4th of july grill out!Grilled Pork Tenderloin With Corn On The CobIt’s summer time in Arkansas, and we all know what that means... Grilling weather! Here is a great summertime recipe that is perfect for your 4th of July Celebration.

• 1 tablespoon paprika • Kosher salt & ground pepper • 1 teaspoon light brown sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon mustard powder • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 2 teaspoon Olive Oil (plus more for brushing) • 2 small Pork Tenderloins • 4 ears of corn, husked For the sauce:3/4 cup apple cider vinegar3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar2 tablespoons ketchup1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakesKosher salt

Make the pork: Combine the paprika, 2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, the brown sugar, cumin, mustard powder, onion powder and garlic powder in a bowl. Rub the olive oil all

over the pork, then coat with the spice rub. Wrap each tenderloin tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate 3 to 6 hours.

Make the sauce: Combine the vinegar, 1/2 cup water, the brown sugar, ketchup, red pepper flakes and 1 teaspoon salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves; remove from the heat.

Remove the pork from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before grilling. Preheat a grill to medium high. Cook the pork, turning occasionally, until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers

140 degrees F to 145 degrees F, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, brush the corn with olive oil; grill, turning, until marked, about 5 minutes. Slice the pork and drizzle with the sauce. Serve with the corn.

April 27 produced an EF4 category tornado that both destroyed and united Arkansas in one night. Sixteen people were killed, and more than 150 were injured. Vilonia and Mayflower were two central Arkansas towns that were hit the hardest, but other towns such as Paron and Centerhill were also affected. Research shows this was the deadliest twister in Arkansas since 1968.

Officials believe there would have been many more deaths if residents hadn’t gathered together in safe rooms and underground storm shelters. With 328 homes in Faulkner county destroyed and many others damaged, Arkansans are pulling together to help those affected rebuild their lives. Many schools and organizations are taking

donations, monetary, toy, etc. Businesses have been organizing efforts to help towns and families rebuild their infrastructure. To put it mildly, Arkansans have come together to take care of their neighbors. In addition, President Barack Obama traveled to the state in May to visit communities that were devastated. The level of destruction that the tornadoes of April 27 brought prompted Arkansas meteorologists to remind Arkansans about the importance of safety during tornado season. Knowing that the center of an interior room is the safest room in the house to take cover is vital. Being aware of the nearest storm shelter is even more important. The best way to

stay safe during a tornado is to be completely underground, and community storm shelters are ideal for those who do not have storm shelters or basements in their homes. It will take a while for the state to rebuild all that was destroyed, and sadly, many things that were lost are irreplaceable. Regardless, Arkansas continues to pull together for the good of the community and looks ahead to the future. Safety has become a top priority of many who were affected and/or involved in the rebuilding process. The number of community and personal shelters in Arkansas are both expected to rise in the near future.

Arkansas houses one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in North America: Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. It is rated as a “must-see” attraction by the Arkansas Department of Parks and

Tourism and included in Your Arkansas Hometown Magazine’s “Top Ten Things to Do This Summer.” The refuge was founded in response to an unfortunate situation created by a black market dealer and currently serves more than 100 big cats.

Don, Hilda, and Tanya Jackson received their first big cat, a lion, in 1978 during their stay in North East Texas. By 1982, they were successfully caring for two of them in their own backyard. In the mid- 1980s, another seemingly avid animal-lover, Katherine Gordon Twiss, also known as “Critter Mama” of Crawford County, Indiana, fled Texas after local authorities threatened to take possession of the slew of animals she maintained at her property. It has been said that she kept more than 150 of them. She’d been approached multiple times about illegally hauling dead livestock and maintaining cruel and unsafe conditions for the leopards, lions, tigers, bears, etc., that she collected. In 1991, she arrived on the Jackson family’s doorstep with forty-two big cats bundled into three cattle trailers. Luckily, a friend of the family, who owned a nearly 500-acre ranch in Eureka Springs, offered a temporary place for the cats. Remarkably, the construction of forty-two temporary cages was completed within a short period.

