Some people were wondering….. Lent is coming and I am wondering what to do with last year’s palms. Palms are a “sacramental” and are treated with respect and reverence. The ashes used for Ash Wednesday are made from

last year’s palms, but there is no “collection” before Lent of old palms. Traditionally, sacramentals are disposed of when there is no danger of desecration or abuse. You can decide your own way of disposing of them with this in mind.

CDA offers high school, college and graduate scholarship opportunities for our members’ families and offers many ways to fill your desire to “give back.” We are aware of the needs in society that are deeply affecting today’s generation, the elderly and all human life. To be effective in promoting good works and making a difference in the lives of others, we join together--pooling our time, talents, gifts, ideas and resources. Our sisterhood and faith become stronger and our works more meaningful. Our next business meeting will begin promptly at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 10. The reception of Holy Communion is at its fullest when we receive the Lord’s Body and Blood under both species. During the current flu and coronavirus outbreak, we ask the community to be particularly attentive to hand-washing and personal space. Please use prudent judgment when greeting others, deciding to receive Communion on the tongue and partaking of the Precious Blood.

Scripture Insights

St. E Melville-11

Lord, Hear our Prayers for

Sunday, February 9

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14) Read

this statement by Jesus and hear it as if He is

saying it directly to you. We expect to hear Jesus

say it of Himself, “I am the light of the world,” as He

does in the Gospel according to John (8:12). After

all, He’s the Son of God. It should take us aback a

little when Jesus tells us that we, also, are the light

of the world.

Jesus is the Light and, for several weeks, we have

heard Scripture characterize Jesus in this way. On

the Solemnity of Epiphany, Isaiah’s words, “Rise up

in splendor, Jerusalem!...Your light has come”

(Isaiah 60:1), complemented Matthew’s story of the

star over the stable. Two weeks ago, Matthew

borrowed the metaphor again as he paraphrased

Isaiah to describe Jesus taking up His ministry in

Galilee: “the people who sit in darkness have seen

a great light.” Christ certainly is the sun in the

center of our Christian universe. Yet, He calls us

lights as well and tells us “our light must shine

before others.” (Matthew 5:16).

How will our light shine? By reflecting His light and

teaching through our works: “that they may see

your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

In this way, the loving acts of service Christ has

taught His disciples to perform become a means of

evangelizing. These acts will bring so much light and

goodness into the world that people will know

instantly they come from God and they will turn to

praise Him. It is by reflecting the light of Christ that

we shine out to others.

Stewards of Creation: February Our time cannot ignore the issue of ecology, which is vital to man’s survival, nor reduce it to merely a political question: indeed, it has a moral dimension that affects everyone, such that no one can ignore it. As disciples of Christ, we have a further reason to join with all men and women of good will to protect and defend nature and the environment. Creation is, in fact, a gift entrusted to us from the hands of the Creator. All of nature

that surrounds us is created like us, created together with us and, in a common destiny, it tends to find its fulfillment and ultimate end in God himself. The Bible says “new heavens and a new earth.” (cf. Is 65:17, 2 Pet 3:13; Rev 21:1) This doctrine of our faith is an even stronger stimulus for us to have a responsible and respectful relationship with Creation: in inanimate nature, in plants and in animals, we recognize the imprint of the Creator and in our fellow kind, His very image. (11/8/14, Scouts)

Living Stewardship Pillar of Service: Today’s First Reading speaks of doing good for all those in need. “Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them and do not turn your back on your own.” Where can you, this week, provide service for those in need?
