all village drivers to please havea little respect and give a littletime when passing horses in andaround the village. Kerry nowwears a video camera and willreport any one who is deemedto pass her horses in an unsafemanner.We have many horses in the

village and some new ones movingin this year.After a recent near miss with the

village taxi driver (it is on camera)Kerry is asking all drivers toPLEASE PASS WIDE & SLOW.When a car approaches from theopposite direction you would pullin or at least allow it to do the same.Just because you can fit next to ahorse does not mean it is safe topass.While the horses in the village

are all brilliant with traffic it onlytakes one driver to upset them andfrighten them for life. HORSESREACT to silly things like a birdflying out of the dyke or a crisppacket blowing across the road! Are you leaving enough space

between your car and the horseyou are passing? What about if thehorse was to jump sideways?

But perhaps you willsee that by the time you have readthis letter, just how apt andpowerful these words really are.There are many people living

within our parishes that oncepracticed their faith but have given

up for hundreds of differentreasons. There are alsothose who rememberthe days when theyattended Churchregularly, and evenenjoyed the experience.There are also thosewho believe that theyhave outgrown theconcept of religionand moved on,even feelingliberated and freefrom any religiousadherence. I amnot doubting thatthese views are

valid,but Ialso

meet lots of people who tell me thatthey would love to believe again insomething greater than themselves,and those who say that they cannotcome back because they havemessed up. Many people simplycrave real fellowship with otherhuman beings.The 20th-century journalist and

Christian apologist G. K.Chesterton once said, “There aretwo ways of getting home; and oneof them is to stay there. The other is

to walk round the whole world tillwe come back to the same place.”Chesterton’s point was that truthmight be closer than you realize,perhaps right under your own nose.Often, like with the prodigal son,truth is found at the end of a longroad back to the Father’s house.Of course, G K Chesterton was

speaking specifically aboutChristianity. In his book “TheEverlasting Man” he contrasts twoways of analysing the Christianfaith. The first is from the inside.The second is from a million milesaway. As he writes, “The bestrelation to our spiritual home is tobe near enough to love it. But thenext best is to be far enough awaynot to hate it.” Often, we find thatsometimes just stepping outside thefront door of your own particularviewpoint, leaves you too close tohave a clear perspective. You canbe standing beneath the awningwhile complaining about the shade.Your proximity itself createsemotional and intellectual blindspots.As Chesterton puts it, “The

popular critics of Christianity arenot really outside of it … Theircriticism has taken on a curioustone; as of a random and illiterateheckling.” Perhaps you get what hewas talking about: Many of thecomplaints and criticisms we hearabout Christianity and the Churchare more emotionally charged thancarefully reasoned. And safepassage to meaningfulconversations with each other canbe hard to find.C S Lewis also navigated this

same terrain. He describes thisjourney in his first published workafter his conversion to Christianity,The Pilgrim’s Regress. It’s afictional account of his conversionthat he wrote over a holiday visitwith his childhood best friend. Ofcourse, C S Lewis based his workafter John Bunyan’s classic ThePilgrim’s Progress. Just like JohnBunyan, Lewis uses allegory tomake his points. But his “regress”offers a glaring contrast to Bunyan’s“progress.” C S Lewis wanted toillustrate that his character foundspiritual fulfilment not by

progressing to a far-off land to befreed from a heavy burden—but inthe fulfilment of a longing thatcould take place only in theChristianity he had previouslyrejected.C S Lewis speaks of making

spiritual progress by turning aroundand retracing his steps. Sometimes,this is exactly what progress lookslike: Turning around and headingback the other way. Think about it,we can hardly call going furtherdown the wrong road progress.Lewis could write ‘The heresies

that men leave are hated most.’ Thethings I assert most vigorously arethose that I resisted long andaccepted late.”Where are you on your journey?

However, their enforcementpolicy does not allow for any actionto be taken against under eighteen-years-olds who fail to clean up aftera dog they are walking (One of ourcomplainants even suggested thatchildren were being used as a wayof avoiding the £100 fine.). But thecouncil says that if they havesufficient evidence and anindividual was identified theywould speak to them in thepresence of their parents and seekto educate.They have actually had a case

where they spoke to an undereighteen-year-old who agreed to goout under a restorative justicearrangement with council officersto help put up new “clean up afteryour dog” signage and leaflet drophomes about dog mess in a hotspot.The council’s enforcement

officers have been doing work inlocal schools to educate about theproper disposal of all waste. On oneof these organised school litterpicks the children issued acomplaint that some people werepicking up after their dogs, but thenneither disposing of the bags in binsor taken them home to bin.Here is a press release from the

council about responsibilities andpenalties.If you walk a dog you have a

legal responsibility for cleaning up

after it when it defecates. It is yourresponsibility to clean up - not theresponsibility of the parish council,the borough council, the countycouncil.... or anyone else. Everyoneknows that, even if they claim notto!

