JULY 5–24, 2020

Midwestern values. Tradition matters. Every student participates in athletics. Unwavering commitment to the arts. Endless opportunities to grow, thrive and excel. At WRA, we are committed to igniting students’ passions as they envision futures with no boundaries and embrace challenges with all the hope, strength and resolve of true Pioneers.

YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAMJULY 5–24, 2020

WRA’s Young Scholars Program is a fully-funded, interdisciplinary, intensive three- week residential experience designed to provide academic opportunities beyond those avail-able at most middle schools. The program seeks up to 24 current seventh and eighth-grade students from smaller communities throughout Ohio who have demonstrated exceptional academic ability and genuine intellectual curiosity across a broad range of academic areas.

Last year’s program was entitled “The Eagle Has Landed: Apollo 11 and the Winning of the Space Race.” Using literature, media resources and field trips to various relat-ed local points of interest, students gained a far greater appreciation of this seminal moment in America’s Cold War competition with the Soviet Union. They also created an original dramatic piece which they performed for an invited audience at the end of the program. This year’s theme will be “The Vietnam War: Humbling of a Superpower.” Students will explore the geopolitical background of this brutal conflict, the manner in which it was executed, and its impact on American society both during and since. The war will be investigated using the combined academic lenses of math, science, history, literature, music, and cinematic arts. Like last summer, one major goal of the program will be to have students research and write their own original theatrical production incorporating themes learned throughout the three weeks.

PROGRAM AND TUITION INFORMATION

Through a generous gift, the 2020 program will be offered free of charge. While admis-sion is certain to be competitive, each enrolled student will receive a full scholarship worth nearly $3,000 that includes class materials, all trips and activities, and room and board.

Over the past four years, Young Scholars have enjoyed trips to theater performances, lakes and parks, museums, landmarks, baseball games and more. The WRA campus and its facilities allow for indoor/outdoor athletic activities, including swimming and the use of classroom technology. Additionally, a notebook computer is issued to each student for use during the program.

The WRA Young Scholars Pro-gram is, by its nature, highly selective.

Please visit our website at WRA.net/youngscholars to complete the preliminary student application, download the school transcript releaseform, and access the rec-ommendation form that you can share with a counselor or teacher.

Applications, including an official school transcript, should be completed by May 22, 2020, as acceptances will begin in late May.
