SOURCE OF FUNDS

Annual fund represents donations received from generous individuals, companies and non-profit organizations through our annual and planned giving fundraising programs, as well as a grant from the Kids Cancer Care Derek Wandzura Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Calgary Foundation.

Foundation fundraising events are funds generated through our signature events including Parents’ Quest for the Cure, Dad and Daughter Gala, Don, Joanne and the Coach Golf a Kid to Camp tournament, High Hopes Challenge and Shave Your Lid for a Kid.®

Community fundraising events represent funds generated through fundraising initiatives hosted by individuals, companies, non-profit organizations and other generous groups in the community.

Capital campaign refers to pledge payments to the Camp Kindle Capital Campaign.

Camp Kindle rentals represent revenue generated by renting the facility to community groups, companies, schools and other non-profit organizations during our off-season.

Other refers to monies earned through interest on investments and government grants.

Childhood cancer is a story of many individuals and organizations, many hearts and minds, that have come together to change the course of this tragic disease.

We know the story of childhood cancer is compounded this year by an uncertain economy. It is difficult to ask your friends for financial support when you know they are also struggling.

Trying times like these place additional stress on our families, who are already suffering financial setbacks. On average, families spend about 38 per cent of their annual household income on out-of-pocket expenses related to their child’s cancer care.

With you at our side, we have been able to offer our programs and services at no cost to families for more than 20 years. Thank you. Your generosity offers the families we serve both tangible and moral support, helping them to heal – body, mind and spirit.

We are proud to share our 2015/16 annual report. The stories you find here are just snippets of larger stories YOU helped shape. They are but a few of many. We encourage you to visit us online at kidscancercare.ab.ca for the complete stories, so you can see how you are changing the story of childhood cancer.

With warmth and gratitude,

Christine McIver, M.S.M., CFRE Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Darrell Graham Chair, Board of Directors

INVESTMENT IN PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Camp and Outreach programs demonstrate our commitment to children and families affected by cancer, including summer camps and spring and fall weekend camps at Camp Kindle as well as year-round outreach programs, such as the Teen Leadership Program or Cooking and Caring. These programs are designed to help children and families find support in a community that understands.

Research is the foundation of successful cancer treatments. With your generous gifts, we supported Experimental and Applied Therapeutics research at the Childhood Cancer Research Program at the University of Calgary (U of C) and Alberta Children’s Hospital. In 2015, the Kids Cancer Care Foundation Chair in Child and Family Cancer Care was also established at U of C’s Faculty of Nursing.

Education Support and Scholarships help level the playing field for survivors and their families and actively support young people, disadvantaged by cancer, throughout their primary and secondary school years and during their post-secondary studies. In 2015, you helped us to award scholarships to survivors pursuing a post-secondary education and launch a tutoring program through our new Education Support Program.

Hospital programs help to ensure that Alberta children receive the specialized care they need right here in Alberta. Kids Cancer Care’s hospital programs help the Alberta Children’s Hospital to recruit and retain the best medical staff, fund an international pediatric oncology residency training program and to offer programs such as family education, bereavement, Look Good Feel Better and Beads of Courage.

Volunteers are at the heart of Kids Cancer Care. Our investment in our volunteer program was returned many-fold in 2015 with more than 300 volunteers giving 20,065 hours at our Camp and Outreach programs and at our fundraising events.

Public awareness and education includes programming associated with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, along with the publication of our annual report, newsletters, website and videos to build awareness and support.

Acquisition of property and equipment primarily includes land improvements, upgrades to the water treatment system, renovations to the Music Hall, the addition of staff housing and an administration office at Camp Kindle, along with equipment to support our Camp and Outreach programs.
