B11 Yorkton This Week | www.YorktonThisWeek.com | Wednesday, November 25, 2015 175 York Road W., Yorkton Phone 306-783-8516 MASSIVE CLEARANCE ON NOW AT WOOD - Kathleen (Kay) Grace Wood. Kathleen Wood, known to her family and friends as “Kay” , passed away peacefully at Hillview Manor in Estevan on November 15, 2015, two months and three days after her 96th birthday. Kay was born on Sept 12, 1919 at the family farm near MacNutt, SK. Her parents, James and Ada Christie, had immigrated to Canada from Scotland and Ireland respectively. Growing up in the years of the Great Depression was difficult, but Kay always remembered her child- hood years and her family with great fondness. Kay left home in 1938 to begin nurses training at the Brandon Mental Hospital. Fur- ther training followed at the Onta- rio Hospital of New Toronto, good preparation for the 42 year career which followed. In 1946 she re- turned to Manitoba to work at the Brandon Mental Hospital. On Val- entine’s Day 1947 Kay met her husband to be, Harold Wood, a young soldier stationed at nearby Camp Shilo. They were married on September 4, 1948 in Brandon but re- sided in Shilo. Life in the military meant lots of transfers: a short stint at Camp Borden in Ontario, back to Shilo and then to Winnipeg. Two chil- dren, Ted and Jean, were born in this period. She was a dedicated moth- er and gave her children the guidance, support and love they needed growing up. In 1956, they left the military life and moved to a more stable life in Yorkton, where Harold had grown up. Kay began nursing at the Yorkton Auxiliary (the old airport) Hospital. In 1960 she did a year of study at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in preparation for two new responsibilities in Yorkton: as Superintendent of Nursing at the new Psychiatric Centre and as Director of the School of Nursing. In 1966 she became director of nursing for the Yorkton Union Hospital, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. Upon retirement Kay was given an Hon- ourary Life Membership in the Saskatchewan Nurses Association. In 1973 Kay and Harold moved to a farm a few miles west of Yorkton. Both enjoyed returning to the life of childhood. Kay was very involved especial- ly with a large garden and a little nursing (now with ailing cattle). Her greatest joy was to welcome her young grandchildren, Jenny and Geoff. They retired from active faming in 1983 but after a short stint back in Yorkton they moved back out to the peace and quiet of farm life and spent the winters in Arizona. In 1997 they moved back into Yorkton for life in a condo. Harold passed away shortly thereafter leaving Kay to spend ten years in the condo made especially enjoyable by a wonderful group of friends. After spending 52 years in Yorkton she moved to Estevan in 2008 and took up residence at Hillview Manor, just a few minutes away from her daughter Jean and son-in-law Dennis. Kay was known as a practical and competent person who was able to get things done. For many years she was active at St. Andrew’s United Church and with the Rebekah’s in Yorkton. She had an excellent memory and enjoyed telling stories about her family and past. These qualities served her well in several tasks of love she took on in retirement - writing a history of the Yorkton Union Hospital, histories of the Wood and Christie families and her own life sto- ry. She enjoyed family gatherings like those at the cottage at York Lake or with friends to play bridge. In later years she was able to travel. Her fa- vourite trips were to Ireland and Scotland where she was finally able to meet aunts and cousins she had known about all her life. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crossword puzzles, baking and a game of canasta. Above all she was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Harold; her parents, James and Ada (Nicholson) Christie; two brothers, George and Gerald Christie and a sister, Eva Jory. She is survived by her son, Ted (Nancy) of Winnipeg and daughter, Jean (Dennis) Bode of Estevan; by grandchildren, Jennifer Bode of Victoria and Geoff (Twyla) Bode of Sas- katoon and by five great-grandchildren, Kendra (Sergio) González of San Antonio, TX, Eric Gusikoski of Victoria and Emerson, Eleanor and Estella Bode of Saskatoon; by sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wood of Foam Lake and Lucille Kotzer of Yorkton and by numerous nieces and nephews. Kay’s family is grateful to Eunice Massett and the staff at Hillview Manor, Dr. Charles Omosigho and the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital for the care they provided in her last years. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre (The Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan Inc., 41 Betts Ave., Yorkton, SK, S3N 1M1) in Kay’s memory. