Welcome to the August issue of Your
Benfleet & Hadleigh Magazine!
I‟m putting the finishing touches to this
month‟s magazine after returning from a
lovely day at the 20th annual Castle Point
Show. There was plenty to do for all ages and
you can read more about the event on page 8.
Also in this month‟s magazine, we introduce
you to the Benfleet Horticultural Society and
one of the newest businesses to open in the
area - “The Muddy Creek.”
One of the great pleasures I have in producing
our magazines is the wonderful people I get to
meet. In June, I was interviewed on the
“Getting to Know You” spot of the local
community radio station Link Radio. I was

Benfleet Horticultural Society
The Benfleet Horticultural Society
currently has 600 members and
provides a meeting place for like-
minded gardeners to discuss any
problems they may have and hopefully
find the answers.
The society was formed in 1920 and is
served by an active committee who manage
the running of a store, organize three flower
shows a year, organise club and quiz nights,
produce a year book and newsletters and
arrange one or two coach trips a year.
The Store
The store at Cemetery Corner, Benfleet
provides the finance to run the society and is
staffed by volunteers with a wealth of
gardening experience. Prices are kept to an
absolute minimum wherever possible.
The shop stocks a full range of basket plants
including Fuscias, trailing and upright
Geraniums, Begonias and many others. A
good selection of bedding plants is also
available such as Buzy Lizzy, Marigolds and
Pansies.
In the vegetable range, there are at least 5
varieties of tomato, runner beans, 3 types of
cucumber, marrows and courgettes to name
but a few.
Membership is open to everyone who has an
interest in growing plants, flowers and
vegetables for food or for showing. The cost
of joining the society is just £2 a year per
household and you would normally expect to
save this amount with your first purchase in
the shop.

20th Castle Point Show
Families from across the borough
enjoyed a fun-filled, action packed day
out at the 20th annual Castle Point
Show on Sunday 24th July.
This year, the Show was bigger and better
than ever having joined forces with the ever
popular Rubbish Riot Day. Visitors to the
show were able to enjoy demonstrations
from local groups including Judo, marching
bands, dance groups, a football tournament
and classic car show. The event was also
well supported by local businesses and non-
profit making organisations including the
Canvey Carnival Association, Canvey
Community Archive, St John‟s Ambulance,
Canvey Breathe Easy group and the Air
Training Corps.
There was plenty to keep the children
occupied from face painting and bouncy
castles to go-karting. The Rubbish Riot Day
provided a whole range of fun activities
aimed at helping residents understand all
about waste, recycling and the wider
environment.
The show this year was sponsored by
PetroPlus Coryton Refinery & Thames
Ambulance Training Services.
Families were entertained with demonstrations from
local groups including Judo, marching bands and a
football tournament

A new, family friendly cafe has opened
in Benfleet - The Muddy Creek. From
the huge range of delicious low priced
breakfasts, hot baguettes and chunky
chips to exceptional cream teas, you
can expect to leave full and with
change in your pocket.
The Muddy Creek is run by husband and
wife team Ben and Wendy Benson and was
born from a desire to serve food they like to
eat themselves. The menu is simple and low
priced yet delicious and only the finest and
freshest ingredients from our own local High
Road butchers and green grocers are used.
The name “Muddy Creek” came to Wendy
after a dream about Benfleet and what it has
to offer. The most iconic part of Benfleet has
to be the Creek which whenever you cross
just never seems to have any water. The
name therefore reflects the most tranquil and
beautiful creek around these parts which
always seems to be muddy!
You can expect excellent service as there are
now four additional employees who will
assist you in your food choice and ensure
you receive it quickly and with a smile. The
décor is both relaxing and tranquil, with
chandeliers, settees and a delightful water
garden area with a raised decking and plenty
of tables.

