YBAs

• “The term Young British Artists is derived from shows of that name staged at the Saatchi Gallery from 1992 onwards, which brought the artists to fame. It has become a historic term, as most of the YBAs are now in their forties. They are noted for “shock tactics”, use of throwaway materials and wild-living, and are (or were) associated with the Hoxton area of East London. They achieved considerable media coverage and dominated British art during the 1990s.”

 • The goldsmiths the graduating class of 1988 became known as the YBAs

• Similar to works from Dada Artists like Marcel Duchapm these artists paved the road for acceptance of contemporary art in Britian in the 1980s

• Works distinguishable by vulgar and shocking tactics . At time of economic recession , political progression and technological advancement with the creation of the world wide web these artists captured their society in their art

• At a time when conceptual art was of not much value in Britain

• economic downfall galleries refused to sponsor their exhibitions

• Self made exhibitions were then adapted resorting to the curation of the first exhibition freeze i

• Not much public interest was shown towards these exhibitions but Charles Satashi attended these and bought many works from Hirst and other YBA

Charles Saatchi is a British businessman and the co-founder  of advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi.. Charles is also known for his vast art collection and for owning Saatchi Gallery, and in particular for his sponsorship of the Young British Artists (YBAs), including Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.

Sensation (1997) berlin, New York, ParisIn 1997 the Royal Academy, which has a reputation as a bastion of conservatism, staged a major, exhibition of their work, Sensation. The exhibition was actually a showing of Charles Saatchi’s private collection of their work, and he owned the major pieces

Freeze was in a cheap alternative space, a London Docklands admin block (usually referred to as a warehouse). The event resonated with the ‘Acid House’ warehouse rave scene prevalent at the time

One of its effects was to set the example of artist-as-curator (in the mid 1990s artist-run exhibition spaces and galleries became a feature of the London arts scene).