When news of the temporary refuge spread, the Jackson family began receiving tons of calls from all over the country. Private wildlife owners needed homes for their exotic cats that they could no longer care for. To solve this newfound problem, the family sold everything they owned

in Hope, AR and moved to Eureka Springs to officially start the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in 1992.

Of the many refuges in the United States, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest facilities of its kind open to the public anywhere in the world. Today, the refuge provides a sanctuary for over 100 exotic

cats and bears. Visitors are encouraged to spend a day with them. For those who wish to enjoy a longer stay, on-site lodging and RV space is available.

Both self-guided and guided tours are accessible for a small admission fee that is used to help finance the refuge’s operations. Turpentine Creek’s main priorities are to rehabilitate neglected, abused, and unwanted big cats in the United States and to educate the public about their plight. The Education Station, twenty-minute Keeper Talks, and 11 a.m. Habitat Tours that are offered are all designed to help fulfill this goal.

Having the opportunity to watch the big cats running and playing has proved to be a real treat for many families and friends. For some, this is the closest they have ever been and will ever be to a lion, tiger, or bobcat. The summer is a perfect time to stop by for a couple of hours, a day, or even a weekend. A trip to one of the largest big cat refuges in the world is an adventure no one in Arkansas should want to miss!

For the first time, Dickey-Stephens Park serves as the site of the Texas League’s All-Star event, which includes hot air balloon rides, mechanical bull rides, autograph sessions, post game fireworks and

the Home Run Derby presented by Heart of Arkansas United Way. On June 24, Dickey-Stephens Park, home of the Arkansas Travelers in North Little Rock, will host the 78th All-Star Game. You will not want to miss it!

The last time the All-Star game was played in Pulaski County was in 2006 at Ray Winder Field, the year before the Travelers moved to their new home on the banks of the Arkansas River.

The game has been a showcase for future Major League Baseball (MLB) players and All-Stars. Players from the 2006 All-Star game at Ray Winder included names such as Troy Tulowitski, an All-Star with the Colorado Rockies, Hunter Pence of the San Francisco Giants, Ben Zobrist of the Tampa Bay Rays, Kurt Suzuki of the Minnesota Twins and Chris Ianetta of the Los Angeles Angels. The winning pitcher was Ubaldo Jimenez, who came up through the Rockies organization and is now with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Travelers became the AA affiliate for the Los Angeles Angels in 2001, and a number of major league players have spent time here in Little Rock. Fans who followed the team in recent years remember the names Eric Aybar, Howie Kendrick, Mike Napoli, Hank Conger, Garrett Richards, Mark Trumbo, Peter Bourjos, Jean Segura, Randal Grichuk and, most notably, Mike Trout.

“Mike Trout was in a category all his own,” said Phil Elson, the radio voice of the Travelers the past 13 years. “No question, he’s the best player I’ve ever seen up close. I grew up in Pittsburgh watching Barry Bonds turn into a star, and I would put Trout on that level.”

Trout played for a little less than one full season for the Travelers, having been called up by the Angels in September while the Travs were playing in the Texas League championship series. Trout reminisces, “I really enjoyed my time in Little Rock and was amazed at the passion of the fans. I loved the city and the atmosphere the fans provided every night.”

The festivities will begin on Monday, June 23 with the Texas League All-Star Gala at the Little Rock Double Tree. This event features an Autograph Session, Catered Dinner and Guest Speaker.

On June 24, gates open at Dickey-Stephens Park for the Texas League All Star Game at 3:00 p.m. The first 1,500 fans inside get a free copy of the All Star Game Program. Then, the North Division All-Star Team takes the field for batting practice at 3:15 p.m. followed by the South Division All-Star Team at approximately 4:15 p.m. Each team will have a free autograph session after their batting practices for fans on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Texas League Home Run Derby presented by Heart of Arkansas United Way begins at 6:00 p.m. A special target will be placed past the outfield wall which features a $100,000 charitable jackpot if a player hits it with a home run.

