THANK YOU MAMA!

Kalm Paul-Christian is on top of theworld, and rightly so. He, along with 50per cent of the Target Oxbridge partici-pants who applied for places this aca-demic year, has recently received anoffer from St Hugh’s College, Oxford toread History in October 2013.

Fresh from his appearances on fiveBBC local radio stations and on ColourfulRadio, Kalm is now preparing for the“culture shock” that awaits him in thenew chapter of his life.

He says: “I had a culture shock com-ing from my east London state school toa middle class grammar school, but Ithink going to Oxford will be an even big-

ger leap. But at the end of the day we areall people; it’s just about being open-minded.”

He adds: “At secondary school I wasmore of the golden child. I was expectedto do well and all of my teachers sup-ported me and pushed me to be thebest.

“They told me I could do anything. Ibelieved I could do anything.”

Target Oxbridge is a free programmethat encourages and prepares bright, black state school-educated pupils forOxbridge applications.

In honour of Mother’s Day we take a look at some of the influential women behind some of our most-loved stars.

Page 3: Young Voices Rapper PW Edition

Dear Kat,My friend passed away recently and I’m having trouble going on

without him. We were inseparable and his death came as such ashock to all who knew him, but I’ve taken it particularly hard.

I haven’t gone to college in weeks or spoken to friends in ages. Iknow my family are worried about me, but there is little they can do tomake me feel better right now.

I do want to feel better, but I just don’t know what to do. My everythought is consumed by thoughts of him and I cry every time I remem-ber he’s no longer around and will never come back.

Help!

Anon, 18

Dear Anon,Thank you for your message. My thoughts are with you at this sad

time.Death is one of the only certainties in life, but it doesn’t make it any

easier to deal with. Right now you’re grieving and this process is dif-ferent for every individual so don’t beat yourself up by thinking thatyou should “feel better” by now. I guarantee you that your familyunderstand how you are feeling and wouldn’t want you to feel guiltyabout how your grief is affecting them.

You’ll need to speak with someone at your college and explain yoursituation to them. It’s important that they be made aware. Maybe theycan provide you with some work that you can complete at home?

I will say that sometimes going out with friends and loved ones canhelp the grieving process, even if it’s only momentarily.

Draw comfort in knowing that this feeling will get easier. You willnever forget your friend, but you will learn to smile again.

HE’S TOUREDwith N-Dubzstar Dappy andUK singerC o n o r

Maynard, sold-out his first one-man show in north London’sThe Garage, but the mother ofUK rapper PW wants nothingmore than her son to go back toeducation.

“I heard that she was tellingeveryone at The Garage thatshe wants me to go back touniversity,” the 20-year-oldlaughs coyly.

“She hasn’t said anything tome yet though,” he adds.

But despite longing for herson to return to the books, PWadmits that she has been noth-ing more that “supportive,” fol-lowing his decision to put hisstudies (a degree in criminol-ogy) aside to pursue music.

“When I asked my mum whatshe thought about me taking a

gap year and potentially doingmusic for a year she said, ‘I willsupport you in any decision’and in that gap year, I got awhole lot done.”

From Paris to New York, theyoung rapper’s music has takenhim all over the world and seenhis breakout single Not ThinkingAbout You and follow-up tracksSingle and On My Wayplaylisted on popular TV musicoutlet, Channel AKA and notch-ing up plays on BBC 1xtra andChoice FM, firmly cementing hisplace on the UK music scene.

“The last 12 months havebeen very, very good,” he says.“We’ve had tours with Dappy,Conor Maynard and [US boy-band] Mindless Behaviour andwe’ve had releases. I’ve beentravelling a lot. I went to NewYork, Copenhagen and done alot of soul searching. I thinktravelling helps with my writingand with my music. Going out

there and seeing what otherpeople listen to, seeing othercultures, architecture and fash-ion, really enhances my knowl-edge.”

Despite the roar of thousandsof fans at the aforementionedarena concerts, PW, real nameAkheim Allen, says his highlight, despite a smaller number offans “has got to be my firstheadline show.”

“That has beaten all thetours,” he says.

“Nothing was bigger thanthat for me. It wasn’t the biggestvenue, but people came to seeme. All these people came outto see me and they weresinging my songs. I still can’tget over that right now. I’mready to get back on thestage.”

PW, who hails fromEdmonton, north London, started emceeing at 14 in a bikeshed with friends and would

often record his music at a fam-ily friend’s studio after school orat the weekends.

“It was good because I was-n’t on the streets, I wasn’t doinganything bad. [Our familyfriend] would say, ‘I’d rather yoube here and around me, thanon the streets getting involvedin foolishness.’ From there Istarted taking music seriously.”

His first track, W.I.N.N.E.R,earned the rapper 100 views onYouTube in the days following itsposting, but this sobering num-ber didn’t deter the young musi-cian.

“I was like ‘Yay!’” He lets outa celebratory laugh. “It eventu-ally got more hits, but it was astart. I then met up with Garbz, who is my label manager [andUK producer] right now and Iplayed another one of mytracks called Sensible. It was atrack that I had done with threeof my friends, and he wasblown away.”

He released debut mixtapeNKOTB to rave reviews and crit-ical acclaim. Later this year PWwill release his pre-album, FromLondon With Love, which hehopes will inspire and mobilisea generation of young musicfans.

“[Over the years] my soundhas matured. I always try andput positive messages in mymusic. If you listen to recordslike On My Way, I’m always say-ing something that is inspiringor motivating. The tongue isstrong, so I have to think aboutwhat I’m saying. I have a little

brother and cousins – I have allthese kids listening to mymusic. What are they gettingfrom it?”

And that, he says, is whatmakes him different from otherrappers out there.

“I’m trying to bring emotionback to music, back to theurban scene.”

Cue his latest release, thelove-themed EP, From P WithLove.

The “single” lothario said: “Itwas Valentine’s Day and I didn’thave a Valentine so I came upwith this concept. It’s a cohe-sive body of work that goesfrom when you meet a girl, tobeing a relationship, to ulti-mately breaking up. I’m oldernow, I’ve gone through a lot ofthings. Right now I’m just con-structing my sound.”

And if we talk in five years, would he have accomplished all

he set out to do?“Of course,” he laughs.“I would have just sold out

my first arena tour, my albumwould’ve gone platinum, I’dhave a few awards, including aBRIT. That’s what I’m striving for.I will get it, I’m not going to sayhopefully, hopefully means Ihave doubts, but I will becauseI believe in myself and I know Ican do it.”

And how about revisitingeducation, once his musicalambitions are fulfilled, of course– for mum? He laughs.

“I talk about it everyday withmy friends. A lot of my friends aregraduating and I feel kind of leftout, but everyone has got theirdifferent paths and I’m happy inthe direction I’m going in”