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Sas- katchewan. KOZEY - It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of our beloved Mom, Grandma/Ba- ba Olga Kozey on November 12, 2015 at the Pasqua Hospital in Re- gina at the age of 87. Olga arrived on this Earth August 2, 1928 in Goodeve, SK. A beautiful daughter to Wasyl and Kateryna (Bekesh) Pankiw. Olga grew up in the Goo- deve area on the farm. She attend- ed Halech School for approximate- ly 8 years when a decision came about to quit school to help her family out on the farm as 2 of her brothers set out to join the military. Here now, Olga helped without complaint on the farm, in the fields, with livestock, in the home cook- ing, cleaning and keeping (at her best) all her siblings in order. Olga perfected the art of cooking and baking. Her passion was making dozens upon dozens of perogies and cabbage rolls. Upon her per- fecting the skills of homemaking, Olga was ready for marriage. Meeting the love of her life Peter Kozey, they married in Goodeve in 1950. They settled on the Kozey fami- ly homestead just North of highway 15 between Goodeve and Hubbard, with Hubbard being home. Farm life and working hard was what Olga knew. Never complaining and always working tending to the cattle, feed- ing and milking, cleaning stalls, raising chickens, pigs. All the while raising 4 children, helping out with her live-in in-laws, keeping everyone fed, keeping the house clean, cutting grass, looking after her enormous gar- den, tending to the fields upon harvest. It was a tireless non ending cycle for Olga, with sleep being a foreign word for her. Olga was used to getting up on Mondays at 3 am to do laundry. This was the norm for her. Olga and Peter regularly attended Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Holy Ghost in Goodeve. Olga enjoyed socializing with family and friends. She enjoyed dancing, visiting, playing 3 spot, cribbage, picking mushrooms and choke- cherries and always being the one to have enough food made for every- one - always! This all the while keeping up with her daily duties of being a wife, mom, grandma and homemaker. Olga always had that one stick of Juicy Fruit gum in her purse and always was willing to let another have it. She never complained and always provided for others first. After almost 50 years on the family farm, retirement was in hand and they sold the family farm and retired to the city of Yorkton. Keeping with her faith, she attended the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Yorkton. Upon Peter’s pass- ing in September of 2002, Olga lived in their ‘dream home’ until July of 2006. Here is where she decided to move to her own condo in Regina where she lived out her final years close to her family and friends. Always having thoughts of visiting and having visitors, she became extremely close to Jake Dorish, son of Robert Dorish. It was as she described ‘her boy’ and never a day went by that she didn’t find time to see Jake or at least talk to him. A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 and the Funeral Service on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Fa- ther Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Yvonne Pan- chuk & parish choir members. The cross bearer was Ron Pankiw. The In- terment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Rob Dorish, Jake Dorish, Andrew Kozey, Russel Pankiw, Mike Pankiw and Brandon Krushelnicki serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Olga’s life may be made to the Alzheimer’s Associa- tion. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Vichnaya Pamyat! Memory Eternal! He must have saved an empty corner in his vehicle though, because if he saw so much as a piece of 2 x 4 on the side of the road he had to stop and pick it up! Jim was tenacious and persistent in his hard work and was described to be a bit like a puppy with an old slipper. Once he got hold of a thing, he didn’t let go until he got results. Jim was also known as the bi- ologist and co-author of “Wild Flowers Across the Prairies” . Jim served as a Member of the Senate of the University of Saskatchewan and St. An- drew’s College as well as the local church board. SARADA - James J. Sarada passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at St. Paul Lutheran Home in Mel- ville. He celebrated his 83rd birth- day on Monday, October 19. James “Johnny” was born on the family farm in the Willowbrook dis- trict on October 19, 1932. He was the second oldest of six children born to Fritz and Mary Sarada (nee Skilnick). After completing his schooling, Johnny remained at home to farm with his father Fritz and mother Mary. The fall of 1952 his father Fritz became ill and the family farm was now left in the hands of his mother Mary with Johnny at her side. Fritz passed on in July of 1953. Johnny never looked back. He accepted his re- sponsibility of continuing to help his mother Mary to endure mixed farming and providing a home on the farm for his younger siblings, three sisters and a toddler brother. By this time, his older brother Bill was employed away from home. In