Learning for Life in Benfleet
Many years ago a
postgraduate
student at the
London School of
Economics used to
travel each week
to Benfleet to
teach history to a
class at the
Benfleet Branch of
the WEA. Known
now through his
television series on Monarchy, the
Tudors and Henry VIII, Dr. David
Starkey still found time to return to
Benfleet in 2003 for a Celebratory
Lunch when the WEA was 100 years
old.
When the WEA was founded it was called
Association to Promote the Higher
Education of Working Men but the name was
changed to The Workers Educational
Association in 1905. The WEA is the UK‟s
largest voluntary provider of adult education
and one of the biggest charities. They
employ course tutors and a small
professional staff and aim to provide
friendly, informal and enjoyable courses
with expert tutors. However, the WEA‟s
strength lies in the work of the voluntary
members who govern the organisation and
run local branches. Volunteers and staff in
the WEA have been committed to providing
education for adults in their communities
since the organisation was founded.
WEA largely consists of students who
believe that lifelong learning should mean
just what it says - that they can continue to
choose what they learn and how and where
they learn it for as long as they are able. No
formal academic qualifications are required
for any of their courses and they welcome
especially people who have previously
missed out on education or who can‟t find
what they want from other educational
organisations. None of their courses involve
homework or exams!!
Classes last ten weeks, starting October and
January. The fee for each course in
2011-12 is £57.00 which at £5.70 a week
represents extremely good value for a two
hour class. Furthermore, no-one need feel
excluded as financial support is available for
those on low incomes. In addition to the
regular classes, they also run a One-Day
School each year. The usual venue is St.
George‟s Church Hall, Rushbottom Lane
just north of Tarpots.
If you would like to attend any of these
classes or would like further details please
ring Philip Narbrough on 01268 759392.

South Essex Koi Club
The South Essex Koi Club is a friendly
local club holding meetings once a
month at St Mary’s Hall in Benfleet.
The club was formed 11 years ago by a
group of koi enthusiasts who decided that a
new type of Koi Club was needed to
promote their hobby. Although there were
other groups in the area, the founder
members found them all to be run in a very
formal manner with committees and wanted
something without all the red tape often
involved in larger organisations.
The club members all believe that learning
doesn‟t have to be a serious process and try
to make the meetings fun. All members get
support from others in the club from
microscopic diagnosis of koi ailments to a
discounted shop for food and pond parts.
They also hold an annual dinner and dance
and regular trips to other clubs in the south
of England.

Creating a Loving Relationship with Money coaching programme entitled
Money Breakthrough Method. The
lady who started the programme is
dedicated to helping women to
earn good income by doing what
they love, something that has
become my mission too, in
addition to my therapy work of
course!
In the programme we looked at our
deepest beliefs about money, what
we‟d heard about it as children from parents,
teachers and other people we respected. For
instance, you may believe that rich people
are unpopular and dishonest and it‟s better to
be poor and honest. Or you might have seen
that money is hard to come by, you have to
work REALLY hard for it and it can
disappear in an instant, leaving you destitute
so you should never spend anything. I
discovered that the ideas and beliefs I had
taken on as my own, were running my life
and not in ways that were making me happy
or successful in business.
The course had a profound effect on my life;
it brought on a big financial crisis that I had
to tackle head on. I went from being scared
to check my bank account to knowing
exactly what goes in and out and keeping a
daily check on everything financial. Drama
around money is exhausting and stressful
and now I help my students set up systems
so they know exactly what is going on.
Then we can relax, concentrate on earning
money, paying off any debts we have
accumulated and get on with enjoying life!
If you would like to learn more and find
your happy relationship with money, I‟m
running Discovery Evenings every few
weeks in Hadleigh! Contact me on 01702
558623 for a chat and more information.
There aren’t many subjects that are
more emotional than money. The way
we run our finances mirrors the rest of
our life. If your finances are a pickle, the
chances are that other areas of your life
are too! However, all is not lost! After
a crisis in my own financial life last year,
I discovered that, with a few
adjustments, we can have a much
happier relationship with money.
I‟ve been self employed for 18 years and in
recent years, my income hadn‟t gone up at all.
I kept thinking I was doing something wrong
and would try to fix the problem by working
harder. Frustrated, broke and curious, I started
investigating what was in my way and why
some people earn plenty of money with ease
and some just don‟t. What a revelation!
I always thought that I had difficulty charging
for my services and raising my prices and as I
had come from my nursing, NHS background
where we‟re not used to billing our patients
personally for caring for them. I realised that
was just a little bit of the issue as a lot of
business people have the same challenge. The
real barrier was me, Rosemary and how I
valued myself and what do. On a deep level, I
didn‟t think what I did was good enough to be
well paid for my work.
In my research, I discovered an incredible

