DESCRIPTION

Our 2013 Midsummer Show breaks new ground. Our goals are to encourage a small group of artists close to our community, ages 4 to 7, by giving them their first show, and to deliver their art directly to our community, removing the perceived barriers of marketability that would hamper other galleries.

Stay ConnectedStay Connected Off the Wall continues building a social media presence. We invite you to join our growing online audience today by liking us on Facebook (facebook.com/OTWDirtyFranks) and following us on Twitter (@OTWDirtyFranks). Our fi rst promise is substantive postings and tweets, such as the fi rst announcements of upcoming juried exhibition opportunities and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the art and artists currently on the Wall.

On the cover, from top, left to right: Skylar Willenborg’s “Rocket,” Jacob Kaplan’s “T.A.R.D.I.S.,” Kylie Grove’s “Heart of Stars,” Carl Kaplan’s “A Family,” Noa Travalia’s “Sea Turtle,” Emi Travalia’s “Tweety.”

Every single one of us is born an artist.

This statement may or may not be supportable. No doubt, someone has done a study. Google the thought and you get a quote from Picasso: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” He’s just the most famous person to have said it. Many artists have conveyed the sentiment, including some realizing why they had perhaps failed.

Children’s art is magical and buoyant because it’s the essence of creation. Unguided, unfettered, uplifting. Until someone says, “You can’t draw that,” “That doesn’t make sense,” “It doesn’t look right.” The point, early enough, is: there is no wrong way to create. From birth, there is a brain; there are emerging fi ne motor skills and the tools of creativity; and there are blank spaces to fi ll with ideas, confl uences of color, imagination come to life.

Young at Art has two goals: 1) to encourage a small group of artists close to our community, ages 4 to 7, by giving them their fi rst show; and 2) to deliver their art directly to our community, removing the perceived barriers of marketability that would hamper other galleries. Off the Wall Gallery has never been a commercially driven enterprise navigating the world as if the rent is forever due tomorrow. We are instead a gallery of art lovers.

This show is humbly dedicated to the art, pure and simple, and to these artists, wonderfully, beautifully naïve.

It’s about Kylie’s love of fl owers and rainbows and animals like that lion looking at us kindly. Is it just a stuff ed animal? No, Kylie tells us, he’s real.

It’s about Carl’s trippy ghost emerging from an abstract work so stealthily, it’s scary. It’s the red ovals staring out of Jacob’s simple line drawing. What are those? Look closer. One hand on your light saber. That’s Darth Vader.

It’s about how Emi, amid mermaids and Tweety Bird, captures the wagging tongues of yelling parents so deftly, it makes every parent think about toning it down the next time there’s discipline to be meted out. It’s about Noa’s passion for color that sings, and her ability to point an iPhone at herself and drain almost all colors from the pixels using refracted sunlight.

It’s about Skylar’s broad pointillism that turns out to be very intentional indeed. In fact, that’s a marble run game, don’t you know?

It’s about you. Take it all in. Take nothing for granted. Accept everything as feasible. And love: the work, the dreamers, the endless possibilities.

After all, art is love. So everyone is born loving and creating. Then the world gets in the way. Well, not at Off the Wall and Dirty Frank’s. Not if we have anything to say about it. Jody Sweitzer Togo Travalia Curator Manager
