Dear Foundation Friends,St. Joseph’s, Memorial, Southwest Washington Medical Center and now PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center – a journey that began over 150 years ago is once again entering a new phase. It is an exciting and invigorating time for all of us at the Medical Center, but also a time of questions for many of our donors. For answers to queries such as, “Will the Southwest Foundation remain the same?” be sure to read the article on PeaceHealth in this issue.

The cover article is about your brain. There are many serious diseases, but the ones that rob a patient of the capacity to think, to maintain relationships with family and friends, and to manage their own lives are among the most destructive.

Through decades of key physician leadership and hospital commitment, Southwest has built an exceptional neurosurgery program complemented by an outstanding rehabilitation program ranked highest in the Portland metro area. If you have followed the progress of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, you are aware of the importance top neurosurgery and rehabilitation programs are playing in her recovery. Fortunately, similar levels of clinical support are available at Southwest.

Enjoy this issue of Partners, and rest assured that though our name will change slightly, the Southwest Foundation remains a vital force in strengthening the quality of medical care for you and your family.

Sincerely,

Jean C. Rahn

“I’m here for joy,”says Foundation donor and Cascade Society member Neville Bayly. And you can see it in her bright blue eyes and hear it in her animated laughter. She laughs despite having had brain surgery in 2004, and continuing to face challenges that include memory loss and seizures.

A woman dedicated to caring for the world and the people in it, Neville spent years working as a medical professional. A certified nursing assistant for 15 years, she was also employed as a rehab tech at a physical rehabilitation facility in southern California. It was there she met and worked alongside Foundation Board member Dr. Robert Djergaian, the facility’s then-director of the coma and head injury unit.

Life changed dramatically in 2001. After 6 years of what she thought were panic attacks following a big scare, Neville was diagnosed with a small benign, slow-growing tumor. In 2004, she underwent amygdala-hippocampectomy surgery. The hippocampus, which houses short-term memory, and the amygdala which controls stimulus response, were partially excised.

The epilepsy, surgery and recovery made raising her son Peter difficult. However, she held firmly to her

father’s wisdom that, “There are always four or five solutions to every problem.” As life was returning to some normalcy, and her teaching and healing arts practice was growing, Neville was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003.

Yet she considers herself lucky. A long-time practitioner of Buddhism, her training reminds her of life’s impermanence. “We are here for such a short time. For me, it’s not what happens that matters as much as how I choose to see it. Looking at all of it, life has and continues to be a blessing I wish to share with others.”

Recently, struggles with her memory have advanced, and she is experiencing seizures. Consequently, she has stopped driving and enjoying her evening red wine. What hasn’t changed is her “joie de vivre.” Besides her friends and family, she finds great joy in volunteering, creative cooking and classical music.

“If you can see your challenges as oppor- tunities for personal growth and never give up, then you truly know why you’re here.”

Neurosciences…it’s a term that not many people are familiar with. However, words like stroke, aneurism, brain and spine surgery, traumatic brain injury are more common. Neurosciences is the umbrella under which all these services/conditions fall. At Southwest, our physician expertise and technology rival any other health system in the nation. Because we have fellowship-trained neurosurgeons, a neurologist with specialized training in stroke, radiation oncology

including CyberKnife®, physical and rehabilitation medicine, neuroradiology, ENT physicians and inpatient rehabilitation we are able to offer this community elite care for neurovascular conditions and brain tumors including complicated skull-base surgeries.

TOP-RANKED Southwest is among the top hospitals for stroke care. In recent results from HealthGrades’ 13th Annual Hospital Quality Study, Southwest was top in stroke care among Portland-Vancouver hospitals. Researchers used Medicare records to determine risk-adjusted mortality to complication rates to 26 major procedures. Learn more about Southwest’s stroke program at www.swmedicalcenter.org/strokecenter.

Not only do our Medical Center and Foundation rely on financial generosity, we also rely on generosity of time and talent. Our Foundation is lucky to have so many wonderful Board members who share the Medical Center’s mission to raise the funds necessary for investing in the very best medical equipment and facilities, as well as care for people who can't pay for some or all of the healthcare they need.

Please welcome these five wonderful new members!

Introducing... New Foundation Board Members

Linda Angelo is a high energy, enthusiastic community volunteer and donor. She and her husband Corky donated generously to help build the Firstenburg Tower. Linda is a strong advocate for the hospital in the community, and is Co-Chair of the Steppin’ Out Committee.

Bruce Bell, MD is a well-known, and now semi-retired, neurologist. He is especially interested in Alzheimer’s disease and has become involved in the Foundation’s exploratory efforts to develop a fundraising project around that issue.

Remy Eussen, DDS is a pediatric dentist, who has practiced at Southwest. He is especially interested in Foundation programs that benefit vulnerable patient populations.

Phil Janney is one of the leading estate planning attorneys in Vancouver, and is a shareholder with Landerholm, Memovich, Lansverk & Whitesides, PS. He is a member of the Foundation’s Planned Giving Committee.

Jim Martin serves as Chief Investment Officer for Vancouver’s M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust. Jim was named “2010 Small Foundation Manager of the Year” by Institutional Investor magazine. He recently joined our Finance Committee where his expertise will be put to great use.

PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center

Does PeaceHealth have a system-wide Foundation? No, each PeaceHealth hospital has its own 501(c)3 foundation. We will remain the same legal entity, with the only change being our name change to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center Foundation. PeaceHealth has a history of encouraging local autonomy for its seven foundations reaching from Ketchican, Alaska to Florence, Oregon.

What happens to the Board of Directors and the staff? Both the Board and the staff will remain in place. The Board will continue to govern the Foundation, to select and participate in fundraising projects, and to distribute unrestricted funds to high priority projects.

When I make a donation to the Foundation, can I be sure that my gift will go directly to this hospital? Yes, gifts donated to benefit PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center will support this hospital and remain in this community.

What are the advantages of affiliation for our Foundation?PeaceHealth offers several centralized services such as planned giving expertise, database coordination and grant writing assistance. These services will allow our staff to spend more time fundraising for projects that provide the highest quality healthcare for you, your family, and the community.

Led by co-chairs Rhonda Donohue and Tim Washburn, approximately 1,000 generous Southwest employees contributed or pledged more than $222,000 in support of our patients, programs and departments. The goal set by the Employee Giving Committee, made up of Southwest employees volunteering their time, was $200,000 from 700 employees.

"Regardless of the economic situation, Southwest employees and volunteers overwhelmingly expressed their commitment to our visions and mission through their generosity," said Washburn. "To me it validates why we all chose healthcare as a profession…to care for our patients, community, and each other by supporting our patients, facility, and each other."

"When the people closest to us step up in this way," said Southwest President and CEO Joe Kortum, "not only do they positively impact the things we're able to do for our patients, they also inspire other people outside our walls to give in support of exceptional medicine and extraordinary care. My hat is off in gratitude to the Committee and all our employee donors."
