A York Theatre Royal, Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Bolton Octagon production

BRASSED OFFAdapted by Paul AllenBased on the Screenplay by Mark Herman

FRI 14 FEB – SAT 1 MARPassionate and inspiring – this funny and heartwarming drama is a celebration ofhuman endeavour and community spirit in triumph against all the odds.

To coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984, we are proud to presentthis production of Brassed Off.

It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seemsuncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distantdream. But the arrival of Flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy tothe Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse.

Featuring a live brass band playing a rousing score that includes Rodrigo’s Concierto deAranjuez and Jerusalem.

A NUMBERWritten by Caryl Churchill

THU 1 – SAT 24 MAYHow might a man feel to discover that he is only one in a number of identical copies? And which one of him is the original?

A Number explores the subject of human cloning and identity. Set in the near future, wewitness the conflict between a father and his three sons – two of whom are clones of thefirst one.

Through the eternal debate on nature versus nurture, award winning playwright CarylChurchill explores what makes us who we are, in a gripping and explosive drama whichwill feature real life father and son George and Niall Costigan.

George Costigan (Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Calendar Girls) returns to York Theatre Royal’sStudio after his stunning performance in David Harrower’s Blackbird and we welcomeback Niall Costigan who recently played King Arthur in our family summer show.

BLITHE SPIRITWritten by Noël Coward

FRI 9 - SAT 31 MAYThis supernatural comedy full of ghostly goings-on and mysteriousmisunderstandings is a vintage night of laughter and thrills.

Novelist Charles Condomine invites the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to conducta séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he ishaunted by the ghost of his temperamental first wife, Elvira, who makes continual comicattempts to disrupt Charles' marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hearthe ghost.

Noël Coward’s sharp wit, piercing eye for relationships and unforgettable characters havemade him one of the truly great comic writers of British theatre with classic playsincluding Private Lives, Hay Fever and Present Laughter. When first produced, Blithe Spiritbecame the most successful show that the West End and Broadway had ever seen andhas since proved enduringly popular and enjoyable - a true classic.

THE STEPMOTHER Written by Githa Sowerby

WED 5 – SAT 15 MARIt's 1911. What do you do if you're a nineteen year-old girl in need ofcare and support? What do you do when a much older widower, withtwo young daughters, offers you kindness and security? And what doyou do, ten years later, when you begin to realise you have beenbetrayed?

In the character of Lois Relph, Githa Sowerby has created a trulymodern woman, juggling the demands of children, business andconscience at a time when the pace of social and technological changeis fast and getting faster...