No one wants to see, smell, orworse, step into, a pile of dog poothat an inconsiderate owner hasknowingly left behind. Dog faecespresent a real health hazard tochildren in particular - they cancause blindness.Failing to clean up after your

dog in this borough is nowpunishable by a fine of £100. In factfailing to be able to demonstrateyour intention to clean up -producing a poo bag for instance -is now punishable by a £100 fine.The borough council is happy to

accept information which can helpdeal with offenders, but the publicis asked not to put itself at risk ofconfrontation in obtaininginformation. Please supplyinformation such as the name andaddress of the alleged offendertogether with a description of themand their dog, the date and time ofthe offence and the location of theoffence, so that we can investigate.All information will be dealt with instrict confidence. Fosdyke will be the setting for avery special event. The Bishop ofRichborough, The Right ReverendNorman Banks will be in our parish

to Confirm two adultmembers of ourcongregation. Mrs CarolMarshall and Mrs BetsyGratton will beConfirmed by theBishop in what is a

very powerful and moving liturgy.The word "Confirmation" meansstrengthening or deepening one'srelationship with God. It enables abaptised person to confirm thepromises made on their behalf atbaptism. It is also a sign of fullmembership to the Christiancommunity. In the AnglicanChurch, the sacrament ofconfirmation is conferred throughthe laying of hands and eachparticipant is also anointed with theHoly oil of Chrism. The service will be followed by

a wonderful Party to welcome thenew members into the full life ofthe Church. Why not come and seefor yourself. All are welcome. The31st May is also the Feast of CorpusChristi. Dear Friends,

‘You are witnesses of these things.’The words of Jesus to his disciplesin one of the Easter season gospelreadings. There he was beforethem, the one they’d seen crucified,sealed in a tomb, and now verymuch alive, eating fish – explainingwhat it had all been about,encouraging them to tell otherswhat they now were discovering tobe true themselves.The Sunday after Easter, with

some of my family, I was witness toa very different kind of event, as Iwas there as Lincoln City beatShrewsbury Town in football’sCheckatrade Trophy Final atWembley Stadium. It didn’t feeltotally right, as some of myGrimsby friends have pointed out,that the Bishop of Grimsby wasthere to watch Lincoln – but thenwhen you’re a Norwich Citysupporter at heart, opportunities togo to Wembley don’t come aroundtoo often!And so I was there, I saw it

happen, and so were 27,000 otherCity supporters, who have nodoubt spent much of the followingweeks witnessing to anyoneunfortunate enough to have comeacross their paths, and sharing whatthey saw and experienced.

The real challenge to me overEaster, however, was being atSpring Harvest at Butlins inSkegness, and listening, witharound 5000 other Christians, to alady from North Korea – a countrywhere Christians are seen as hostileto the state, and to talk openlyabout your faith, risks betrayal,even by family, and persecution,imprisonment in labour camps aspolitical prisoners, and even death.After she spoke we sang

‘Amazing Grace’ together incrediblyquietly, almost as a whisper,because that’s how worship has tobe in North Korea when Christiansmeet together, when you’remeeting in secret.To be a witness in a place like

that takes real courage, real belief. Iwent with a friend for a drink afterhearing the lady speak, and we laterreflected that although we had hada good time, it felt in some ways aninappropriate thing to do straightafter the things we had just heard.It leads to the question of how

would I respond if I were in thatsituation? And the honest answer isI really don’t know – I suspect fewof us do. I hope I would show thesame bravery and courage as thatlady, and as those early disciples, inhow I lived and by what I said,taking the opportunity to witness,like those City supporters, to what Iknew to be true.I hope I would. I hope you

would – because it’s that kind ofwitness that our world, and ourfriends, still need to see from ustoday.With every blessing,Bishop David

