Young Fives Program

Designed for students who need more time to further develop emotional, social, physical, cognitive and creative skillsThe goal of the program is to improve the kindergarten readiness of children who are 5 years old between July 1 and September 1.

Class Sessions

Morning sessions meet from 8:00-11:07

Afternoon sessions meet from 12:00-3:07

New this year - Beginning in the 2020-21 schoolyear, students will be assessed using the new Michigan Kindergarten Readiness Assessment during the first 45 days of school. This observational and one-on-one assessment looks at the "whole child" assessing language, literacy, mathematics, social foundations, physical and motor development.

LPS is working on a plan this spring to provide the time and training needed to meet this new requirement.Look for more information as summer approaches.

Curriculum - What you can expect to see in a Child -Centered Learning Environment:

● Students involved in hands-on multi-sensory learning

● Lots of manipulatives and creative materials

● Children cooperating with one another, making friends, talking,sharing, discovering & learning together

● Students moving freely from area to area, within the classroom

● A predictable environment with lots of routinesand expectations

● A variety of activities: dramatic play, music, art, movement

● Students making choices, planning and carrying outtheir plans

● Teachers supporting purposeful play to promote social andintellectual growth

● Lots of children’s work displayed, shared and appreciatedin multiple ways

Learning activities supporting oral language skills, language comprehension, attention span, imagination, curiosity, cooperation and problem -solving…

because it is research -based and best -practice.

Support Services… Other Things to ConsiderSpeech

● If your child has an active IEP…. ○ Let us know at registration / provide a copy for us

● If your child has an out of district IEP…○ A Temporary Placement form will be signed○ Therapy will start at the beginning of the school year○ We will hold an IEP within 30 days

● Services are delivered in a pull out model.○ Students are seen in small groups or individually.

● When the teacher has speech or language concerns….○ The teacher will contact the speech pathologist for the referral.○ The speech pathologist will contact the parents.

● If you have concerns about your child’s development today, there are options for an evaluation now throughour Early Childhood Program.

Contracted service for the times before and/or after the Y5’s class time

7:00 am-8:00 am $8.75 per day11:07 am-3:07 pm $16.50 per day -3 day minimum use

3:07 pm-6:00 pm $10.75 per dayAM + Y5 + PM $35.50 per day

Registration fees: $75.00 for the first child/$40.00 for a second child and a $50.00 holding fee, which will be applied to September’s tuition.

How Do I Register?Registration begins March 26 at 8:00 a.m. - LPS Board Office

IMPORTANT NOTE: We request that all the information listed below be provided at time of registration:

1. Child’s Birth Certificate (original or a copy is acceptable)2. Child’s up-to-date Immunization Records and Vision Screening*3. Two proofs of residency, with current dates:

Two of either :● Livonia property tax bill● Closing papers for your Livonia home● Rental agreement for your Livonia residence● Notarized Residency Affidavit if you are living with friends and/or relatives **

AND● One piece of CURRENT business mail dated within the past 30 days

4. Current Michigan driver license or State of Michigan ID card5. Signed, dated and completed LPS Registration Form - attached

*These are the only items that can be brought in at a later date due to annual physical/wellness exams**These forms are available in the school office or at the registration office of Livonia Public Schools

Out-of -District Student Policy:

We accommodate LPS residents first, then confirm as many Out-of-District students as space allows.

Out-of-District families must submit an approval form signed by their home district’s Superintendent.

Young 5s Readiness!● What you can do to help your child prepare for

Young 5s!○ Practice safety on neighborhood playgrounds○ Take nature walks and learn about the

environment○ Find letters and words in environmental print○ Take family trips○ Practice following directions, breaking them

down with first, then next directions○ Practice putting on shoes, boots, coats

independently○ Limit screen time○ Talk with your children often, exposing them

to a broad vocabulary and practicing rhyming○ Read together every day!
