SUPPORT NORTH AMERICAN MISSIONARIES BY GIVING THIS EASTER TO THE ANNIE ARMSTRONG EASTER OFFERING!

Each year, we honor the life and work of Annie Walker Armstrong of Baltimore, MD (1850-1938) when we give to the offering for North American missions named after her. As a tireless servant of God, and a contagious advocate and supporter of mission efforts throughout the world, Annie Armstrong led women to unite in mission endeavors that ultimately led to the formation of Woman's Missionary Union, for which she served as the first corresponding secretary.

Annie believed in Christ with all her heart, but it was her hands that expressed that belief in tangible ways. She spent a great amount of time writing letters in support of missions. Many of these letters were lengthy, and were filled with the conviction that more should be done in our mission efforts. In 1893 alone, she wrote 18,000 letters! Annie never hesitated to use her hands to hug a child or distribute food and clothing, and the Word of God to those in need.

The field is white unto harvest...

GREAT COMMISSION RESURGENCE, & THE LOCAL CHURCH

FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF MISSIONS - BRUCE CONLEY

The last week of February, I attended an assembly of DOM's from "Pioneer areas" of the U.S. in Atlanta, GA.  NAMB was the host of this conference, and the purpose was to try to connect with Associational missionaries and begin the transitional process for GCR, a new strategy that was voted into place in 2010 by the Southern Baptist Convention. Simply put - Great Commission Resurgence is a plan that will focus more money, resources, highly focused training, and strategic planning to plant new churches - primarily in and around major cities where the largest pockets of lost people are in our society today.  A search is currently underway to find regional Vice-Presidents for NAMB who will serve as the directors of this new strategy as it is carried out in each section of the country.  Our region (the Northeast) is still not staffed with a V.P., but the new President of NAMB, Dr. Kevin Ezell is acting as our regional contact until one can be found. Let me say that I have heard Dr. Ezell speak, and have read some of the information he has released since his recent appointment as President of the North American Mission Board, and I am impressed with his leadership, his passion, and the accountability that he desires to bring to church planting.  He is a man of impeccable integrity, who wants to see us as Baptists exercise good stewardship with our mission monies, and he desires to see a maximum return for the donations that are given to North American missions.     NAMB still has a commitment to assist smaller churches, but with the advent of GCR, they hope to put a more intense missional focus on church planting.  DOM's will be given an opportunity to receive training in order to maximize their strengths, and equip them to adjust local efforts to this new strategy.  The term "Director of Missions" will be changed to match the new focus, and jointly funded NAMB missionaries who serve local Associations will now be called "Church Planting Catalysts".  Personally, I prefer the term

"Associational Missionary", but when you get down to it, titles are of little consequence. Many of the details of this transition are still to be decided on, but here's what we do know to date:  Primary Goals: • to mobilize existing churches to engage in

evangelistic church planting• to encourage churches to engage in ongoing and

effective evangelistic activity• to encourage and cultivate pastor/leader skills

among pastors and lay leaders in each association• each DOM will be encouraged to be personally

involved in planting a church or being a member of a church plant in their area

Change is always hard, (especially in churches and church organizations), but the originators of this Great Commission Resurgence firmly believe that God is leading our denomination to make adjustments so that we can better reach out to a lost, and dying world.   Within the Baptist Convention of MD/DE, we are blessed to have a group of 11 DOM's and a State staff who love, support, and respect each other.  We network together multiple times each month, and cooperate together within our giftedness to accomplish the Great Commission and the Great Commandment to the best of our abilities.  In our discussions on these matters, there have been some concerns - especially regarding how more rural areas might be affected in this transition.  As a group, however - we are committed to connecting with NAMB in this season of change, because we firmly believe that our cooperation is important to the future of evangelism in North America.       How much do you know about GCR?  There are many Baptist press articles on the subject, internet blogs, and other sources of information on the matter.  Do you have an opinion on it?  A concern?  I would like to hear from you if you have comments, concerns, or questions as our Association looks to the future of missions and ministry in the area God has called us to serve and minister in. Feel free to call me at (301) 821-0370, or drop an e-mail to [email protected]... I would like to hear your comments and views. In His continued service,

TOM ELLIFF ELECTED IMB PRESIDENTBy a unanimous vote, Thomas (Tom) D. Elliff was elected International Mission Board president March 16 by IMB trustees meeting in Dallas.

Elliff, 67, a longtime pastor, Southern Baptist Convention leader and former missionary, will lead one of the largest evangelical missions agencies in an era of rapid change at home and around the globe.

The greatest mission challenges, he said, are the world’s overwhelming spiritual lostness and the urgency of mobilizing churches to take the Gospel of Christ to all peoples.