Then at 7:15 p.m. the first pitch of the 78th Texas League All-Star Game presented by Farm Bureau Insurance is thrown. After the game stick around for a huge post game fireworks extravaganza to cap off the event.

“Get tickets to the All-Star game. Make plans to arrive early to take in all that the team has planned,” Elson said. “It will be a fun time for the kids and whole family. You won’t want to miss it.”

• Beaver Lake - Has given up several 40-pound-plus state record stripers. One prime hot spot encompasses the huge flats near where the White River and War Eagle join in the upper portion of Beaver.

10 • Buffalo National River - The country’s first national river, the scenic Buffalo National River flows roughly 150 miles and offers boaters premier whitewater floating in the Arkansas Ozarks. Fishing, rock climbing and wildlife watching (especially of the state’s elk herd) are major draws too.

9 Cycling

• Big Dam Bridge (road) - 102 miles. Start in LR under the Broadway Street bridge. In 6 miles, you will roll across the The Big Dam Bridge. Then pass through Maumelle, Mayflower, Conway, up Wye Mtn., toward Pinnacle Mtn. and back over the new 2 Rivers Bridge. Along the way there will be a total of nine aid stations to help keep you supplied.

• Pinnacle Mtn. State Park (MTB) - 7.4 miles. The Jackfork Mountain Biking Trail is an intermediate to advanced mountain biking trail through a rarely seen part of Pinnacle Mtn.

5 Wildlife attractions

• Wilderness Drive Through Safari This 400-acre safari is home to a variety of exotic animals that live in the natural environment of an Arkansas landscape. Safari consists of a four-mile drive-through, petting parks, and walk-through areas for interaction with the animals..

• Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (Eureka Springs)- With over 450 acres and 100+ exotic cats, it is one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in N. America, a non-profit organization providing lifetime homes for abandoned, abused and neglected exotic cats.

• Arkansas Alligator Farm & Petting Zoo (Hot Springs)- Offers a huge petting zoo, over 300 alligators, a great variety of animals, and alligator feeding shows. It has been in operation since 1902.

• Little Rock Zoo - Nationally accredited 40-acre zoological garden, housing over 700 mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians representing 170 species, some of which are on the endangered list.

• Devils Den - Here trails weave through, around and over one of the largest crevice areas in North America. Explore Devil’s Den Cave, hike to Yellow Rock Overlook, stop and rest along the Lee Creek Trail, or go backpacking along the 15-mile Butterfield Hiking Trail. The park features 20 miles of hiking trails that explore historic home sites, natural bridges, caves and waterfalls of the Ozarks.• Mt. Magazine - Arkansas’s 2,753-foot high point. Traditional bouldering, sport climbing & rappelling is allowed on the mountain’s south bluff overlooking the Petit Jean River Valley. This 1,500-foot wide stretch of sandstone boasts more than 100 routes up to 80 feet high.

These tips are a starting point from which to begin putting that plan into action. A great way to start losing weight is to snack on something healthy every time you feel a hunger pang come on. Dieting can be tough, and it’s typical to give in to cravings. By snacking on something healthier, you’ll feed your appetite without sabotaging your diet. A good way to lose weight is to cut out all of the soda you drink. Soda is loaded with sugar and carbohydrates and most of us aren’t very cognizant about how much we actually drink. Cut out all of the empty calories you take in from soda and start drinking water, a healthier alternative. Examine your interests and find an exercise program that you enjoy now, and will probably enjoy six months from now. It’s important to choose exercises that you like, so that you will actually get excited about the opportunity to work out. A good way to lose weight is to incorporate healthy fats into your diet. A lot of people are scared of the word fat, but what most people don’t know is that there are good fats that are crucial to our health. An example of a good fat source is salmon. Stop thinking about losing weight. In other words, give

