Franciscan Works is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty for the poorest of poor children in Liberia through

education rooted in Gospel values in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.

Ebola has been devastating in Liberia and the rest of West Africa; it has has taken 3,376 lives as of the middle of December.

Merrill Kenna, the Executive Director of Franciscan Works/Liberia Mission, will speak after all masses next weekend (location will be announced during mass) to educate parishioners on Ebola and the effects it has had on everyday life in a fourth world country, as well as on the students and their families. Please join us!

The St. Mary's Food Pantry since it's inception, has been fully supported by the Franciscan Friars & Staff of St. Mary's Parish, as well as many, many, giving and dedicated volunteers, who still to this day, continue to serve the needs of our Food Pantry Members. Without our dedicated and loyal team of volunteers, we could not exist. So, as we begin 2015, I would like to say a heartfelt Thank You to each and everyone of them for the gift of themselves that they share so readily to continue our mission. We are blessed and we are grateful!

So often in life, we do not realize how one small gesture makes a huge difference in another person's life. On Christmas Eve morning, I checked the St. Mary's Food Pantry Email Inbox as I do every morning. An email was received from one of our food pantry members and I would like to share the sentiments here with you....... The food pantry client wrote:

"Many people will be thankful on Christmas Morning for some special gift that they receive, but for me and my children, we are grateful, that the St. Mary's Food Pantry Ministry, has made Christmas a real possibility for our family. As a single widowed parent, I struggle from day to day to feed and cloth my children. Even though I work two part-time jobs, I can never afford to buy my children cold cereal. When I came to the Food Pantry on Saturday, December 20, for my monthly shop, I was able to use some of my Food Pantry Points to get a box of cold cereal for each of my boys! Thank you for all you and the kind people of the St. Mary's Church and Food Pantry do to help us!"

The person who donated some boxes of cereal to our Food Pantry, has no idea how they have impacted this family in such a compassionate way! So, know in your heart that each and everyone of our donors, supporters and volunteers make the lives of another a little better! A Million Thanks For All You Continue To Do!

Soup Kitchen—Volunteers are needed to help serve at the Jersey City Soup Kitchen next Saturday, January 17. Please call the Parish Office by Wednesday evening if you can help with this rewarding ministry. A committee member will contact you with details.

SUNDAY READINGS

The 8th Grade Cadette Girl Scout Troop 231 from the Pompton Lakes/Riverdale Lakedale Service Unit is working on their Silver Award. They are once again putting together 50 care packages for the “Smile Bangladesh” Foundation for the March 2015 trip. This non-profit organization helps correct cleft palate birth defects on individuals in poverty stricken areas. They are looking for donations of new utility quilts or blankets no bigger than 40” x 60.” Knitted or crocheted blankets are also welcome. Please contact Barbara Fleming at 973.616.0510 with any questions. Thank you for your help and support!

First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7—Isaiah tells of the Lord’s Servant, who will be inconspicuous, but will not rest until justice is established. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed to be “a light for the nations.” Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38—Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that any person who follows God’s will is acceptable to God, regardless of nationality.

Gospel: Mark 1:7-11—John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a voice said, “You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests.”

In local communities across the nation, the Catholic Charities network provided services that built hope to over 9 million