“We must realize that we’re in a world that is hostile to the message of the Gospel, yet there are so many people who are longing to hear,” Elliff said. “That’s why we must go to the

uttermost now. Frankly, I think we live in a generation of students who are asking, ‘Why do we keep hearing about these unreached people groups? Why don’t we just go reach them?’ I believe we are seeing, even in our own

convention, a groundswell of men and women of all ages who have the heart and are willing to go to the unreached now.”

Addressing questions about his own age, Elliff added: “I’m not coming as an ‘interim.’ I’m coming with a vision — and I will serve as long as God gives me grace and energy.”

Elliff succeeds Jerry Rankin as president of the mission board, which

serves Southern Baptists and the 5,000 missionaries they send worldwide. Rankin retired July 31, 2010, after 17 years as IMB president. Executive Vice President Clyde Meador has served as interim president during the search for a new leader.

Blue Ridge Baptist Association is pleased to announce that Christie Clark will return, and once again serve as our summer missionary. Christie had an long and successful summer in 2010 helping our churches and is looking forward to working with us again this year. She is a student at Oklahoma Baptist University and a member of South End Baptist Church in Frederick, MD. Her long term goal is to become an SBC missionary after graduation from college.

She is available to assist ALL BRBA churches with Vacation Bible School, children and youth events, back yard Bible clubs, community canvassing, and outreach projects. Please note that her time is offered on a first come - first served basis.

Office administrator, Mae Argilan, is standing by to schedule Christie’s time for the period of June 19, 2011 - August 6, 2011. Contact Mae at [email protected] to reserve Christie's services for the block of time you need her this summer ASAP!

Pastor George Snyder was installed as the new pastor at Greenbrier Baptist Church at the end of 2010. In 1989 his family moved from Cumberland to Hagerstown because of a job promotion with Ponderosa Steak House. Greenbrier was just a little brown church he passed on trips to Skycroft for conferences. Out of curiosity, they visited one Sunday to find the congregation was praying for Sunday school teachers to work with small children, and for deacons. They joined the next week. Since then, his wife Rebecca became preschool ASSIST director and George was ordained as a deacon.

They served for seven years and were active at Greenbrier until George felt called into the ministry. He was ordained on October 12, 1997 by Greenbrier, and received his first church at Bible Church in Knoxville Maryland. Then in 2002 he started New Beginnings Christian Fellowship Church at Potomac Heights Elementary School in Hagerstown. For two years he shepherded both churches at the same time.

From 2004 until 2009 Pastor “G” led the First Baptist of Sharpsburg (an ABA church), which merged with First Sharpsburg and formed United Christian Fellowship Church. In 2010, upon Pastor David's retirement, he accepted the call

to Greenbrier and turned over U.C.F to an Associate Pastor whom was ordained the prior year. Now George says that it feels like he’s home.

With an ideal location (Rts. 40 & 66) his vision for the Lord’s work has not changed, but has been enlarged. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit Greenbrier plans to reach as many unsaved

people as possible before the Lord returns, which may be any day now.

The first priority is letting people know they are here and that they care. A new sign has been ordered that has back-to-back

LED message boards. Also, there are now Sunday school classes for all ages that are already staffed. Friday Night Date Night is an outreach to young couples and single parents, which is very successful so far, and they are in the process of setting up a Saturday night or Sunday early morning blended worship service to compliment the 11:00 AM traditional service. The Lord is truly blessing!

ASSOCIATIONAL MISSIONS WEEK Set for May 15 to 22, 2011Associational Missions Week is coming to churches all across America.  It is a time where churches can highlight and reflect on the value of being involved in mission work in a enlarged area across the cities and counties around them.  It's also a time to PRAY for your local Association staff, and all of the volunteers that devote many hours and resources to the work of the Blue Ridge Baptist Association. As you pray during this emphasis on local missions, pray for:

Rev. Bruce M. Conley, Director of Missions Bruce is now full time in his position as DOM, and moved his family to the area 8 months ago. Pray specifically for his leadership, for church plants that he is working with and strategizing for, and pray for the existing churches that he ministers to on a ongoing basis.  Also pray for his family as they adjust to life in a new area.

Mae Argilan, Administrative Assistant / Clerk / TreasurerMae has worked for BRBA for almost 10 years now, and is the "glue" that holds everything together.  Her position is part-time in hours, but carries a great responsibility with it - so pray for wisdom, guidance, and a special blessing from God as she serves all of the churches in our Association.

