Young Scots Show they Care

May 2010

Over ninety of Scotland’s most inspirational young people will be honoured with the Diana Award by

Anne McLaughlin MSP at the Scottish Parliament on 1st

The award, in memory of Princess Diana, is presented to young people – from all circumstances and

sections of society - who are determined to take action and make a positive change to their

communities and the lives of others. Many of these young people disregard their own difficulties to

help others.

June. Over 1,500 young Scots have already

been recognised by the Diana Award for making an outstanding contribution to their communities.

16 year old Gareth from Port Glasgow will receive an award for supporting his brother, who suffers

from cerebral palsy and epilepsy, as well as volunteering in the Connect Leadership Group. Gareth

said: “I was surprised when I heard I was going to receive the Diana Award. I am honoured to be

presented with such a great award. I’m looking forward to rippling the word and getting more young

people involved in my community.* ”

Anne McLaughlin, MSP: “I am pleased that I have been asked to present the Diana Award to these

outstanding individuals. It is fantastic to see the achievements of so many young Scots who are

determined to make the world a better place. I’m sure this award will spur them on to continue

supporting their communities.”

The cast of Zombie Prom the Musical from Castlehead High School will be performing at the event.

Castlehead School have one of the highest number of Diana Award holders in Scotland, they have

nominated a staggering 73 students all of whom have challenged negative stereotypes of young

people and shown that many can make a positive contribution to their communities.

Maggie Turner, Chief Executive of the Diana Award, said: “We are delighted to be holding this special

Diana Award ceremony to highlight the wonderful work that young people in Scotland are doing. They

represent a growing community who will act as force for good and help build a positive society in

which we would all like to live.”

The Diana Award supports young people through its unique development programme which

harnesses the compassion and commitment of these young people so they fulfill their aspirations for

society.

Some young people receiving the Diana Award include:

17 year old James from Lanarkshire, is a prominent figure at school and is relied on by studentsand staff alike as a peer mentor. James has shown exceptional personal qualities; compassion,empathy and friendship and has developed students’ self confidence. James suffers from cerebralpalsy but puts his condition aside to support others.

17-18 year old Charities Group form Aberdeen; this group raised an astonishing£3000 for charities through fundraising events; inviting their teachers to compete in aStrictly Come Dancing style dance competition. The money will be donated to local, national andinternational charities.

9-10 year old Playground Mentors from West Lothian, the mentors have helped to combat bullyingin the playground by helping children who have difficulty making friends and teaching new games tofoster friendships. They held assemblies to demonstrate the importance and protocol of the gamesbox. The pupils are dedicated to their job and are always there to help others.

memorial to Princess Diana’s belief in the power of young people to change the world. The 30,000

Diana Award holders from across the UK represent the values that the late Princess lived by.
