You have already learned the partitive in another form.

You learned it when it meant of, from, and about.

It is “de”.The forms of it are:Masc: duFem. : de laVowel: de l’Plural: des

When it is used as the partitive, it will mean “some”.

It is to indicate that you are having some of something.

You will use it with verbs such as: buying, eating, cooking, etc.

If the sentence is negative, the forms will change to de or d’ .

She is eating some ice cream.Elle mange de la glace. You all are making some toast.Vous faites du toast.I am having some milk.Je prends du lait.We are buying some salt and pepper.Nous achetons du sel et du poivre.

When you are eating, buying, etc. a whole item, you will use un or une.

She is eating a banana.Elle mange une banane.He is having a croissant.Il prend un croissant.I am having an apple.Je prends une pomme.

When you are indicating that you like or dislike something, you will use: le, la, l’, and les.

I like ice cream.J’aime la glace.We like bacon.Nous aimons le bacon.
