JOAN EKAJEH wants to be a doctorwhen she is older.

And the 16-year-old pupil atBlackheath Bluecoats School in southLondon has started her journey to thataspiration in an excellent manner.

“I’m feeling really good, becauseI’ve passed all my GCSEs, and I’ve gota couple of As and A*s to show for it,”Joan said rather modestly. To be pre-cise she achieved nine As and an A* inchemistry.

The Year 11 student, who hopes togo into “either paediatrics, or surgeryof some sort,” has not made her mindup as to which is her preferred univer-sity to study medicine.

However, that choice can wait; hergood grades have given her the

choice of deciding where she studiesher A-levels. “I’ve got two choices:Christ The King College or BethsGrammar School.”

It is a selection that would not benecessary if Greenwich Council hadnot decided to permanently shut herschool, which counts murderedteenager Stephen Lawrence and foot-baller Rio Ferdinand as former pupils.

“I’m gutted that it’s closing down,”said Joan. “It’s been a great five years,I’m really going to miss it. And to behonest, if the school were to stay open,I would probably stay for the sixth form.I’ve gotten used to the teachers, andthe teachers know what I’m capable ofdoing. I’m settled in, so I wouldn’t haveto start over again.”

Talent in the world of sport and entertainmentproves to be a family affair

SUCCESSFUL Siblings

Dear Kat,My boyfriend got another girl pregnant when he cheated on me

and he wants me to forgive him. I agreed to keep talking to him but he keeps pushing for more. He

always tells me that he doesn’t love her and he made a mistake butI just can’t look past it.

I really love him, so this is really hard for me.What should I do?

Tanya M, 19

Hi Tanya,Wow. What a sad and unfortunate situation. We all make mistakes, fact. However, many of us can go through life with-

out ever having to reap any repercussions for those mistakes. Yourboyfriend wasn’t one of those people.

He made a mistake and the fallout from it means an unplanned child andthe prospect of losing you.

Despite how angry you are, you’re not ready to lose him either. Love is ahard thing to shake.

Don’t beat yourself up at the fact you’re still talking to him if this makesdealing with the situation easier for you, but understand that in doing so, it’sprobably going to make it harder to let go in the long run.

You are both constantly reminded of what you had and don’t want to let go.But the reality of the situation is that he has had or is having a baby with

somebody else. Are you discussing this in your conversations? Are you talk-ing about how you will continue your relationship after the fact? This isimportant.

Make sure that your conversations have a direction, especially if you’regoing to continue seeing each other. It’s a tough situation and it’s going torequire a level of maturity on both of your parts.

Be honest with each other. Maybe give yourself some time to think the sit-uation through alone and weigh it up properly.

Let me know how you get on.

THERE ARE many mys-teries in this world yet tobe solved, but I think Imay have cracked a cru-cial one. No, I can’t tell

you the meaning of life, but I cannow reveal how many officialmembers there are in eastLondon grime collective, RollDeep

"The last count was 1.6 mil-lion!" says Roll Deep groupmember, Manga when we catchup.

But all jokes aside, I amtempted to believe that the suc-cessful crew may haveamassed a similar membershipcount throughout their 10-yearreign.

In fact, since the award-win-ning group appeared on thescene a decade ago, some ofthe UK's most well-known rap-pers have spent time 'rolling inthe deep' with the crew, includ-ing names such as DizzeeRascal and Tinchy Stryder. While their line-up may havechanged, the standard of talenthasn't faltered. To name checka few of the alumni, we haveFlowDan, Brazen, Manga, J2K,Target, Scratchy, Brazen, DJKarnage, as well as singer,Tania Foster who are keepingthe movement alive. With suchbig personalities as these, canyou imagine their studio ses-

sions? Before mymind can take a tripdown imaginationdrive, Manga derailsmy train of thought.

"There is not asmuch havoc as youthink," he tells me.Then he laughs andadds, "Actuallymaybe there is! Noseriously, because Iam in it I can see thatthere is organisationto the chaos.Everyone is just thereworking, we all knowthat we have some-

thing to do, so we get it alldone. "The only thing that doeshappen when we are workingall together is that if someone isrubbish, they just get taken offthe song. There is alwayssomeone to replace you, soyou better come with your bestverse."

This competitive edge seemsto have worked wonders for RollDeep, who have scored twonumber one singles during theirtime. However, with critics con-tinuing to argue that grime isdead, how does a group, bornfrom the genre, survive? "Thereare still new people makinggrime and the people com-

plaining that the ones whostarted the scene aren't makinggrime, are still putting the musicout there." He pauses, thenadds: "There have been nega-tive and positive changes togrime, though. The positivesare it can now be seen more. It’s not just some small under-ground genre that nobodypays attention to. The negativesare people are a bit more cau-tious of it. Emcees are notgoing to say something reck-less because they've realisedthat this game is actually acareer now, rather than some-thing we do for fun." When talkmoves to the controversial topicof, ‘selling out for mainstreamsuccess,’ he argues: "There is adifference between being suc-cessful and selling out. Peoplewill only think you are selling outwhen you have success andyou don't acknowledge whereyou came from."

"We have had good timeswith our single Green Light andour albums, but in the midst ofthat we have made hard grimetunes as well. People recogniseyou as successful when theysee that you keep havinghits. Then they know that it is nota game or that you’re in it to getquick money." With their latest

album aptly titled X (Roman numeral for 10),

weeks away from release, it’sclear that Roll Deep are in it forthe long-haul.

"Our new album X, tells thestory of how we got here. Ourfans can expect good musicand we are still keeping it fresh.I don't want to say that we haveanother 10 years because thatsounds so generic, like 'yeahwe have another ten years'," helaughs, "let's say we haveanother seven instead!"

Before I let Manga go, Iattempt to solve another RollDeep mystery by asking how usmere mortals can join the crew."You have to be patient. Youhave to be talented. And youhave to be able to cuss! If youfall asleep and you are dribblingor something you will be knownas 'dribble mouth' forever!”

Michael Gray feat Roll Deep Can’tWait For The Weekend is out Sept23. X is out on Oct 11 throughCooking Vinyl.