While many plants are gearing themselves up for their summerdisplay, the spring bedding plants will soon be over, and it’s

time to think about their replacements. A wide selection of summerbedding plants will be on show at nurseries and garden centres, but,as in April, resist the temptation to buy these too early in the monthunless you have a frost-free greenhouse, conservatory or cold frameto keep them in. The majority of these plants are still quite tenderand you may not really get away with planting them out until themiddle of the month, keep an eye out for the forecasts.Now that spring flowering plants

like wallflowers, forget-me-nots andwinter flowering pansies arecoming to the end of theirflowering time they need to becleared away and the groundprepared for summer bedding to goin. the old spring flowering plantscan be consigned to the compostheap to ensure a supply of valuableorganic matter next year. Or theycan be moved to another part of thegarden to recover and flower again.After the old plants have been

removed, lightly fork over the soil,removing any weeds. At this time,you can add a little organic fertiliseras it breaks down slowly in the soiland will therefore be available tothe plants when they are plantedout. But don’t apply too much, orthey will get a lot of soft growth atthe expense of the flowers. A lightsprinkling is sufficient. Also, don’tdig in organic matter at this time forthe same reason. The time fordigging in organic matter is in theautumn. Most of the tender summer

bedding plants we grow come fromthe warmer parts of the world likeSouth Africa, where the soil isbaked, and very poor as far as the

availability of nutrients isconcerned, and this is why theydon’t require a lot of fertiliser togrow well.Plants like petunias and French

and African marigolds – whetherbought now or raised from seed –need to be acclimatised to outdoorconditions before planting out atthe end of the month or early June.Do this by putting them into a coldframe and gradually opening thetops of the frames more each dayuntil they can be left off altogether.Close the frame at night and keepsomething like some fleece handyto throw over the frames, just incase a sharp frost is forecast.

Liz Wallder’sBook Review

THE FLAME BEARERBy Bernard Cornwell

Ihave become quite a fan ofBernard Cornwell, having readmany of his books and I eventhink that I’ve written a bookreview on another of his seriesabout King Arthur. This is frommy favourite series of Cornwell’sthough. ‘The Flame Bearer’ is the latest

of his Uhtred books, which, ifanyone watched “The LastKingdom” series on the BBC, willbe very familiar. Uhtred was born aSaxon in about 870 ad, but has hishome stolen from him at a youngage by his uncle, is raised by Danesand ends up fighting for King Alfredand family. The series covers hislife with all the women he’s lovedand all the battles in between. Asusual in these books there are a lotof horrific violent battles. This is the tenth of the series and

he’s now an old man for the time (inhis 40s!) and I have loved everybook. They can be very formulaic:Uhtred is always on the losing side,with the enemy closing in, but dueto his amazing strategic planning,manages to turn things around atthe last moment and saves the day.Mostly.

It is a historical novel with a lotof facts in amongst the fiction butit’s so much more interesting thanthe dull history lessons I rememberand much funnier. Remember thestory of Alfred burning the cakesthat he’s left in charge off? That’s inone of the books. The early days ofthe Kings and Queens of Engerlandreally come to life and though noteverything is true, Cornwell keepsyou reading throughout. This bookwas more of the same, with Uhtredactually getting to Bebbanburg toreclaim his birthplace, but as hisViking son-in-law needs himelsewhere and the Queen ofEngerland is also looking for him,will he have time to take it back? This was another great book

from Cornwell that I didn’t want toput down as I needed to know howit all worked out. Now I’m waitingto see if there’s going to be anymore of the series as the storyhasn’t completely finished.

(negative) praise given in lastmonth’s magazine the minutesof the February parish councilmeeting, which should havebeen approved at the Aprilmeeting (there being no meetingin March) had neither appearedon the notice board nor on theparish council’s website at thetime of going to press. the social club before USA(Undying Swan Act) and halfof Paragon 5 turned up to givehost band Phatt Knappii somesupport with a final mass jamgiving the audience a treat.USA featured a new drummer,

and not many bands have femaledrummers, who had only everappeared in front of people oncebefore but proved her worth with herband and in the final jam session.The evening also featured Terry

(Phatt Knappii’s songwriter) and Lizfrom Phatt Knappii performing threeof Terry’s songs as a duo. They’d alsoperformed the night before at theBrass Windmill in Helpringham,where Paragon 5 hale from, and thenagain on the Friday night followingthe Fosdyke gig at the Joiners Armsin Lincoln.