yourself time to think about something else, and to spend

your leisure time doing something other than exercise. Everyone needs a break sometimes, and taking time off to forget that you are trying to lose weight will give you time to regroup and rest for a while. Do not compare yourself to the people that you see on television. These people hire professionals to help aide them in their wight loss. Their diets are supplemented by certain foods that would not be healthy to a normal person. Just focus on becoming like the average person and not a celebrity on tv. Once you have embarked on a new fitness routine, you may be tempted to overdo it. To build your strength and stamina, you should push yourself only slightly more each time you go into your chosen activity. Stretching afterwards is key to ensuring you protect the muscles you are building. In order to maintain your weight loss it is important to keep the new habits you learned while losing weight. If you increased your fruits and vegetables, stopped drinking soda, and started exercising, you will still need to do that. You cannot work hard to reach your goal and then expect to stay there without effort. Weight loss can be a roller coaster ride if you are not focused on your plan. The tips and advice you have read here are some helpful ways to begin to take control. Devise and build a plan that is suited to your needs and your way of life and be consistent. Roller coasters are only fun in amusement parks.

Arkansas “The Natural State” is blessed with an abundance of geological wonders. Crater of Diamonds State Park, the only diamond-producing site in the world open to the public, stands out as a unique geological “gem” for everyone to enjoy.

Here you can experience a one-of-a-kind adventure hunting for real diamonds. You’ll search over a 37 1/2-acre plowed field, the eroded grounds of an ancient volcanic crater that 100 million years ago brought to the surface the diamonds and some of the semi-precious stones lucky visitors find here today. You will access this field through the Diamond Discovery Center, an engaging interpretive center featuring exhibits and programs explaining the most popular methods of searching for diamonds. The park staff is also available to provide free identification and certification of diamonds found here.

Of all the Arkansas state parks, the Crater of Diamonds has had arguably the most colorful history, with stories of treasure hunters and the diamonds found in Arkansas through the decades. Many remnants of old mining ventures remain within the park boundary, including the Mine Shaft Building, the Guard House, mining plant foundations, old mining

equipment and smaller artifacts. Nowhere else is North American diamond mining history as evident or as well preserved as here. For years, locals wondered about the unusual green dirt about two miles south of the small farming community of Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Geologists examined the soil in the late 1800s and found it to be similar to diamond-bearing volcanic material elsewhere in the world, but they failed to uncover any of the precious stones at that time. Early in the 20th century, a local farmer named John Wesley Huddleston purchased land near Murfreesboro, which included part of this volcanic material. In August 1906, he discovered the first diamonds on his property. Known as Arkansas’s “Diamond King,” Huddleston soon sold his land to a commercial mining company for $36,000. A diamond rush quickly developed as soon as word of the finds got out.

The men who bought the Huddleston property began the Arkansas Diamond Company. However, there were 40 acres of diamond-bearing soil that had not been owned by Huddleston. M.M. Mauney owned that land, and he refused to sell. Mauney tried to personally mine his own property and even allowed visitors to search for a fee. In 1949, the first real attempt was made to open the Arkansas diamond field to the public. The land was leased and opened in 1951 as the Diamond Preserve of the United States. Later, the name was changed to the Crater of Diamonds. It continued as a private tourist attraction until 1972 when the State of Arkansas bought the land for $750,000 to develop as a state park. Diamonds can come in all colors of the rainbow. The three colors unearthed here

at Crater of Diamonds are white, brown and yellow, in that order. Crater of Diamonds State Park is a rock hound’s delight since, along with diamonds, more than 40 types of rocks and minerals can found here, too. These rocks and minerals include lamproite, amethyst, banded agate, jasper, peridot, garnet, quartz, calcite, barite, and hematite.

