We have taken our inspiration for this season from thegreat county of Yorkshire: its people, its landscapes and itsstories.

Across the year we hope to show as many different facesof the county as we can and we invite you to delve intothe Yorkshire origins of the work. It will show itself in thesettings, like the great battle at Towton at the heart of ourpartnership with Shakespeares Globe to stage the Warsof the Roses or the night of bombings in York in 1942captured in the Youth Theatre production of WhereShadows Go at Night. It is inspired by our literary giants:two world premieres will be staged in this season, as wetake on one of the great novels of the county, TristramShandy, and one of the great contemporary novelist tocome from the country, A.S Byatt. New voices also featurewith plays from Laura Wade and Tom Wells, and fromtheatre companies such as TongueTied and the FlanaganCollective.

Look out for the Yorkshire Season stamp throughout theseason in the most unexpected places and let curiosity beyour guide.

iSHANDYFRI 19 APR SAT 11 MAYWritten by Richard Hurford

Very loosely based on the novel by Laurence Sterne with footnotes, gratitude, savoury snacks and pregnant pauses.

Members of a teachers Book Club meet to discuss the latest ambitiousread in their season of Yorkshire classics, the insurmountable TristramShandy.

Its fun loving English teacher Susans turn to host and as always, she insists onan elaborate fancy dress theme. As the friends gather dressed as charactersfrom the novel, excitement builds about meeting the groups newest member. After all, he was the one who suggested Tristram Shandy in the first place!

However, this is no ordinary cosy night in with a good book as the eveningtakes some extraordinary twists and turns. As confusion mounts and hilarityensues, the meeting descends into debauched absurdity and this cunningcomedy becomes as saucy, surreal and dangerous as Sterne himself.

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is a novel by Coxwoldbased writer Laurence Sterne, released in nine volumes over seven years from1759. There will be several associated events linked to this new production tohelp celebrate the 300th anniversary of Laurence Sternes birth.Directed by Damian CrudenDesigned by Jane Linz Roberts

TUE 11 SAT 15 JUNA romantic comedy by Terence Rattigan

A beautiful romantic comedy from the writer ofThe Winslow Boy.

Steel magnate John Fletcher has risen to thecolossal challenge of out-producing the Nazi warmachine in tanks for D-Day. He is in the last stagesbefore he can leave the government to get adivorce from his unfaithful wife and marry his truelove, widow Olivia Brown.

But an even greater foe enters the fray: Oliviasson, returning from evacuation, is now seventeenand has joined the rising tide of socialists. He isoutraged at the thought of his mum marrying theenemy. Can John get to his true love? And whowill Olivia choose?

This play comes to York following a run atLondons Jermyn Street Theatre, where it wasdescribed as witty and touching (EveningStandard) and beautifully acted, full of evocativeperiod detail and very funny (The Independent).

WED 26 JUN - SAT 13 JULThis is a fantastic opportunity to seeShakespeares Globe opening a newversion of the first part of The Warsof the Roses here in York before theytake the production to London.

The plays which make upShakespeares Henry VI create aworld without ideology; a savagetime, when the heroes are not kings, but formidable women, such as Joanof Arc, or rebels, such as Jack Cade.

Bold characterisation, black comedy, rhetorical power and, in thepersonality of Henry VI, touchingpathos combine in Shakespearespowerful rendering of a countryracked by civil war.

We will conclude The Wars of theRoses with a production of RichardIII produced by York Theatre Royaland Nottingham Playhouse in ourAutumn Season.

Shakespeare almost certainly didnot set out to write to write a trilogy,so each play can be enjoyedwithout knowledge of the others.

Following the death of Henry V, celebrated for having united England andsubjugated France, divisions appear at the highest levels first betweenthose around the infant Henry VI, later between the two great factions inEnglish politics: the houses of Lancaster and York. Only the young LordTalbot, locked in combat with the bewitching and enigmatic Joan of Arc,seems capable of redeeming a divided and dishonoured kingdom.

The saintly Henry VI is undermined by his nobles, especially theambitious Richard, Duke of York, and by the Kentish rebellion, led bythe charismatic Jack Cade, popular champion and savage critic ofEnglands social inequality.

A bloody power struggle opens up between the kings party, led by thefearsome Queen Margaret, and the Yorkists, led first by Richard, then hissons Edward and that lump of foul deformity, Richard of Gloucester.

  • The Final battle has come and Camelot hasfallen into ruin.

But it wasnt always this way. Arthur, the boywho pulled the sword from the stone, wouldbecome King of the Britons and thefigurehead of a band of knights revered fortheir bravery and acts of chivalry.

As knights and ladies, wizards andsorceresses gather to the fabled round tablewe will hear stories from a time when myth, magic and mystery were woven into the fateof a kingdom.

Discover how Arthur was given his powerfulsword, Excalibur, by the Lady of the Lake.Meet Merlin the Wizard, Arthurs trustedteacher and friend. Learn of the lovebetween brave Lancelot and QueenGuinevere and of the battle which wouldbring an end to the treasured realm ofCamelot.

Created by York Theatre Royal who broughtyou the hugely successful summer showsThe Railway Children, The Wind in theWillows and Peter Pan, this fantastical tale isbought to life with jousting, swords andsorcery. The Legend of King Arthur invitesyou to come and take your place at theRound Table.
