through face-to-face communication, but participating businesses can also brand their company in the community through company mentions in the extraneous media used to pre- and post-promote the event.

The 50plus EXPOs also create strong partnerships through sponsorships with a range of sponsorship opportunities available. It’s a collaboration that provides worthwhile benefits to potential sponsors by listening to what they are looking for in a sponsorship. OLP Events often creates a sponsorship tailored to an organization’s specific needs.

Bill Yanavitch, SVP, HR and Administration at Glatfelter has a secret weapon when it comes to talent

recruitment. Actually, he has hundreds of them and it’s not megabytes or bonus dollars. It’s people, Glatfelter PEOPLE.

Employees play a huge role in the interview process at Glatfelter. Potential candidates get to meet and spend time with personnel from various departments to get a genuine feel for the 152-year-old company’s climate.

“Glatfelter PEOPLE are awesome,” said Yanavitch “They are our best resource and outstanding ambassadors for the company.”

In the casual interview chats, employees have the opportunity to tout the advantages of working in the values-based Glatfelter culture which includes dedication to preserving the environment, social responsibility, and community involvement.

“We have a strong commitment to our values which translates to a better working environment, better recruitment and a better community in general,” Yanavitch said.

Of course, like most companies, Glatfelter does rely on traditional sources for talent recruitment such as colleges, alumni associations, networking and varied internet tools and products like LinkedIn and Indeed.

At the end of the day however, it’s those employee recommendations and the natural allure of the community and surrounding area that prove to be the platform on which potential employees make their decision.

How could someone not fall in love with the beauty of central PA? Toss in the incredible variety of arts, dining and recreation choices, and the whole package comes together. Yanavitch feels that York County and

surrounding areas offer a robust environment with advanced educational options and healthcare as well.

“We have amazing architecture, rich history, and a community dedicated to investing in infrastructure. Candidates are definitely intrigued with the area,” added Yanavitch. “We’re also close to major cities and all that they offer. We don’t just sell York, we sell the whole package.”

The Glatfelter executive is also quick to point out that local resources like Creativity Unleashed help solidify and persuade candidates that central PA is the best place to work and play in Pennsylvania.

Transplant employees at Glatfelter aren’t shy in bragging about their relocation choice. Once settled, whether they’re city dwellers or suburbanites, Yanavitch has had nothing but positive feedback and high satisfaction ratings from his employees. Working for a reputable, values-based company doesn’t hurt either!

It Takes a Village…By: Kenetha Hansen, York County Economic Alliance

In 2015, the Economic Alliance received over 300 requests for financing and/or technical business assistance. Our staff

responded to each request with applicable programmatic information. Approximately 50 of these requests were referred to one of our business assistance partners. Most of these referrals were to Community First Fund, Susquehanna SCORE, Small Business Development Centers and MANTEC. Our partners provide an array of small business services, ranging from business planning and micro-lending.

Community First Fund serves southcentral Pennsylvania by providing capital, business assistance and advocacy to advance business ownership primarily in and for low wealth communities. Community First Fund provides loans to small and mid-size businesses. Community First’s team refers funding inquiries to the Economic Alliance as appropriate, as does the Economic Alliance to Community First.

The Susquehanna, Pennsylvania Chapter of SCORE is part of a national nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of the nation’s small businesses. SCORE volunteers share their expertise and serve as sounding boards throughout the life of a business. Susquehanna SCORE has provided free and confidential business mentoring since 1979, and tailors services to meet needs of emerging and growing businesses. Serving clients in York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Adams and Perry counties, SCORE mentors conduct with more than 100 mentoring sessions each month.

Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) provide one-on-one consulting, training, and information resources to entrepreneurs looking to start or grow a small business. Pennsylvania is fortunate to have 18 centers which operate as a coordinated network structured as public/private partnerships with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and network of universities and colleges.

The Pennsylvania SBDC Network has a range of specialized consulting services that are shared across Centers, including environmental regulations and compliance, technology commercialization, international business and government marketing. York County is served by the Shippensburg University SBDC as the entry point to all of the Pennsylvania SBDC network’s expertise and specialized services. As specialized services are needed such as government marketing services, other SBDC’s such as the Kutztown University SBDC are engaged. The Shippensburg SBDC provides local services out of partners’ offices, including YCEA.

MANTEC is a leading manufacturing consultant in South Central Pennsylvania that was created to provide manufacturers with customized solutions to enhance productivity, profitability and competiveness. MANTEC is one of seven Industrial Resource Centers throughout Pennsylvania. The IRC initiative was created in 1988 by the Governor and given the mission to serve small and mid-sized manufacturing businesses. MANTEC consults in the areas of process improvement, new market development, strategic planning, just to name a few. The Economic Alliance and MANTEC have entered into a strategic partnership to better serve our manufacturing business community.

The Economic Alliance enjoys the working relationship it has with each of these service providers. Collectively, we address the needs of York County’s entrepreneurs and growing small businesses.

ADVOCATE

The YCEA Advocacy Committee recently presented a resolution of support to the York County Commissioners in support of the $5 registration fee to fund York County bridge repairs. The resolution reads, in part:

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the York County Economic Alliance supports a $5 local use registration fee as it will provide predictable revenue for the County’s use dedicated to bridges; the $5 local use registration fee spreads out the financial impact as household vehicle registrations are renewed at varying times throughout the year; additionally, PennDOT will collect the fee so there will be no administrative costs/responsibilities for the County; the costs for bridge maintenance are borne by those using the bridges; the fee will not increase, but can be eliminated if other funds become available; and while no one wants to pay more, when it comes to infrastructure maintenance, inaction costs more than action;

IT IS HEREBY FURTHER RESOLVED that the York County Economic Alliance directs this Resolution to the attention of the Honorable York County Board of Commissioners and to work for the support thereof.