Link Radio Trust
Angela Owen with Chairman John Brennan
I was pleased to be invited to appear
on the “Getting To Know You” spot
on Link Radio, a voluntary local
station providing a radio service
tailored to the residents of sheltered
accommodation.
Link Radio Trust has been running for 25
years and is broadcast 365 days a year, 24
hours a day to elderly residents in sheltered
housing schemes through-out Essex. It is
manned and run solely by volunteers who
willingly donate their time not only to
broadcasting but to raising the much needed
funds to keep the station going.
The station was founded in 1984 by John
Brennan who is still the chairman of the
trust. It provides all types of music and a
whole range of shows including Gardening
programmes, and feature shows such as
“Getting to know you” and “Story Time” -
both of which feature people in the
community that have a interesting story to
tell.
Since the outset, Link Radio Trust has been
entirely self funding. Manned entirely by
unpaid volunteers, the running costs have
been manageable over the years by
holding a number of excellent
fundraising events. This year,
however, there is a problem and a
need to raise a large amount of funds.
The Hadleigh based studio has been
affected by subsidence and wood rot
and needs to be completely rebuilt in
order to continue providing the much
loved radio service to the elderly. A
total of £100,000 is needed and
various events are currently in the
pipeline to raise money to have the
studio re-built. Fundraising is already

6th August 1991
It was today that Tim Berners-Lee released his
text-based Web software to the public creating
the beginnings of the World Wide Web and
general public use of the Internet.
Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in 1955.
He became the primary inventor of the
software program known as the World Wide
Web. In 1989, Berners-Lee and his
colleagues created a communications protocol
called HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
that standardised communication between
computer servers and clients.
7th August 1840
An Act of Parliament was passed today
prohibiting the employment of children under
16 as chimney sweeps. Chimney
sweeping was a job children could do better
than adults and small boys were employed to
climb and scramble up chimneys. Their task
was to brush clean the inside of the flue with
small hand-held brushes.
The chimneys were usually very narrow (in
some cases as small as 30cm) and twisted. The
boys would come down covered in soot, and
with bleeding elbows and knees. Children
often got stuck or froze with terror in the
cramped darkness - in these cases the Master
Chimney Sweeper would simply light the fire
underneath to “encourage” them to get on
with their work. The work was dangerous and
painful. Some boys got stuck and died of
suffocation.
18th August 1868
On this day, a French astronomer spotted an
unknown element, now known as helium, in
the spectrum of the sun during a much-
anticipated total eclipse. As it was first
discovered by studying the Sun, the name
Helium was derived from the Greek word for
sun, helios.
It wasn‟t until 1895 that British chemist
William Ramsay proved the existence of
helium on Earth in his studies of a radioactive
ore material from Norway. Helium is a very
small and extremely light gaseous element. It
is odourless and tasteless. Helium is the
second most abundant element in the universe
with only hydrogen occurring more often.

