Dear Kat,

I am into fashion and I hope to enroll at the LondonCollege of Fashion when I finish my A Levels.

My dad thinks it is ‘gay’ and wants me to be a footballer. It has nothing to do with me not liking girls because I do. Iwant to work with clothes and I have always been that way.He thinks that I won’t make money and people will talk.

I promised my mum I will think about doing somethingelse but I doubt that I will.

What should I do?

Nakim, 18

Hi Nakim,

I respect you. A lot of young people your age don’t knowwhat they want to do beyond college; it’s great to hear thatyou have a clear plan. It’s unfortunate that your dad doesn’tshare the same passion that you do.

Your chosen vocation does not determine what your sex-uality is, it’s sad that people often do, though. Your father, like many others out there, wanted you to take up a voca-tion deemed more ‘manly,’ hence the football suggestion. You need to explain to him that football does not make youhappy, fashion does.

Although he probably knows, it might be an idea toexplain that fashion does not mean you have a limited inter-est in girls, but is something you are good at and would liketo take further.

We all want to please our parents, but sometimes we can’tlet that be at the expense of pleasing ourselves.

NOVEMBER 1 - 7, 2012 THE VOICE 25

HE CALLS himself‘Superman’ andit’s not hard tosee why.Jermaine Riley,

the former frontman of UK-based R’n’B trio FDM, is clearlya man of many talents.

Not content with having theability to sing girls into a frenzy, blessed with moves only aselect few can lay claim to, oreven being able to write a

beautiful song and edit theaccompanying video, this southLondon star is also a dab handat graphic design.

With all of these elementscombined into one superhu-man, it seems like a solo careerwould have been a naturalchoice for the Hello Earthsinger.

This is why it comes as ashock when he reveals that

striking out on his own was nota part of his original plan andthe split from FDM was in fact“bitter sweet”.

He explains: “I loved being ina group. I wasn’t doing it tospringboard myself into a solocareer and I never had anyintentions of going solo. Iwanted FDM to be like a Boyz IIMen thing, where the legacy isthe group.”

Quickly addressing the ele-phant in the room he adds:“What led to the break-up wasthe fact that I did not believe inthe team that we were beingguided by anymore. From myend I can say that I would love tohave a [FDM] reunion one day.”

However, even without thehelp of his bandmates, who hestill affectionately calls his‘brothers’, the singer has man-aged to rack up thousands ofmusicdownloads. Hello Earth, probably one of his most suc-cessful mixtapes, is currentlybeing sold in 600 stores acrossJapan.

“I haven’t been to Japanyet,” he confesses with a laugh.

“We are trying to sort some-thing out for me to be overthere soon. So far the feedbackabout Hello Earth has beenreally positive so I am reallygrateful.

“I was sent some pictures ofthe CD on the shelves next to[US singer] Chris Brown. Therewere massive posters of me inthe R’n’B section. That was def-initely one of my highlights forthe summer, I’ll never forgetthat,” he adds.

When I explain that the sub-ject is about to move ontoromance, the heartthrob imme-diately takes on a more comi-cal tone and abruptly denieshaving an official‘Superwoman’.

“No, there is no Mrs Riley.Marriage is not on the cardsright now…I am still Superman! At the moment I am

just focused on my music!”Sad news for any prospec-

tive Lois Lanes. So how does Jermaine deal

with all the female attention andscreaming fans?

“I think the best way to dealwith fans is to hug them. I thinka hug just says a lot. More sothan words and more so than awave. You can always tell howsomeone feels with a hug,” hesays.

I can almost hear the unified‘awww’ as you read this - youbig softies! But fear not, youcan now add a slow jamsoundtrack to those lovingthoughts with the star’s newmixtape, Ten Eleven Twelve.

He says: “The mixtape isanother body of work that dealswith re-fix’s [covers] as well asmy original music. I just wantedto give people an insight intomy ability to write songs and

almost put my own spin onsongs that I like.”

“Actually I am really excitedabout this project because thisis the first time I am not speak-ing about my ‘Superman’ alterego,” he laughs.

“Now I’m just trying to get toJermaine Riley. The next albumwill let fans get a chance toknow the real me. Things likehow I love and how I feel aboutcertain things by giving themmy perspective.”

When I ask him to finish thesentence, “I want the world toknow…,” he pauses and thinksfor a few seconds.

“I want the world to knowthat I will never stop doingmusic, you don’t have to worryabout me going anywhere.”

Ten Eleven Twelve will bereleased on November 10 viawww.jermaineriley.com