Famous FindsThe Strawn-Wagner Diamond On permanent display in the visitor center at Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park, the site where this splendid stone was discovered, the Strawn-Wagner Diamond is the most perfect diamond the American Gem Society (AGS) ever certified in its laboratory. Graded the perfect grade of O/O/O (Ideal cut/D color/Flawless),” it is the highest grade a diamond can achieve. Found at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in 1990 by Shirley Strawn of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, this diamond weighed 3.03 carats in the rough. A diamond this perfect, and weighing over a carat after cutting, is estimated to occur one time in a billion.

The Uncle Sam DiamondThis 40.23-carat, white diamond is the biggest diamond ever found in the United States. Discovered here in 1924, it was named the Uncle Sam diamond.

The Kahn Canary Diamond The 4.25-carat Kahn Canary was worn by first lady Hillary Clinton at her husband’s Presidential Inaugural galas in 1993 and 1997 as a special way to represent Arkansas’s diamond site. The diamond’s owner, Stan Kahn of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, loaned the diamond to Mrs. Clinton. Found in 1977. Nature formed this diamond into a perfect dodecahedral, pillow shape, and gave it a vibrant yellow color called “canary” in the diamond industry. It was left uncut because of its flawless natural beauty.

10 Tips For Getting More Enjoyment Out Of Every Day

1. Value simplicity. The simpler things are, the less distracted we will be. We need to de-clutter our environment and our minds. We seem to accumulate physical, mental and emotional clutter. We end up rushing from one demanding situation to another with no real feeling of accomplishment. To quiet our minds and restore a sense of order to our lives, we need to value simplicity.

2. Experience your activities. How often are you doing one thing and

thinking about another? If we never take the time to actually be in the moment, then are we really living our life? Even the most mundane activities can be enjoyable if we stay centered on the actual experience. In this over stimulated, out of balance and hectic world, simple activities that are fully experienced can be enjoyable if we let them.

3. Savor the little things. The next time you eat a piece of fruit or enjoy a cup of coffee, simply enjoy it. Wrap your senses around it and savor the experience. Our senses of smell and taste are connected to our brains pleasure center. When you savor what goes into your body you tend to enjoy it more.

4. Add variety to your routine. Don’t be afraid to try something new! It could be something as simple as taking a different route to get to work or as complex as learning to play a musical instrument. Instead of turning on the TV after dinner, go for a walk in the fresh air. Now is the time to do something you’ve always wanted to do!

5. Make time for what you love. If all we ever did was work on our obligations, it could become difficult to find joy in our day-to-day experience. It’s important to take care of our responsibilities, but we should also try to balance the “need to do” activities with a few things we really want to do. If we never make the time to do things we are excited about, we could easily start resenting our lives. That’s why it is important to find things we really enjoy.

6. Drop unnecessary commitments. Just as we need to make time for doing things we love, we also need to work toward minimizing the things that just consume time and energy with no real payoff. Granted, some things simply aren’t negotiable, but other so-called obligations aren’t really necessary. For each commitment, ask yourself if it is enhancing your life or is it just adding more stress? If it doesn’t add any positive benefit, drop it!

7. Focus on what matters. There is productivity and there is busy work. Sometimes it can be difficult to recognize the difference because it varies for each of us. It’s up to each of us to analyze our own situation and apportion our time accordingly. Focus on the things that can bring happiness into your life.

8. Learn to let go! When it comes to relaxation, the body follows the mind.

If your mind is busy obsessing over things, then you are not relaxed. Your body can only experience relaxation if your mind has let go of anything and everything that causes stress, worry, or anxiety. You will enjoy your life a lot more if you take some time every day to practice letting go. Focus on the present and the future - let go of your past.

9. Embrace generosity. There are endless opportunities to contribute to the lives of others. Any act of kindness is an act of generosity. Smile at strangers, hold the door open for the person behind you or listen if a friend needs to talk. These simple acts of kindness don’t cost you anything, but they add enjoyment to your life and the lives of those around you.

