SONG TEACHING STEPS
“Don’t Be Afraid”
“Don’t Be Afraid” Song Teaching Steps, page 1 Be Strong in the Lord Fall—Younger © 2016 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.
1. Move to the song.• Distribute ribbon sticks.
• Play Demo 2, and lead children to perform the following movement patternsin random order with ribbon sticks, changing patterns every four measures(or three measures for interludes), to reinforce the dotted-quarter-note beat.Begin movements at measure 7 at the piano entrance.(Go to www.celebrating-grace.com/Don’tBeAfraidRibbonMovementsVideoto view movements.)
° X—Move the ribbon down and across the body, forming an X (or infinitysymbol).
° Down/Up—Move the ribbon down and up in front of the body.
° Circle Right—Move the ribbon clockwise in front of the body, making one revolution per one big beat.
° Circle Left—Move the ribbon counterclockwise in front of the body, making one revolution per one big beat.
° Overhead—Move the ribbon left/right overhead.
° Down Low—Move the ribbon left/right with ribbon sticks pointed toward the floor.
° Left/Right—Move the ribbon left/right across the body in a straight line.
• Direct children to listen for the change from § to 4 at measure 24. Lead them to tap the air in front of them as if striking a drum (Tap) to a quarter-note beat through the 4 section until the music changes back to § at measure 32.
Teaching TipDoing the ribbon movements will help children feel the two big beats in §sections and the four beats in the 4 sections.
• Repeat, allowing volunteers to select and lead the movements.
• Ask a volunteer to read Joshua 1:9 from the “Don’t Be Afraid” AccompanimentVisuals. Pray, thanking God for the strength and courage He promises us.
2. Teach Section B (meas. 24-31).• Distribute Student Pages and ribbon sticks.
Teaching TipChildren can hold page 1 of their Student Pages in their left hand and the ribbon stick in their right hand. Or have children place Student Pages on the floor in front of them.

• Have the pianist play the melody as you sing Section B for the children. Follow dynamics markings in the music, starting quietly (P) and gradually increasing to loud (f). Perform the Tap movement in small strokes with ribbon sticks when the music is soft and in larger strokes as the music gets louder.
• Point to the Dynamics Visual, and explain that you are singing a crescendo, gradually getting louder.
• Have children sing measure 24-31 as they perform the small and large movements to remind them to sing soft and loud.
• Play Demo 2. Lead children to follow your ribbon movements in each Section A, changing movements in random order as before. Have everyone sing and do the Tap Movement during Section B.
3. Teach Section A.• Distribute Student Pages and ribbon sticks.
• Echo sing Section A in two-measure phrases on the syllable bah.
• Assign a ribbon movement pattern.
• Lead children to sing and move to the phrase with ribbon sticks. Have them do the movement one direction for each two-measure phrase.
• Assign a different movement for Stanza 2 then sing and move to Stanza 2.
• Explain that they will sing Stanza 1 again after Section B.
• Play Demo 2. Lead children to sing through measure 43, doing one ribbon movement for Stanza 1, another for Stanza 2, and the Tap Movement for Section B. Have them stand still and listen to the Ending.
• Repeat with different ribbon movements.
4. Teach the Ending (meas. 44-47). • Sing together measures 36-43, performing the X movements in measures 36-
39 and the Down/Up movements in measures 40-43.
• Have children watch and listen as you sing the melody of the Ending. Move your ribbon stick in the X movement until you sing you go. Point the ribbon stick upward twice on you and go.
• Lead them to do the movements with you as you sing the Ending again.
• Have children sing the Ending and do the movements with you.
• Direct children to sing the melody again as the pianist plays the optional higher harmony notes (cue-sized notes).
• Echo sing the optional harmony notes in measures 44-47.
• Select a few strong singers to sing the harmony part with you.
• Direct everyone to sing the Ending in two parts as the pianist plays both parts.
5. Sing the song with ribbon stick movements.
Teaching TipWrite key words from both sections on a white board. Erase a few on each repetition of the song throughout this step.
Dynamics Visual
www.growing-in-grace.com
“Don’t Be Afraid” Song Teaching Steps, page 3 Be Strong in the Lord Spring—Younger © 2016 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.
• Play Demo 2, and lead children to sing the entire song with random ribbon stick movements, making one large sweeping motion on each phrase.
• Refer to the Dynamics Visual as needed to remind children to observe dynamic changes as rehearsed.
• Encourage children to sing vowels with tall mouths and to pronounce consonants crisply.
• Sing the song, and do ribbon movements with Track 20 or piano accompaniment.
Performance OptionHave the children practice “moving in their heads” (standing still as they sing but feeling the §movement in their minds) instead of moving with the ribbons as they sing. If you choose to perform ribbon movements when singing the song for a worship service, assign certain movements to certain phrases.
6. Sing with instrumental accompaniment. • Display the three Instrumental Accompaniment Visuals, and echo pat each of
the rhythms.
° Glockenspiel—Have children pat both legs to the rhythm holding palms up for rests.
° Alto Xylophone—Have children pat the table or floor, starting hands at shoulder-width apart and moving them closer together for four beats then patting shoulder-width apart again on the last notes.
° Bass Xylophone—Have children pat left, right, left, right, together.
• Let them hold imaginary mallets and practice playing the instruments.
• Assign each instrument to a child.
• Allow time for players to rehearse their assigned parts.
• Play the accompaniment together, adding the instruments one at time as indicated in measures 1-5 in the Score.
• Rehearse as needed until children are confidently playing their parts.
• Lead everyone to sing the song with piano accompaniment as the instrumentalists play their assigned parts.
° Cue them to stop when children begin singing in measure 11.
° Cue them all to play again at measure 32 through the end. Explain that they will play the final two measures of their parts at the end of the song
Teaching TipTeach the instrumental parts during early-arriver or small-group activity time.
