AUGUST 30 - SEPTEMBER 5, 2012 THE VOICE 25

“I ’VE BEEN a fansince youreleased your sec-ond ever track,One Day You’ll

see,” I blurt out when I speak toBritish rapper, Sincere.

He lets out a modest laugh. “That’s gangster. In fact, that

came out just after I released my

single, That’s Not Gangsta,” headds.

And who can forget that streetanthem?

If like me you were one of theteenagers who religiouslywatched urban music channelChannel AKA (back in the day itwas called Channel U) then thatsong and catchphrase is likely tobe engraved on your mind!

Coming from such humblebeginnings, how did this eastLondon native build his brandand rise to the dizzying heights ofmainstream success?

“Basically after That’s NotGangsta and One Day You’ll See,I decided to make my film, SoSincere, which featured UK rap-pers Wretch 32, Bashy andScorcher. Then I released a singlefrom the film’s soundtrack calledReppin London, which featuredScorcher and D double E.”

He continues: “After that I start-ing working with a lot of bandsand stuff. I worked with an artistcalled Natty to make Once UponA Time. Then I released anothersingle Good Girls Love Bad Boys.During that time I signed to VirginRecords and it did really well.”

Despite his aforementionedsuccess, which included a per-formance at the world famousGlastonbury Festival in 2009,Sincere decided to take a break.

He explains: “My next singleafter Good Girls was a songcalled Pass It Over, but then Idecided to take a break to con-centrate on my mixtapes, because I felt like I was just mak-ing single after single without get-ting the chance to release a com-plete body of work.

“When I decided to make sin-gles again I released Ain’t NobodyLike You, which did incredibly welland resulted in me signing toMercury Records. And today weare onto the new single, Déjà vu.

“That’s the quick two minuteversion of how I made it!”

Music is not the only industrySincere has conquered. TheYoung Entrepreneurs record labelfounder has now launched hisown fashion line, XYE.

“The X symbolises just what itdoes in mathematics - anything. Itcan be anything, it is foreverchanging and we always wantedto make sure that we are currentand fresh,” he says.

“I started my own clothing linebecause I wanted to get my ownstyle across to people who arefans of my music and like what Ido. I want them to share the expe-rience of having fly clothes towear!” he laughs.

Solidifying his passion for fash-ion, he goes on to reveal his top

three style icons.“Karl Lagerfeld, because he

has that one look that he neverchanges. Like how do you wearthe same thing everyday? That’sgangster. Kanye is an obviousone and then David Beckham.”

In a bid to goad him into givingme some juicy backstage gossip,we move seamlessly onto the‘most crazy tour stories’.

“Loick Essien almost passingout at the Wretch tour!” he sayswithout hesitation.

Still laughing, he continues:“Wait, no! Loick Essien was at ashow in Brighton but he keptshouting out Birmingham. Hesaid it like 10 times, funniest thingever!”

On his new single Déjà Vu, headds: “I just wanted to capture agreat night out. You know how asong can just make your night?Well, I want to create that feeling!”

Déjà Vu is released onSeptember 9 through Mercury/Def

Following Rihanna’s tell-all interview with Oprah, JoyceHawkins, the angered mother of the Bajan singer’s ex,

Chris Brown, took to her Twitter page to post amessage believed to be aimed at the Rude Boy star.

“NOT UNTIL YOU TELL THE TRUTHWILL YOU EVER BE FREE! PEACE

SOMETIMES COMES WITH A PRICE.”

Dear Kat,I did not do well on my GCSEs. My form tutor suggested that

I retake some of them but I feel too disappointed to even try.I found year 11 really hard because I had to deal with some

family issues and I think it affected my grades. At one stage Iwasn’t sure if I could even sit any at exams all.

Should I firm it and retake some of the subjects or should I justget a job?

Kynikka, Hounslow, 16

Hi Kynikka,I’m really sorry to hear this. I can only imagine how disappointed

you must’ve felt. But in the midst of your disappointment, please remember that

GCSEs are just the start and by no means the end.You can, as you’ve explained above, retake the subjects you didn’t

do quite so well in, should you wish. I don’t see any harm in doingthat.

Do your teachers know that you experienced a rough time person-ally last year? If not, maybe it’s worth talking to them. I’m sure thatmust have had some affect on your grades.

It’s worth also contacting your college to see whether they’ll acceptyou on the grades that you achieved – with a promise to work harderif accepted into their institution.

Please don’t be too hard on yourself and allow these grades todefine who you are.

All the best,
