Young Professionals! What you should know that no one is telling you

Presentation for Jonesboro Young Professionals Network May 6, 2016 by James Hutto @ValeoMarketing

Forget Your Personal Brand

Why a personal brand:What's your goal?

Focus your energy. No one has time to crush it on every network.

Spend Your TimeOn LinkedIn, if you’re goal is business-related.

Pure and simple.

Practice Better Writing

Be assertive

Dump the passive voice

Drop Adverbs

Write fewer words

Become Better At Presenting

Practice Negotiation

Why Negotiation Matters

Over the next ten years, the value of $5,000 a year extra salary is close to $100k gross.

Negotiating on your house is not the most important financial negotiation, not by a long shot

Change your MindsetNegotiating is not something that is disreputable or shady. It’s not “haggling” - it is negotiating. And in the professional world, this is perfect acceptable…

even expected (if you’re not a sucker).

This is Jan. It is Jan’s job to get you signed with the company as cheaply as possible, but Jan is not super motivated to do so, because Jan is not spending Jan’s money to hire you. Jan is spending Jan’s budget.

Negotiating Never Makes (worthwhile) Offers WorseThere are no exploding offers. If you try to negotiate, the very

worst that will happen is that you get the exact offer they gave you.

You should negotiate all offers as a matter of course. It can’t hurt you!

Never Give A NumberThis is a trick when a hiring professional asks your salary. They

just want to know so they can add 5% and that’s your offer. You are not required to give them this information.

Dodge this question with something like this: “I’m really more concerned with making sure we’re a great fit. If not, then the numbers don’t matter anyway. If we are a great fit, then I can be flexible with you, and you can be flexible with

me”

Use “Interesting”When you get an offer, tell them “that’s an interesting

number,” not a “wonderful” number.

Check with your PeepsBuy time if you feel boxed into your negotiation or need

some time to think it over. Don’t accept a bad offer!

Since they can’t ask about your marriage situation in the U.S. all you have to do is say “That sounds reasonable, but I’ll have to run it by the family.”