10. Do a daily gratitude review. Focusing on gratitude will change your life on every level. It is so easy to get caught up in selfish pursuits and forget how much there is to be grateful for. Gratitude is the antidote for selfishness. If you take a minute every morning and every evening to review your blessings, you will start to notice more and more things to be grateful for. Of all the ways to get more enjoyment out of every day, this is the simplest and the most powerful. If you only put one thing from this list into action in your life, this should definitely be it.

What do the professional boxing community, United States government, NBA, NASA, and the entertainment industry all have in common? They have all been impacted by the influence of native Arkansans. The Natural State has produced a number of successful people who have touched the world in one unique way or another, and naturally, we expect that to continue. Most recently, we discovered Brandon Lackey, the number one wakeboarder in the country within the 30-39 age bracket, living in Hot Springs, AR.

Brandon was born in north central Arkansas near Greers Ferry Lake. It’s no surprise that his family took advantage of this popular 50-mile long water paradise. At age seven, he was water skiing, and by age 11, wakeboarding. As his interest in the sport grew over time, so did that of other Americans. In fact, it has grown so much that it is now America’s fastest growing water sport.

Wakeboarding’s popularity is huge in places on the coast, i.e., Texas, Florida, California, etc., but now, it is beginning to pick up in Arkansas. Our state is an ideal place for this sport because of the large number of great lakes we have. Lake

Ouachita, recognized for its clear waters and scenic beauty, is one Brandon praised above many of the lakes he’s experienced in other states. “I’ve been a lot of places, but Arkansas will always be my number one spot.”

At our request, Brandon took some time to enlighten us on exactly what wakeboarding is. Though not entirely, you can compare it to surfboarding, water skiing, etc. To partake in this sport, individuals must place their feet in boots that are bound to a wakeboard and hold onto a rope that is attached to a powerboat as it tows them through the water. They can then choose to merely ride up the wake and enjoy time in the air, or use that time to attempt mind-boggling jumps and tricks sure to stop any bystanders in their tracks. A popular, yet similar, alternative to wakeboarding is wakesurfing. This sport does not require a rope, just a board and a boat. It is considered more of a family water sport since the rider is usually much closer in range to the boat, rides at much slower speeds, and merely surfs on top of the wake.

We went on a tour of S&G Xtreme Marine, a water sport shop located in both Sherwood and Hot Springs, to see what it has to offer. Brandon, the company’s Hot Springs store manager, led the way. From boats and wakeboards to life jackets and ropes, we found everything we need to start

wakeboarding today. While the company only carries premium gear, the 30-year old wakeboarder informed us that he is a little partial to the Byerly and Hyperlite products. With Hyperlite having been around since the beginning of wakeboarding, it’s no wonder that this brand is popular amongst both amateur and veteran wakeboarders.

Beginners fall in love with this sport because it is new, exciting, and easy to learn. Experienced wakeboarders adore this sport because of the thrill of flipping fifteen to twenty feet into the air before a picturesque landing back into the water. Talk about living in the moment! Brandon assured us that in only one of his training sessions, we could learn to wakeboard in only one day! During the week, he works as store manager, and on weekends, he dedicates time to teaching aspiring wakeboarders. Brandon has taught kids as young as four to wakeboard, although five is usually more common. The drive behind his passion for coaching others in wakeboarding is the positive impact it had on his life. “It gave me something to focus on and work towards. It really gave me an identity.” While he no longer actively competes locally, he continues to compete in national events, as it is a significant part of who he is and provides him with better ways to teach. “I want to show people how to enjoy the sport like I have.” “There’s a lot more to wakeboarding than just being out, strapped into the board with a rope in your hand. It’s an experience watching someone try it, even if they fail.”

Once again, Arkansas gives us something to marvel about. Producing the country’s number one 30-year-old wakeboarder is quite an accomplishment. He and the other great people our state has produced always find ways to give back. With Brandon’s passion for teaching others more about the sport along with its increasing local and national popularity, we are looking forward to seeing more and more wakeboards in Arkansas’ lakes this summer. In fact, our local expert believes that everyone, no matter what age, needs to try it at least once.
