Serving a lifeline...for humanity

“When a man passes away, his good deeds will also come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).”Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Muslim.

When you provide a family with the seeds and tools to cultivate their own vegetables to not only feed them but also provide an income, this is known as Sadaqah Jariyah.

This type of charity is continuous and its benefits are reaped by both the donor and receiver, even after the person giving it has left this earth.

Over 30 years we’ve helped millions of people struggling in poverty with Sadaqah Jariyah projects.

We facilitate operations from building a well so a whole village has access to clean water, to providing schools with books that will empower the youth. We also provide livelihood skills to enable people to earn a living.

Jahanara is 41 years old from Patuarkhali, Bangladesh. She was trained by Muslim Aid in business management and received a grant to set up a grocery store. In 2007, Cyclone Sidr destroyed her home and business leaving her in abject poverty. With the Muslim Aid Livelihood Programme helping her earn a living, she is now able to pay the tuition fees to send her two daughters to school and put food on the table.

GAZA

Gaza...our work continuesIn 2014, the Gaza conflict caused immeasurable suffering for its residents.

Over 2,000 people died; 490 of the deceased were children.Before the ceasefire, Muslim Aid was on the ground working along the United Nations and local partners to ensure more reach and results to deliver emergency aid and develop long-term plans for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of services in Gaza.

Our immediate response was to deliver aid to support people’s urgent and essential needs.

Road to recoveryPost-conflict and the fight to survive is not over for ordinary Gazans.

During the Gaza crisis 113 fishermen lost their means of fishing including boats and equipment. These fishermen used to support 840 family members between them. Work is underway to repair 120 fishing boats in order to help them restore their livelihoods and support their family members.

Muslim Aid has included targeted recovery programmes to ensure Gazans get back on their feet. Further food and non-food distribution to 1,200 families is underway. This includes staples such as rice and canned meat and essentials such as blankets and toiletries.

The effects of the conflict has caused immense psychological stress on people.

We have started to work closely with the Palestine Trauma Centre For Victims Welfare and will be providing psychiatrists, social workers and specialised staff for 2,400 children and adults who are suffering from mental trauma.

They will receive therapy, food and activities such as drama, art sessions and plays will be organised for them.

We are also supplying six new mortuaries to help hospitals cope with the increasing number of mortalities.

Talab lives in a tiny house, partially destroyed by the airstrikes. The house lacks basic amenities from electricity and water to ventilation. Decades of conflict, economic sanctions and poverty have taken its toll for Gaza’s residents. Children bear the brunt the most, as access to education and healthcare is a challenge.

Talab’s family are so poor, his mother could not afford to pay for transport to the hospital let alone his medical fees to save his eyesight. Thankfully, he was enlisted under the Rainbow Family Child Sponsorship programme

and was given a donor. Since then all his medical, school and transportation fees are covered. He now has a new pair of glasses to protect his eyes from the dust which was causing further damage to his eyes.

The Rainbow Family team pay frequent visits to his home to check up on him and food is regularly given to the family. And, just like every little child living in Gaza, he dreams the same dream – to go to school to become someone.

This is the devastating reality for hundreds and thousands of children living in Gaza. Before the war around 60,000 children were in need of psychosocial support. This number is growing at alarming levels. Our Rainbow Family Child Sponsorship programme has supported 1,355 orphans in Gaza. During the crisis we sponsored a further 320 children.The support these children receive is a life-line for them and means more than just food, schooling and clothing.Through the programme, they receive therapy sessions and post-trauma psychological support. Recreational days are also organised to help children enjoy activities outside their normal routine. Their carers are also given training on child health awareness.

“Muslim Aid is the only organisation to support vulnerable people in our district who are observing their fast. I am so grateful for the support.” Katisha Ummar, 60 years old, Meerakeny Eravur, Sri Lanka.

We are the only faith-based charity to have a field presence in Myanmar. Since the beginning of the conflict in 2012, more than 116,000 people became homeless overnight. Our field office established in 2013 means we’re able to effectively coordinate ongoing education, livelihood and healthcare programmes and deliver aid for internally displaced people (IDP) living in camps and neighbouring villages. Working closely with partners on the ground, we’ve made positive inroads in renovating schools, hiring and training teachers, setting up and running health clinics and enlisting people in need through our livelihood programmes.

Health Care Centre

In 2014, we built a health centre in Thet Kel Pyin, Sittwe which reaches over 3,330 conflict affected families with primary healthcare services. Equipped with an outpatient clinic, a delivery and an emergency room consisting of ten beds - doctors, midwives and nurses attend to patients daily. We also support a hospital in Dar Paing and have started a phased delivery of medical supplies to our two mobile health clinics.

Food Security

IDPs in Sittwe are unable to leave their camps due to movement restrictions placed upon them. This means they are unable to work and buy food regularly. Through our ‘Feed the Fasting’ programme, which delivers food to vulnerable

and poor communities during Ramadan, staples such as rice, beans, oil and meat were given to 20,000 IDPs. Prior to Ramadan, we also distributed food parcels to 9,270 families in need of assistance and 50 kg rice sacks to families in the Dar Paing and the Kaung Taw Kha camps in Sittwe, Rakhine.

Education

Children living in camps have not been able to go to school for almost two years. Our education project aims to rehabilitate children back into education and refurbish schools that have been destroyed due to conflict. This means 3,700 children will have the opportunity to go back to school. Since the project began, students have been given books, stationary and bags. Teachers will also be trained in essential teaching in 2015.

We’ve also constructed a temporary learning space and renovated a school in the village of Done Pyin. Schools in Dar Paing and Min Gun were also given a makeover, complete with brand new bathrooms and furniture. Surrounding areas near the schools and villages were re-developed with new water wells. A total of 19 hand-pump wells have been constructed in different villages.

120 women from four IDP camps are currently being trained in sewing skills, business and marketing management and health education. Women and children are usually the most vulnerable groups during conflict. Social barriers, conflict and poverty means they become less empowered. Our Livelihood Programme ensures women opportunities to learn a trade skill to earn a living.

Syria...ongoing supportThe Syrian crisis has led to 3 million refugees and over 6 million displaced people seeking humanitarian assistance.With no end to the conflict in sight, these numbers are likely to grow in 2015.

Since 2011 we’ve been supporting Syrians in desperate need of help. Our emergency aid for Syria continues.

In 2014 alone, we delivered food, non-food essentials, hygiene items, educational support, cash assistance and food vouchers to over 37,000 people suffering within Syria and refugees living in camps in neighbouring Jordan and Lebanon.

We are continually providing food and non-food items to ensure Syrians are not forgotten amidst new and increasing global conflict.

Last year, alongside our partners, we started the Beity Orphanage on the Turkish border. This was made possible by all the generous donors who supported the project last Ramadan.

Home to 100 orphans affected by the crisis, the orphanage provides them with shelter, food, education and psychological support needed for a child to grow up feeling safe and loved.

IraqOur field office presence means we’re on the ground attending to the needs of people caught up in the devastating violence in Iraq right now.

Our field officers display enormous courage as they deliver emergency aid which includes food, blankets, mattresses, heaters and water purification tablets to over 42,000 displaced Iraqi’s in 2014 and gives them a little comfort from the everyday fear and struggle they face due to the conflict.