1971, Johnny and his mother Mary relocated to Melville. Johnny sought employment at Morris Industries in Yorkton and continued grain farming. He retired from Morris Industries in 1994 and farming in 1997. Johnny was predeceased by his parents, Fritz and Mary; brother Bill and sisters Lorraine and Lillian and a very special, loving companion Ruth Stoll. James “Johnny” is survived by his sister Agnes (Mark) Porter of Owen Sound, ON; brother Richard (Peggy) Sarada of Yorkton; brother-in-law Bob Giles of Saskatoon; sister-in-law Lena Sarada of Penticton, BC; sev- eral nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends. James “Johnny” was blessed to have enjoyed a second special family, Ruth’s sons: Mark (Moira) Stoll of Melville and son John Henry; Blaine (Denise) Stoll of Yorkton and daughter Elizabeth and several acquaintances. The funeral service was held on Tuesday morning, November 17, 2015 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating. Cantor, Ed Pindus led in the singing of the responses. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Michael Sarada, Justin Komarychka, Tan- ner and Cole Denesowych and Blaine and Mark Stoll serving as the cas- ket bearers. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes or Cancer Society as tokens of remembrance.

It is with great sadness but also a sense of peace that Arnold passed away at the Aspen Villa Nursing Home on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the age of 90. He is lovingly re- membered by his sister Doris Rus- nak and brother-in-law Michael Rusnak, nieces and nephews Wayne (Diane) Rusnak, Joann (Barry) Zapshalla, David (Lau- rieAnne) Rusnak, Richard (Nancy) Davidson, Robert (Lynne) David- son, Kevin (Teresa) Davidson and many great-nieces and nephews. Later moved to Theodore area where he farmed with his Dad. In 1974 Ar- nold moved to Yorkton with his parents and lived on 4th Ave, where he enjoyed his daily walks

to town visiting many local business people. He loved playing cards and taking his friends for day trips to the lakes. Arnold’s unique sense of hu- mour always made his nieces and nephews chuckle. After living on his own from 1983, in January 2014 Arnold’s health took a turn and he moved into Aspen Villa. The staff was very caring and made his stay very comfortable, although, this was a significant change in lifestyle for a bachelor. He shall be missed by all. The funeral service was held on Mon- day, November 23, 2015 from Zion Lutheran Church in Yorkton with Rev. Daniel Moeller officiating. The organist, Verna Liebrecht, led the congre- gation in the singing of the hymns ‘What A Friend We Have in Jesus’, ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Beautiful Saviour’. PLAN NUMBER 6-3-673 CURB APPEAL

GALOREWith curb appeal

galore, this one and a half storey, three-bedroom home, which includes an unfinished basement, will enhance any resi-dential neighbourhood.

The covered porch that shelters the entry extends around the corner to form a small veranda. Inside, the foyer includes a spacious coat closet and leads into the great-room com-plex, where part of the

ceiling is double-height, lending this area an airy elegance.

The gas fireplace in the great room, flanked by built-in shelving, will cast its glow into the din-ing room, as well as the kitchen. French doors to the covered patio will make outdoor meals easy to serve.

The kitchen, with a step-saving U-shaped counter configuration, features a window over the double sink with an extra-deep sill, ideal for collectibles and pots of

herbs. To the left of the foyer

is the laundry room and a powder room is adjacent to the great room, close to the U-shaped stairway to the second floor.

