What is your social identity?
Basic Social Identity theory (SIT)
Tajfel
We have a tendency to identify ourselves as part of a group and to classify other people as either within or outside that group.
We learn how to behave towards ‘one of us’ or ‘one of them’ regardless of how the group distinction was made.
Key termsSocial identity: a sense of who we are derived
from the groups we belong to.
Social categorization: A cognitive process whereby people divide the social environment into ingroups and outgroups.
In-group: A group you define yourself as belonging to.
Out-group: A group you define yourself as not belonging to.
Key termsSocial Comparison: Comparing our in-group
with relevant out-group’s.
The outcome of these comparisons is critical because it influences our own self esteem.
Self Image/Self concept: How we perceive ourselves. We strive to maintain a positive on.
Self esteem: If this is high we will have a positive self image. We can boost this by personal achievement or through affiliation with successful groups.
Key termsPositive distinctiveness: the motivation to show
that our ingroup is prefereable to an outgroup
Favouritism: The practice of giving special treatment (positive) to a certain group (or person).
Discrimination: The behavioural expression of prejudice (physically carrying out an act) against a certain group (or person).
ApplicationsEthnocentrism:
Being unable to conceptualise or imagine ideas, social beliefs, or the world from any viewpoint other than that of one’s own particular culture or social group.
The idea that one’s own ethnic group, nation, or indeed football team is superior to all others.
Stereotyping: A social perception of an individual in terms of group membership or physical attributes