This month, Michael Clark (Registered Osteopath, Nutrition & Holistic Lifestyle Coach) discusses top tips for healthy weight loss.
NEVER go on a diet
Dieting refers to a dietary restriction of calorie
intake. Depriving the body of calories or any
important nutrient such as fat, protein etc may
cause initial weight loss, however the body
cannot tell the difference between a restriction
of calories from a diet or starvation and will
quickly kick into survival mode. According to
the World Health Organisation “starvation
begins below 2100 calories per day.” Below
this level fat storage will increase and your
ability to burn fat will reduce. Research has
shown low calorie diets at least DOUBLE fat
storing enzymes and cause fat cells to literally
grow larger, in addition your body will
HALVE your fat releasing enzymes. This
means you are twice as efficient at storing fat
and half as efficient at releasing and shrinking
your fat cells. Furthermore your body will try
to conserve energy, avoiding calorie burning
by slowing the metabolism and breaking
down muscle tissue.
NEVER skip breakfast
Skipping meals is common mistake in an
attempt to try and achieve a healthy weight.
Every time you skip a meal your body
responds by increasing fat storage as a means
of survival. The more regularly we skip meals
the more efficient the body will become at
storing fat making it progressively more
difficult to lose weight particularly for women
who are genetic pre-programmed to be more
efficient at storing fat than men.
NEVER go on a fat-free diet
There is a huge amount of misinformation
regarding the roles of fats in health and body
weight. The most common is „eating fat will
make you fat‟- this is simply untrue. Quite the
opposite, research has shown that when
women diet, those eating the lowest level of
fat weigh the most. The quality of the fat is
the key. Grass-fed organic beef and beef fat,
naturally raised lamb, organic raw dairy
products (butter, cheese, milk,
cream) and coconut oil are the best.
QUALITY fats have many health
benefits such as:
Fat and quality protein satisfies
hunger for longer reducing the
chances of over eating or making
poor food choices.
Helping build healthy hormones
Supporting the immune system
due to antiviral agents (caprylic
acid.)
Healthy brain and nerve function
(the brain is mainly made of fat
and cholesterol.)
Stronger bones (fat is required for calcium
to be effectively incorporated into the
bones.)
Fat is a huge subject which I cannot go to into
enough detail here. For more information I
suggest reading the book Eat Fat, Lose Fat by
Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD. or
visiting www.mercola.com and entering „The
33 www.yourlocalmags.co.uk
Truth About Saturated Fat‟ in the search
engine.
DRINK plenty of water
It‟s common to mistake thirst for hunger.
Drinking plenty of quality water regularly
throughout the day will speed up your
metabolism and decrease snaking. It can be
difficult initially to remember to drink water.
Carrying a bottle of water with you will help.
If you find it difficult to drink plenty of water
then start with a small bottle and gradually
increase your intake until you are drinking a
large bottle or more every day.
EAT high quality food
As I have stated in previous articles to achieve
good health and optimum weight it is essential
to consume the highest quality
foods possible. This includes
fresh seasonal vegetables, soil
association organic whenever
possible, free range meats, wild
caught fish etc.
EXERCISE regularly
Muscle cells are very
metabolically active. This
means to keep a muscle cell
alive in your body requires
approximately 14x more energy
than to have a fat cell. Muscles
burn energy around the clock
even when sleeping therefore
reducing excess fat stores. Strength training is
more effective at maintaining lean muscle
mass and low visceral fat levels than
cardiovascular training. Women can easily
stay slim and gain lean muscle tone without
becoming overly big by incorporating strength
training. Sports men and women such as
gymnasts, figure skaters, power lifters etc.
perform high levels of strength training and
low levels of cardio training but have among
the lowest visceral fat levels in sport.
GET quality rest and sleep
Establish a healthy balance between exercise
with rest, relaxation and quality sleep.
Insufficient rest and too much stress are
associated with an accumulation of fat
around the mid-section. Achieving a good
night sleep and going to bed earlier will help
you wake up feeling alert, refreshed and
reduce the cravings of sugar and caffeine to
get you going. Unwinding with a relaxing
book, listening to music, having a bath, and
anything that makes you feel relaxed has
been shown to help weight loss.
Achieving an ideal body weight is all about
incorporating healthy lifestyle choices rather
than depriving the body of nutrients and
over exercising.