Ceilings on the main floor measure nine feet high.

Upstairs, the mas-ter bedroom occupies a bayed-out area with a dramatic vaulted ceiling that rises to 11 feet. A walk-in closet is located across from the large en-suite, which includes a soaker tub with a window

overlooking the back gar-den, as well as double sinks and a shower stall.

The secondary bed-rooms share a three-piece bath with a handy linen closet nearby.

On the exterior, board-and-batten clad-ding adds texture to the lower part of the facade, with stained wooden shakes on the upper part. Unstained shakes pro-vide contrast on the front porch. Painted trim and decorative woodwork add interest.

This home measures 48 feet wide by 46 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 1,796 square feet.

Plans for design 6-3-673 are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $975 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Snow overnight Wednesday turned walking trails around Hopkins Lake into a winter wonderland Thursday morning.

Quietude

Consultant looks into recess play timeTwo suburban

Minneapolis elementary schools this fall hired a consulting firm to advise officials on kids’ recess, and the leading recom-mendations (promoting “safety” and “inclusive-ness”) were elimina-tion of “contact” games in favor of, for example, hopscotch. Some par-ents objected; recess, they said, should be more freestyle, unstruc-tured. (More consultants’ advice: De-emphasize refereed “rules” games in favor of monitors who simply praise effort.) One Minnesota principal noted improvement — fewer fights and nurse visits now — but as one parent said, her child feels that recess is no longer really “playing.”

Bright IdeasUnapparent Problem,

Solved: Vladimir Laurent (an insurance execu-tive in Coral Springs, Florida) received his U.S. patent on Sept. 29 and can proceed mass-producing “The Shield” — his brainstorm to keep men’s genitalia from dragging on the inside of toilet bowls while they’re seated. Laurent told the South Florida Business Journal that his device was something he “need-ed, personally” (though he’s aware that not all males experience the sensation). The Shield is basically a cup attached to the bowl by suction that allows movement via a ball-and-socket joint.

Latest Human RightsKentucky’s govern-

ment ethics law bars gifts from lobbyists to legislators, but state Sen. John Schickel filed a federal lawsuit in September claiming that he has a constitutional (First Amendment) right to receive them. (The laws were passed after the FBI found several Kentucky politicians selling their votes.) And in May, officials of the American Gaming (gam-bling) Association and the Association of Club Executives complained to the Pentagon that a threatened prohibition

of the use of government credit cards at casinos and strip clubs violated card users’ constitu-tional rights, in that pro-tected activities (such as business strategy meet-ings) take place at those venues.

Can’t Possibly Be TrueFlorida Justice:

Orville “Lee” Wollard, now 60, was convicted of aggravated assault in 2008 after he fired one “warning shot” into a wall of his home dur-ing an argument with his daughter’s boy-

friend. Believing his shot defused a dangerous situation (the boyfriend had once angrily ripped sutures from Wollard’s stomach), Wollard had declined a plea offer of probation and gone to trial, where he lost and faced a law written with a 20-year minimum sen-tence. Florida has since amended the law to give judges discretion about the crime and the sen-tence, but Gov. Rick Scott and the state’s clemency board have refused to help Wollard, who must serve 13 more years for a crime he perhaps would not even be charged with today.

Inexplicable

Christopher Hiscock, 33, got only a year’s proba-

tion after his guilty plea for trespassing on a ranch in Kamloops, British Columbia, in September — because it was a tres-pass with panache. Since no one had been home, Hiscock fed the cats, prepared a meal, shaved and showered, took meat out of the freezer to thaw, made some coffee, start-ed a fire in the fireplace, did some laundry, put out hay for the horses, and even wrote some touch-ingly personal notes in the resident’s diary (“Today was my first full day at the ranch.” “I have to remind myself to just relax and take my time.”) In court, he apologized. “I made a lot of mis-takes.” “Beautiful ranch. Gorgeous. I was driving (by) and I just turned in. Beautiful place.”
