Dear Kat,My ex-boyfriend and I have been friends for years, but he recently

got a new girlfriend and all of a sudden things have changed. We continued a physical relationship when we broke up. I still had

feelings for him, but his were stronger and everyone knew it. He neverwanted to break up and always wanted us to get back together, but Ijust wasn't ready to settle down and didn't want to hurt him. I thoughthe'd always be there, but it looks like he's giving this new relationshipa go.

He says he wants to remain friends, but won’t talk to me and refusesto meet to discuss things. If he is truly over me, why can’t he talk? I'mhurt and angry because we've always been able to talk about every-thing.

What can I do?Anon

Hi Anon,To be honest, you can't do a thing right now. You already called

time on the relationship when you broke up with him. You were both filling a void by continuing a physical relationship

and now he has filled that void elsewhere. He has decided to invest his heart and his body somewhere else

and you must do the same. Your physical relationship was preventing you both from moving

forward. Someone needed to break the ties, they were counter-pro-ductive to your growth.

By texting you’re just going to make him and his new girlfriend’srelationship stronger and he will eventually start to resent you. Youdidn’t want him when he was available, I’m going to take a wildguess and say you only want him now because he has moved onand that’s not fair.

If he is truly yours he will come back to you, but DON’T wait!

“IFELT like it wascool to be called a‘yardie’ so I took it

upon myself to turn the wordinto a positive with a song,”says UK (via Jamaica) dance-hall star, Stylo G whose hit CallMe a Yardie celebrates the termconsidered derogatory bysome.

“Back in the 1980s they usedto say ‘yardies’ [were just into]drugs and guns, but from myperspective there was room tochange this powerful word intosomething that people would beproud to call themselves.”

Stylo G, real name JasonMcDermot, moved to Englandfrom Spanish Town, Jamaica, shortly after his father, legendarydancehall star Poison Chang, passed away.

As a 15-year-old he recalls

that his British classmatesweren’t as accepting of his her-itage as he might have been.

“When I first came to Englandand I was going to school, theyused to call me ‘yardie boy’.Some of my friends took offenceto it, but every time I heard oneof them say ‘Don’t call him ayardie,’ I was like, ‘Why? It’s justa word. They don’t know whatthe real meaning of a ‘yardie’ is’

In his 2012 undergroundsmash, he raps: “Call me ayardie, call me a yardie, we love[Mercedes] Benz and Beamers[BMWs] and Audis. No girlsinna the club, we nah party. Givewe Hennessy, we nah drinkBarcardi”

So that’s his definition of thewidely used term, then? Helaughs.

“The song is just saying,

‘Jamaicans, stand up and beproud of who you are and whatyou are.’ That’s me. Music isfreedom of speech.”

Call Me a Yardie crossed con-tinents and received kudos andradio play as far afield as Japanand the USA, which has subse-quently sparked a number ofinternational visits for the starthis year.

“I’m planning to travel theworld this year and take mymusic with me. I want to wavethe flag for dancehall music,” hesays.

Listing fellow dancehall actssuch as Shabba Ranks,Capleton, Bounty Killer andVybz Kartel as musical inspira-tions, talk soon moves onto howthe incarceration of many of thegenres most-loved stars hasaffected the scene.

“It has definitely affected thescene,” he says matter-of-factly.

“Even with me being a signedartist in the UK right now, dance-hall is still seen as a risk. Weneed to tighten up a few thingsas far as dancehall is con-cerned. People think that artistsgoing to jail is cool, it’s not. Weare role models that people arelooking up to. We don’t want tohave that jail thing hanging overour names.”

He adds: “Dancehall is notaggressive, I’m showing themthat. The fact that it is viewed insome cultures as aggressive iswhat’s holding the genre back.I’ve got my foot in the door nowand I’m showing them that itdoesn’t have to be viewed thatway.” He attributes this mindsetto his late father.

“RIP to my dad Poison Changwho passed away in 2000. I wasonly 13 at the time. He wouldalways push school and educa-tion on me. I passed all of myexaminations and he wasproud. He never told me to pickup a microphone, he wasalways pressuring me about myschoolwork. He would often saythat the music industry wasn’teasy, but I said, ‘Dad, I like whatyou’re doing and I want to getinvolved.’”

Asked what he thought hisdad would make of where he isnow and what advice he mightbestow, Stylo replied: “He wouldtell me to make sure that I’minvesting my money into the rightthings and make sure I have myhead screwed on. Just makes u r e

I’m doing something positive.”His acceptance in the UK

music scene would suggest hehas done so, something hebelieves will be replicated in hisCaribbean hometown despitethe blatant “cultural differ-ences”.

“My music in Jamaica isaccepted. Call Me a Yardie playsdown there, most of my tracksplay down there. I’ve got fans, girls and the man dem saying,‘Yo Stylo, we want to see youcome down,’ but it’s not at aplace where I can say that I’mhappy. Jamaica is the heart ofdancehall music. I have to goand make sure that I pleasethem first.”

His new track Soundbwoy is afar cry from the ode to dancehallthat Call Me a Yardie was. It’sstyle rather a melting pot of thefamed Jamaican genre and amore “European sound”. Does

he think this will resonate withhis Jamaican fanbase the wayits predecessor did?

“The Jamaican and Britishcultures are very different. I’vebeen in England for some timenow so I have to adapt to thisenvironment and make musicthat the UK can relate to. I’veseen Jamaican stars come overhere and they’ve been so good, but the music is not connectingwith the people.

“With my new trackSoundbwoy, it’s still got the reg-gae feel to it, but it’s reggaemixed with a more Englishsound – a crossover. Music isabout the beat and the groove. Ihave Radio 1 DJs supportingme now, Kiss FM DJs playing itand Choice FM. I’m very happywith the feedback.”

Sounbwoy is out on April 14 through 3Beat Records. For more informationfollow @StyloGee on Twitter
