FEMI CO-FOUNDED The FearlessDiaspora after recognising that a lot ofyoung people of African origin, studyingoutside Africa, still maintained a passionfor the continent and felt a responsibilityto give back to it in some capacity.

The site serves as a platform for dis-cussion of ideas and exploration ofissues affecting Africa and its people. Itcontains articles on current Africanaffairs and topical discussions. Femidescribes it as “an awesome platform forthe African voice to be heard”.

Whilst he is driven by a strong socialresponsibility, Femi has always made hisacademics a priority, and performedspectacularly as a result. He achieved a

First Class degree in his Finals at Oxfordand was recently presented with theprestigious Thouron Award, an IvyLeague scholarship worth $80,000. Thescholarship will fund his two-yearMasters course at the University ofPennsylvania.

Femi has also found time to completefour internships while studying, includingone with an engineering company andanother with Magic Circle law firmSlaughter and May. His most memorablework experience, however, was a stint atthe UN International Criminal Tribunal forRwanda. He says it was “intensely, pro-foundly life changing.”

Dear Kat,

All of my friends are boasting that they are having sex withtheir boyfriends, but although I have a boyfriend, I haven’t beenintimate with him.

There’s a part of me that feels I should lie or just do it to getthem off of my back, but the truth is, I wouldn’t know where tostart and I don’t think I’m ready.

They have started playfully teasing me, but there’s a part ofme that thinks they feel I’m a loser. Do I lie to get them off myback?

Steph, London

Dear Steph,You should never give away something so precious because

of peer pressure. Being intimate is a big decision and is not onethat should be made merely to get people “off your back.”

It is a decision that requires a lot of thought and is one thatyou should make only when you feel ready. I’d like to mentionhere that it is illegal to be intimate with anyone if you are underthe age of 16, so if this is the category that you fit into, you mustbe aware of legal ramifications.

Just because your friends say they have had sex, it doesn’tmean they have. A lot can be learned on the internet, in booksand on TV, so don’t be surprised if that is where they’re gettingall of their “experience” from.

Don’t rush into anything, Steph. Enjoy being young and care-free. Being intimate with someone opens you up to a lot of adultproblems.

FEBRUARY 7 - 13, 2013 THE VOICE 25

HE HAS ‘dis-turbed’ nearlyevery countryacross theglobe, toured

with US superstars, Rihannaand Usher, and performed forthe royals, but UK rapper TinieTempah is still hungry for more.Even with a collection of No.1singles (and an album), thelaunch of his DisturbingLondon fashion line and a slewof awards to match, the star, real name PatrickChukwuemeka Okogwu, vowsto “keep working until I reachall of my goals.”

He says: “Success is a verysubjective thing. Success forme is getting to a place andposition where you are com-fortable and you have createda comfortable environment foryourself. It’s also about fulfillingyour maximum potential inwhatever field you decide to

follow. As far as I am con-cerned, I am going to carry ongoing until I feel that I havecreated a legacy for myself!”

The 24-year-old, who wasborn and raised in southLondon’s Aylesbury Estate, hasbeen famously quoted saying,“London is one of the onlyplaces in the world where youcan live in a council block andsee a beautiful semi-detachedhouse across the street.“Growing up around that wasinspirational; it kept me moti-vated.” And no one can denyhis motivation.

In 2007, he released mix-tape, Hood Economics – Room147: The 80 Minute Course, which spurned undergroundhits Tears and ladies’ favourite,Wifey, firmly positioning Tinieon the road to stardom.

A 2009 performance at theannual Wireless Festival inLondon’s Hyde Park caught

the attention of a ParlophoneRecords scout, who noticedthe Londoner’s skills and grow-ing fan base.

The label set up a meetingwith Tinie’s manager andcousin, Dumi Oburota, withwhom he had previously set upindependent label, DisturbingLondon. He signed toParlophone in the same year.

