CRICKET is a fairly widespread sport in this country!

You wouldn’t be surprised if you knew that the oldest cricket club in Holland was established in 1875, and that The Netherlands have participated in three World Cups, including the latest in the West Indies. Cricket was brought to this country in the 19th century by Pim Mulier, an enthusiastic sportsman from the city of Haarlem, who introduced English sports like soccer, cricket, hockey and track & field to the Dutch. The oldest club in Holland is the Koninklijke UD (Royal UD) which was founded in 1875 in Deventer. The Dutch Cricket

Association (KNCB) was founded in 1883. Five clubs from the 19th century still exist: Koninklijke UD in Deventer (1875), Koninklijke HCC (1878) in The Hague, Rood en Wit (1881) in Haarlem, Hercules (1882) in Utrecht and VOC (1895) in Rotterdam. At the moment there are approximately 5500 cricketers in The Netherlands. Nowadays there are cricket players of all ages and from many different backgrounds in Holland: from 6 year olds to veterans in their seventies, from Australian to Bangladeshi. During the season most clubs employ an experienced player from one of the

leading cricket countries as player/coach. Most clubs hold indoor practices and sometimes indoor tournaments during winter. As from the end of daylight saving (end of March) most outdoor facilities are used for practices to allow a good build up to the season which runs from May – August. The youth section of the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) caters for cricketers on all levels, with

separate leagues for recreational and top cricket. The ladies play in two leagues according to the strength of the team, same goes for the veterans. The older players (seniors, from 18 years upwards) can either play on

Saturday or Sunday. Saturday’s league cricket is mostly for enjoyment, starting at 13.30 and lasting 35 overs each. Sunday’s league includes matches at the highest level (hoofdklasse) through to the 4th division. Several clubs in Holland cater for their fellow countrymen like Punjab, Jai Swadesh, Pakistan CC, Dosti, Asian Shaheen. The KNCB recognises the great importance of these clubs as part of Dutch cricket. Whatever your culture, you are equally welcome at all Dutch clubs. The addition of especially Pakistani, Indian and Sri Lankan

migrants has added some delightful ‘cricket spice’ to the Dutch cricket world. A special role is also played by the business cricket league, in which many English expats from i.e. Shell, but also a team of the Hollindia firm in Nieuwegein, play cricket on the Monday night.