Phil Graves, Multi-Media & Computer/Web SpecialistPhil has been with BRBA for almost 9 years, and has been a extraordinary help to churches with all kinds of technical issues.  Blue Ridge churches have a higher percentage of professional and user-friendly web sites than most Associations in BCM/D thanks to Phil's expertise.  He has also saved our churches thousands of dollars in technical support fees, that can then be used to support other areas of

ministry in your local church setting.  Pray for Phil (who is now part-time), for God to help him find balance between

his secular job, raising his 3 children, and his ministry work in BRBA.          The Blue Ridge Baptist Association is ready to help YOUR church with facing the challenges that every

church faces in our communities.  Effective churches are passionately seeking ways to develop innovative

strategies to reach out to lost people, even in the face of rapid cultural change, issues of diversity, and various transitions within each community.  BRBA spans a vast region, from Thurmont to Front Royal - from Hancock to Urbana.  We have churches that were established over 100 years ago, and others that began just 6 months ago.  Each congregation is unique, but together we share a common goal and purpose - to reach out to others with the love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Your church's ongoing support to the Blue Ridge Baptist Association is both needed, and appreciated, and many have been blessed and encouraged by it.  THANK YOU for your support of BRBA.

TRADE SKILLS An electrician is needed now to re-work a illuminated church sign in need of repair.  The association is compiling a list of volunteers with trade skills, who can assist individuals, churches, or mission causes as needs arise.  If you can do electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or other work - please call Mae at the BRBA office at (240) 818-8760, and let us know how we can reach you.

DISASTER RELIEF  Volunteers are needed for the various tasks that must be covered in the event of a Disaster Relief deployment.  The Blue Ridge Association has a "Mud-Out" unit that specializes in helping in flood situations, but it has equipment on board to clear downed trees, and other vital services for any disaster stricken area.  We also have the convention's premiere Communications unit that will be dedicated later this year, and we need Ham Radio operators, and those willing to train to get a amateur radio license - to man this unit.  Interested volunteers can contact Alan R. Caho, Disaster Relief Coordinator at (301) 788-3530.

SERVICE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

[8]

REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS / ATTORNEYS We are looking for a small group of professionals to meet with the DOM 2 times a year to use their skills and abilities to look for opportunities to secure tax sale or foreclosure land and/or buildings in strategic locations that can be secured for church plants in our region.  Contact DOM Bruce Conley at (301) 821-0370 if you can serve in this capacity.

LOCAL MISSIONS SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS BRBA is looking for volunteers who have a heart for mission church planting, and have used their skills and abilities to serve in and bless their home church - who would be willing to help a brand new mission church plant with those skills for a 6 month - 2 year term.  There is a wide variety of needed leadership that every new church plant does not have in it's beginning days.  Areas needed span from church treasurer/bookkeeper, to musicians, to children's ministry workers, and MANY other areas.  The expectation is that you would provide the service for the mission church in it's initial stages, but that as the church grows, you would train a new member of that mission church to take the job that you are doing. If you are willing to help a mission church with your talents, call the Association office at (240) 818-8760 and let us know how you want to be available to bless a new church start.

PRISON OUTREACH BRBA is seeking church members in our Association, and other Christians who would work closely with the Chaplains that serve inmates (male and female) at the various correctional institutions in the Hagerstown area.  You would be providing an outreach to, spiritual care and support for incarcerated inmates. If you would be interested in serving on this team of servants, call the BRBA office at (240) 818-8760

Ruby Zecher is recovering from rotator cuff surgery. It is slow and painful, and she needs our prayers.

Two of our churches (Pleasant Valley and Crossroads) are actively seeking Pastors, and another church may also be soon. Please pray for those search committees that they may receive wisdom and guidance from God's Holy Spirit regarding their searches. Pray for Baptist Global Response as teams of people minister to disaster stricken people in Japan. Pray for the IMB missionaries and the local Baptist churches in Japan. Some pastors are still unaccounted for. Please also pray for the Holy Spirit to open the hearts of the Japanese people to the gospel and that many would receive Christ.

CrossTrek Church, and Pastor Earl Wentzel are preparing for an official start of services for the new mission church plant in Urbana later this year. Pray for the core group now forming, and that God would bring all the people and resources needed to reach out to the lost in that area of Frederick County.

Pray for Pastor Alan Myers Sr., as he holds Bible studies 3 times each week at the truck stop in Hancock, MD. If these prayer times reveal sufficient interest, it could mean a resurgence of the BRBA's truckers’ ministry, or possibly result in a church plant in Hancock. Pray also for Alan's outreach to fellow prison guards at the correctional facilities in Hagerstown.

Pray even now for BRBA's summer missionary, Christie Clark. Pray that she would finish her semester well this Spring at Oklahoma Baptist University, and that God would prepare her heart for the task of helping our church this summer - here on our mission field.

Remember New Life church that they will faithfully engage their new neighborhood as a community of believers.

Take time today to pray for your Pastor, church staff, and lay leaders. They need your prayer support more than ever. Even better - write them a personal note telling them that you are praying for them, and encourage them in their work for the cause of Christ at your church!

James 5:16b“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Prayer is simply raising our hearts to
