You “were using” the right tense then you “stopped.”

Americans tend to translate every sentence in the French past with the passé composé.

However, French uses DEUX different tenses to express past actions.• L’imparfait–

repetitive actions descriptive details

• Le passé composé– actions that have a set beginning and end

L’IMPARFAIT LE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ

Tell how things were

Tell how something was

Tell what used to happen over and over

Used to give descriptions (physical, weather, emotional, etc)

Tell what happened

Tell what someone did in a set period of time

Describe an event that happened a set number of times.

Describe specific actions done in sequential order.

L’imparfait if…• The anglais express is

“was/were + ing” form of the verb. Il grimpait l’arbre

• The anglais can mean “used to + infinitive” of a verb J’allais voir ma grand-

mère• The anglais is giving a

physical or emotional description using être. Tu étais petit Elles étaient contentes

Le passé composé if…• The action is a FACT from

the past that had a beginning and an ending time. Hier matin, j’ai lu le

journal.

• The action happened at a SPECIFIC time/ sequential order. D’abord, Mme est allée à

Paris.

• The action happened a certain number of times. Cinq fois, j’ai visité Disney!

1.) find the “nous” conjugation• Aller allons

2.) drop the “ons”• Allons all

3.) add the appropriate endings

Il allait Elles allaient

o 1.) decide if the verb belongs in DR. and MRS. P VANDERTRAMP or if it is conjugated with “avoir”

o 2.) choose the correct helping verb

o 3.) find the past participle of the main verb

o4.) make the past participle agree if the helping verb is “être”

Put the subject + conj of avoir + past participle form

There is NO agreement with “avoir” as the helping verb!!!!!!!!!!