Despite his impressiveunderground success, it wasTinie’s 2011’s mainstream hitsingle, Pass Out from debutalbum,Disc-O-very, thatbrought him to the attention ofmasses. It entered the UKchart at No.1 and stayed therefor two weeks.

His follow-up single, Frisky, produced by friend and fellowmusician, Labrinth, reached animpressive No.2 and causedwaves across the pond, withR&B star Usher claiming it asone of his “favourite” tracks.

But is was the rapper’s thirdsingle, Written In The Stars, thatwent on to become his biggestsingle to date, selling over115,000 copies in its first week.

“It’s not been easy to getwhere I am. If it was, then every-one would be doing it, so Icount my blessings daily. I’vehad so many spectacularmoments from No.1 singlesand albums, awards, interna-tional trips, which include thoseto my homeland Lagos and toNew Zealand. It’s been every-thing that I could’ve asked forand I am constantly learningand being inspired.”

Although he cites USPresident, Barack Obama andformer South African leader,Nelson Mandela, as his life andcareer inspirations, it is hismanager Dumi who he creditsfor his winning fashion sense, which saw him crowned theBest Dressed man of 2012 inmen’s magazine GQ.

“I have always liked fashion, but I have to give my props tomy manager and a whole loadof other influential peoplearound me,” he says.

“I’m like a sponge who soaksup fashion ideas and I developmy own style from there. Istarted performing at 16 and Ithought if I’m going to stand infront of all these people who arethe same age as me, I need tohave an extra edge. I just can’tlook like everyone else, hencethe [signature black-rimmedRay-Ban] glasses.”

And on the Best Dressednod, he says: “It’s

amazing and flattering. Peoplewho are usually awarded thingslike that are, in my opinion, usu-ally older, so it feels good torepresent Britain and fashion ina different light.”

His love for fashion spurnedclothing line, DisturbingLondon, which he says is for“guys like me who are notfrightened to wear somethingdifferent.”

He says: “It was the nextobvious step as there is somuch more to me than justmusic. My manager Dumi and Ithought that it was the perfectaddition to our DisturbingLondon brand. Our aim is tobuild a lifestyle company.”

It’s apt to slot in here, that ourTinie’s love for fashion onceburned a $37,000 hole in hispocket – for just one pair oftrainers. He laughs when I men-tion his lavish purchase.

“I brought them to supportthe Michael J Fox Parkinson’s

Trust,” he says sheepishly. Thankfully, his choice of

clothing for his perfect ladydoesn’t come with such a highprice tag.“If it’s a summer date,I’m a sucker for a lovely maxidress. I’m really big on acces-sories for girls. Whenever I seea girl in a nice watch, I alwaysappreciate that.”

He adds: “I also love a girlwearing a pair of Jordan’s[trainers] or nice flat shoes.Heels are cool for when you’regoing somewhere swanky, but ifI’m wearing a tracksuit, I like tosee my girl wearing pumps orsomething relaxed.”

Does he have a special ladyin his life? “To be honest, I justwant to concentrate on themusic. That’s what got me hereand that’s what makes mehappy. Music is still my firstlove!”

Tinie Tempah’s new album,Demonstration, is set for release laterthis year www.disturbinglondon.com

Rapper 50 Cent accused fellow hip-hopstar, Rick Ross, of staging the near-

death shooting incident in Miami

"Haha fat boy hit thebuilding? lol. It looks stagedto me. No holes in the car.”

RICK ROSS: The US rapper was the

target of a drive-byshooting in Miami. He

escaped unhurt.

JOE JACKSON: Michael Jackson’s father

said he doesn’t regret“being tough” with his

famous children despiteclaims he was too strict

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: His No.1 single, Suit &

Tie, moved 310,087digital copies in just one

week. The 2006 hit,SexyBack, moved

250,000 in comparison

RIHANNA: The singer confirmed

that she and ChrisBrown have rekindled

their controversialromance. It’s "different

now" she said.

No words!
