Students with an I.E.P. or 504
If special needs exist (IEP, 504, etc.), consult individual colleges about special programs & discuss options with HHS tutor.
Colleges require substantial documentation to determine if a student will be eligible for special services at the college level.
Once admitted, students need to send a copy of their MFE & IEP to colleges. Request a copy of 504/IEP/MFE from Special Services: 330-653-1469.
A high school IEP does NOT automatically qualify a student for college special services.
Students need to be SELF ADVOCATES. Students must go to the Office of Accessibility on campus once they have been admitted to a college and advocate for themselves!
College-Bound Student-Athletes

Additional things to consider… Don’t let sticker shock frighten you away
from private colleges
Keep in mind additional costs› Books, travel, fees etc.
Look at four-year graduation rates› Can be found on college navigator website
Look at comparative data› Can be found at White House college scorecard
site
BEWARE of PIRATES!!!
Private companies are aggressively pursuing families & for a fee will:
Promise scholarships/financial aid
Get your son/daughter into a “good college”
“Market” your student athlete
Dot.com sites that charge money for a free service (e.g. fafsa.com vs fafsa.ed.gov)
Imply that an appointment has been made
Don’t sink
your own ship by….
Missing deadlines
Submitting a sloppy application
Writing a weak essay
Having an offensive voicemail recording
Having an inappropriate social media presence
Having a weak interview
Earning poor grades
Negative interaction with admissions office
For example…
Students are responsible for knowing deadlines & options
Early Decision › Binding (not all schools offer E.D.)
› Ethical agreement signed by parent, counselor & student
› Student MUST meet individually with counselor
Early Action › Not binding
Rolling Admission› Once application file is complete, response
takes 4-8 weeks
Colleges look at senior year grades!
Colleges and universities inform students on
the application or the admit letter that
admission is contingent on their performance
through the completion of their senior year.
“We recently received your final transcript and we are
writing to express our concern with the drop in your
academic performance. Specifically, I refer to the grade
of a D in XXXXX.
Your acceptance to XXXXX was made with the
understanding that you maintain a school record of high
quality through your final semester. Admission to
college is conditional and for this reason we carefully
examine all final transcripts.
Please submit a letter of explanation for the decline in
your academic performance as soon as possible.”
Admission Office Etiquette
Contact with an admission office is BEST done directly by the student.
Appealing an admission decision is most effective if there is new information: new test scores or a significant accomplishment. It is rare for a school to reverse an admissions decision.
Never make reference to another student’s admission.
Negative interaction with admissions may adversely affect our rapport with them.
So what do we do now?
