Can You Keep up in a Fast-Moving Cloud World?Cloud operators are challenged to build cloud networks that best suit their deployment needs and easily evolve as requirements change over time.

To keep up with the biggest and best-resourced players in the market, cloud providers need to embrace innovation in their data center networking. Ideally, this should include dynamic end-to-end networking policy and control, orchestration of virtual overlay connectivity, a seamless blend of physical and virtual environments, and secure deployment through software-defined networking. And all this needs to work across all the different clouds, workloads, deployments and environments that come with diverse customer portfolios.

On the face of it, all that sounds like too much for many cloud providers to handle, which is why we at Juniper Networks has created a single solution that can do it all: Juniper Contrail Networking.

This eGuide has been created so cloud providers like you can understand how Contrail can help you deliver the services your customers want, whatever their cloud and whatever their workload. You’ll learn how security, analytics and orchestration can combine as a cohesive, comprehensive solution, and explore the expertise and technology behind Juniper’s market-leading innovation. Additionally, you’ll be able to access further resources and take a deeper dive into the technical properties of Contrail.

Can You Swim with the Networking Sharks?Every day, cloud service providers face tough challenges in delivering networking that not only suits deployment needs but can also easily evolve as requirements change.

For the biggest players in the market, with their deep resources and expertise, it’s relatively easy to adjust and adapt to serve the needs of all their customers. But for smaller providers who have to balance new innovation with their ongoing profitability, it’s a much more difficult undertaking.

Providing those typical infrastructure services like IaaS, SaaS and hosting is only part of the cloud service provider challenge. What makes the job even harder for smaller providers is the expectation on them to support the performance and scale of even the largest and most dynamic of clouds with orchestration of virtual networks and network services.

That’s why deploying a highly scalable, flexible, reliable and automated data center network is so important for cloud operators, ensuring long-term investment protection.

Can You Meet the Full Range of Customer Use Cases?

Not only does Contrail cover all of these requirements, but by being open-source and using standard protocols and APIs, it enables a multi-vendor approach so that vendor lock-in can be neatly sidestepped. The result is three key innovations:

Container support for transition to microservicesNetwork segmentation, combined with container cluster management systems like Kubernetes, means providers can enable Docker and container networking, and create pods within which microservices can run.

Bare-metal server and VMware vCenter integrationEnterprise customers can easily connect with these legacy environments, thereby avoiding costly infrastructure overhauls or having to remove and replace hardware.

Enhanced service chaining capabilities

Telecoms customers can be supported with dynamic scale-out service chaining, including functions for physical and virtual (P+V), IPv6 and policy-based chaining, health monitoring and seamless disaster recovery.

Legacy Interconnect

Multi-Data Center Distributed Cloud

Physical and Virtual Service Chaining

Hybrid Cloud

Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN)

Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE)

Since 2012, Juniper Contrail Networking has helped us enable the enterprise transition to cloud better than ever before. Challenges around networking and scalability go hand-in-hand, and Contrail helps cloud service providers solve both by deploying best-in-class networking at a scale that always suits them.

The key to Contrail’s success is its ability to handle whatever enterprise customers can throw at it. Modern workloads need to straddle hypervisors, orchestrators, bare-metal servers, virtual machines, namespaces and containers. They also need seamless connectivity between data centers, public clouds, private clouds, legacy environments and branch offices. What Contrail does is act as the networking ‘glue’ between all of these environments and enable a variety of use cases, such as:

Support from turn-up: the whole life-cycle is supported right from the start, leveraging Nova, Ironic and other OpenStack services to

provision base configuration, manage underlay connectivity, along for overlay networking for attached

workloads on bare-metal servers.

Based on open standards: underpinned by Ethernet VPN (EVPN), VXLAN,

and Network Configuration Protocol (NETCONF), Contrail’s philosophy is

easy flexibility for scalable, multi-vendor deployments.

Connecting the virtual with the physical: Contrail uses EVPN

sessions with fabric switches for seamless networking between

physical and virtual workloads, with the same networking and security features applied for both types.

