memorabilia, and scrapbooks.

HISTORY:

Founded in 1860 by the Reverend William Leftwich to protect the Christian

morals of the enterprising young men moving to the bustling Town of Kansas, the

YMCA of Greater Kansas City is a diversified organization serving persons of all

ages, races, and religions with programs designed to build strong kids, enduring

families, and solid communities. Through the four core values of caring, honesty,

respect, and responsibility aspiring to enrich the spiritual, social, mental, and

physical well-being of members, the organization strives to strengthen families

through communication, collaboration, and instilling good values in children. To

help children develop their fullest potential, the YMCA’s pedagogy focuses on

self-awareness, self-confidence, interpersonal relationships, values, academic

achievement, physical skills, health, and nutrition.

Along with offering classes in fitness (aerobics, cycling, weightlifting, Yoga,

Pilates, martial arts), sports (soccer, baseball, basketball, football), aquatics

(swimming lessons, water volleyball, water fitness), the YMCA of Greater Kansas

City offers various programs and special events for children (including child care,

Kids Night Out), teenagers (in YMCA Teen Centers), and families (Family Fun

Nights). Intent on expanding its values beyond its membership, the YMCA

sponsors annual mission campaigns providing financial assistance to

underprivileged families throughout Greater Kansas City.

As of 2007, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City boasted a membership of over

79,000, with branches in Blue Springs, Independence, Olathe (opened in 1992),

Platte City, Bonner Springs, Lee’s Summit, Kansas City KS, Osawatomie, Prairie

Village, Parkville, and Raytown, in addition to several offices in Kansas City

proper (Blue Springs, Clay-Platte, Linwood, Red Bridge, Cleaver Family, and

Quality Hill).

PROVENANCE

This collection was a gift from the YMCA of Greater Kansas City as

accession KA0728 on November 24, 1992; accession KA0761 on August 10,

1993; KA0940 on February 3, 1997; and KA1001 on July 30, 1998. Additional

accessions have been received as follows: KA1033 on June 30, 1999; KA1269 on

January 21, 2004; KA1286 on September 29, 2003; KA1373 on June 24, 2005;

KA1509 on March 7, 2007.
