Dear Kat,
I’ve recently lost a lot of weight by controlling how much I eatand everybody has told me that I look good.
At first I was happy but now I am worried because I can’tseem to stop. I looked up anorexia but I don’t think I have it,because for me, calories are not important, I just like to controlhow much is on my plate.
The reason I’m scared is because even if I look at a big mealI automatically feel intimidated. I don’t want to lose any moreweight but when I look in the mirror I still see fat.
Help!
Persia, 20
Dear Persia,There are many different kinds of eating disorders, not all can
- or should - be categorised as anorexia. I think a good place tostart is for you to talk your concerns through with someone youtrust.
You’ll find that such conditions are a lot more common thanyou think and there is so much help available if you speak up.
You have taken the first step by voicing your concerns to me,but I think the next best step would be a conversation with ahealth professional.
Please know that you are not alone and there are several waysto answer the questions you have about your feelings with peo-ple who love and care for you.
FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 6, 2013 THE VOICE 25
THEY SAY thatthere is an art toeverything we doand 23-year-oldanimator Dum
Doodles has proved that theoryto be true.
After all, it’s not everyday thatUS superstar Chris Brown spotsyour talent and proclaims you tobe one of their artistic inspira-tions. And being able to creditUK rapper Bashy as the manwho gave you your first “bigbreak” is nothing less than aunique and humbling experi-ence. It is also a very rareoccurrence to be asked to ani-mate an entire video for one ofBritain’s most promising girlgroups, StooShe. However, allof these remarkable things, andmore, have happened to the“humbled” Londoner, who
believes that music and art are“a match made in heaven.”
“You’ll find that a lot of musi-cians say things like ‘I wasinspired by this picture’. As anartist, there is no way I can justsit there in silence and drawsomething amazing, I have toplay music. It’s like there is thismutual respect and lovebetween the art forms,” hesays.
While he admits that in theearly stages of his career, hestruggled to find a way to turnhis art into a business, DumDoodles, real name KwamKorsa-Acquah, reveals that hispassion for drawing meant thathe could rarely focus his atten-tion on anything else.
“Art has always been myaddiction, although at one pointI wanted to be a sailor,” helaughs
“I could have gone downeither route, but ever since Iwas at school, art kept creepinginto everything. I used to getcaught drawing on tables andin my textbooks all the tine. When teachers annoyed me, I’dmake a caricature of them andpass it around. That’s how I gotthe nickname Dum Doodles. Itwas then I said to myself, ‘Ihave to turn this into a brand’.”
Back then, of course, he hadno idea then that UK rapperBashy would help him completethis mission.
“I approached Bashy onMySpace and I asked him to letme do some art for him. Iended up making the video forhis remix of Amy Winehouse’sRehab. In five days it had55,000 view on YouTube.”
Following the success of this
project and “word of mouth,”the animator, from Enfield, northLondon, went on to create hisnow infamous caricatures forstars including UK comedian,Gina Yashere. Hype surround-ing Doodles eventually reachedthe ears of US singer (and artenthusiast) Chris Brown whenAmerican socialites and design-ers to the stars, CoCo andBreezy told the singer about theBritish talent.
“I’m not sure if everybodyknows this, but Chris Brown setup an art blog calledMechanical Dummy. The girlstold him about me and I guesshe really liked my stuff. One dayI got an email saying that hewanted to feature me on a proj-ect called Young G’z, which cel-ebrates young talent. It wascrazy to see how somebodyjust looking at your work canget inspired. I was humbled bythe whole experience,” heexplains.
“Interestingly enough, the artChris chose for the website wasa caricature of [his girlfriendand fellow singer] Rihanna,” helaughs.
Purely coincidence? After all,Brown and Rihanna onlyrecently reconciled followingtheir 2009 breakup.
Holding in his laugh, he says:“Probably. I couldn’t say forsure, but each to their own Iguess!”
The diplomatic answers don’tstop there. When I begin toprobe about his work with girl
band StooShe he lets slip a fewsnippets about their futureplans to work together.
“I can’t say too much, butwhat I will say is that we areworking on something so keepyour eyes on their Twitter page.”
Despite remaining tight-lipped about his union with thefemale four-piece, the illustratordoes reveal plans to launch hisown toy range.
“A lot of the toys will be soldin Nigeria and we want to cre-ate a mobile app featuring themas cartoons. We are also work-ing on some children’s books, making modern versions ofAfrican fables.”
He adds: “Growing up thereweren’t many black people inmy school and my family arefrom Ghana so I grew uparound that culture. WheneverI’d draw a character from thebook they’d be black. People
would be like ‘what’s that blackscribble?’ And I’d be like, ‘hey, that’s my aunty!’”
As Doodles continues tomake his mark on the art andanimation world, he joins agroup of modern black Britishartists, who have all shot tofame for their work over the lastyear.
He says: “I have definitelyseen that there has been a lotmore love shown to artists fromthe mainstream recently. Thisyear is definitely the takeover,it’s the new artists renaissance. For an artist to get the samerecognition as a musician is anew development and we areseeing that more and more, sowho knows where we’ll all benext.”