Suitable for greenfield and brownfield: Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) and fabric

configuration automates switch and router set-up, whether starting from factory default or already carrying configured

management IP connectivity.

Fully managed servers: Contrail can provision the operating system, provide

connectivity using VXLAN overlay networks, and connect up existing

configured servers using VXLAN tunnels.

Can You Securely Deploy Workloads in Any Environment?Increasingly dynamic applications need dynamic networking to match. But implementing them through hardware makes them static, highly manual and difficult to adapt to the evolution of applications, whether that’s a change in requirements or new applications being spun up into different cloud environments.

Helping service providers establish and maintain an open, agile and elastic infrastructure has guided the Juniper Networks philosophy to software-defined networking. In the context of Contrail, this means freedom of choice across multiple vendors, interoperability, intelligent automation, always-on reliability, and consistently strong security across all elements, both virtual and physical.

To underpin that security, Contrail leverages Tungsten Fabric, an open-source network virtualization project that ensures workloads can be deployed securely in any environment. It does this by providing continuous overlay connectivity to any workload on every type of compute technology, whether traditional bare-metal servers, containers or virtual machines.

So by bringing every kind of workload and environment under the watchful eye of one security tool, service providers can find efficiencies in the time and resources needed to keep security in place network-wide.

Can You Oversee Operations and Management from a Single Interface?

Automation of the data center IP fabric

Orchestration of bare-metal servers

and virtual machines

There are many interdependent functions and capabilities that all work together to deliver effective, scalable networking. But without a simple way to keep track of it all, it’s easy for networking teams to lose control of what’s happening where. This is especially true of modern multicloud environments, where many workloads are often operating simultaneously in a variety of different locations.

So in order to help service providers oversee all the capabilities Contrail has to offer, Juniper has developed the Contrail Command user interface. At the heart of Command is the philosophy of keeping things as simple as possible. Intuitive and wizard-based, it’s a single platform for the management of every cloud, public or private, and every workload and device, whether physical or virtual.

Command gives service providers automated workflows that save valuable time and resources, such as:

Can You Reliably Deliver Innovative Services with Greater Agility?

Accelerated time to value and improved customer satisfaction through service creation that’s

oriented around DevOps.

Operational excellence and reduced operational costs by using simple, trusted platforms with always-on

reliability.

Lowered business risk and accelerated delivery of

innovative services.

With customers demanding better services and more agility all the time, a key way for service providers to deliver on their demands is with high-performance Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). But this presents some obstacles in putting together hardware and software stacks from different vendors, as well as managing it once it’s up and running.

That difficulty is taken away with the fully integrated Contrail Cloud solution for telco cloud. Built with NFV in mind, it takes the existing infrastructure of a service provider and turns it into a solution fit for today’s cloud challenges, with operations that are simple and automated, and services that are agile and trusted.

Contrail Cloud is therefore a critical element of how Contrail can help smaller providers deliver enterprise networking at the level of much bigger rivals, generating:

From Months to Hours: eBay Classifieds and Juniper ContraileBay Classifieds runs advertising platforms in more than 1000 cities all over the world. But when expanding into new territories, they needed to source and deploy Web servers, image servers, database servers and other hardware. As a result, it would often take several months to get a new location up and running.

In order to speed this process up, eBay Classifieds turned to Juniper Networks for cloud and virtualization technology, across Contrail Networking, Contrail Cloud and the QFX5100 switch. That way, they were able to move towards a more open, agile, software-defined solution, with problem resolution greatly simplified through working with a single vendor.

The results and the positive impact on the business were significant: development environments can now be spun up at will instead of over several months, hugely aiding business response times and accelerating the activation of new platforms. And by lightening the load on the network engineering team, eBay Classifieds can now theoretically support a tripling of the number of virtual networks they use without requiring any additional human resource.

Take a closer look at how Juniper Contrail transformed the networking

and wider business of eBay Classifieds in the full case study.
