The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has taken a leadership role in supporting the re-election of the lodging tax. As Board Chair, I am proud to stand with my colleagues on the Board of Directors who represent more than 1,000 Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce members — small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals who work together to

strengthen the economic climate of Teton County. President/CEO Jeff Golightly and I spent time this summer and fall meeting with community groups to share information about the lodging tax and its valuable role. We have both enjoyed our time getting to know more of our fellow residents.

A Letter from the Board ChairAnna Olson, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

As you know, the lodging tax is on the ballot this coming November 4. Town and county government received roughly $2 million of an estimated $5 million collection for fiscal year 2014/2015. Town and county save resources in the neighborhood of $400,000 to $500,000 per year by pushing some of their historic expenses away from their own budgets and onto the Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Boards’. Nearly half of the value of the entire tax (in revenue or savings) goes to support visitor impact expenses like START Bus, pathway maintenance, and trash collection. This allows visitors to pay for their own impacts. Without

the tax, these expenses would be have to be paid for by local taxes. So on November 4 please vote yes for the lodging tax. By doing so, visitors pay for their own seats on the bus and for their own trash collection. These funds have proven to be an incredible resource for our community. The following pages of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce newsletter highlight some of the benefits and services provided by the tax as well as groups, individuals, and families who support its re-approval.

We would like to invite everyone to learn more about the lodging tax by reading this newsletter and by taking a few moments to visit and like facebook.com/LodgingTax. Our team at the Chamber is greatly appreciative to those of you who have supported our efforts to educate and engage our membership and our entire community by making contributions to the PAC, Citizens for a Sustainable Community. DestiMetrics is the premier provider of lodging performance benchmarking tools to mountain resorts throughout the western United States and provides numbers specific to Jackson Hole. The DestiMetrics lodging barometer replaces the report which was compiled by Chamber staff for many years. The week-to-week estimate was useful and easy to read but the timeline was limited and it didn’t reference actual occupancy numbers. The DestiMetrics lodging barometer is published less often but the data is more accurate and more powerful. The sophisticated two-year look at reservations and actual occupancy provides a forecast of strengths and opportunities. The Chamber would like to recognize community partners, including the participating lodging properties, who have helped to make this tool available: Jackson Hole Central Reservations, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and JH AIR. Special recognition goes to the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Joint Powers Board for their support made possible by the lodging tax For more information, please visit www.jacksonholechamber.com/tourismforecast/.

So, occupancy would be about 91% on August 1 in 2014.

about the board of Directors

Scott Anderson completed his term as Board Chair on June 20. An active member of the business community in Jackson Hole, Scott led the Board of Directors with a unique combination of levity and an expectation of success.

His work to advocate for the interests of Jackson Hole businesses was accomplished locally with visits to the Chamber Administrative offices and attendance at networking events such as Chamber Mixers where he gained on-the-ground perspective. His work also took him across the Cowboy state with the Wyoming State Chamber of Commerce (formerly known as Wyoming Chamber Partnership) and to Washington DC where he serves as Vice Chairman of the

Telecommunications and E-Commerce Committee for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

President/CEO Jeff Golightly commented: “Scott was incredible at reaching out across the entire state of Wyoming.” Jeff continued, “His board membership on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has helped us to develop valuable ties while providing a better understanding of national business trends and best practices.”

Jim Waldrop, General Manager for the Wort Hotel, concluded his years of service to the Board of Directors on June 30.

During Jim’s years of service on the Executive Committee, including his term as Board Chair, the Chamber earned Four Star Accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, reached the 1,000 member milestone, and conducted a successful leadership transition.

Chamber President/CEO Jeff Golightly commented: “Jim led the Chamber during a time of transition. He was valuable to the staff and the membership because he was able to bring stability during what could have been a challenging time

for the Chamber.” Jeff continued, “Jim was so incredibly strategic. He really helped the Chamber to think years ahead rather than being focused on the day to day.”

Through his work with the Chamber, along with service to the Wyoming Lodging & Restaurant Association, Jackson Hole Airport Board, and Wyoming Tourism Board, Jim champions the interests of business in Jackson Hole while successfully managing the Wort Hotel. The landmark has been nationally acclaimed and recognized as the finest boutique lodging in Jackson Hole. The Wort has received extensive awards and media coverage, including notations as Best Small Historic Hotel in America, the Trip Advisor “Certificate of Excellence,” and the AAA Four-Diamond Award.

Chamber staff and alumni gathered on Town Square this summer to wish Sandra and Honoring Our Veterans continued success.

Thank You, sandra budak!

Director of Special Events Maureen Murphy was named as Citizen of the Month by the Jackson Hole Rotary Lunch Club this September. Maureen has been a member of the Chamber staff for six years and oversees events including Jackson Hole Winter Fest, Elk Fest, Old West Days, the Howdy Pardner Ambassador Club Fourth of July Parade, Jackson Hole Marathon, Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, and more. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has marked a number of sustainable business milestones. The Chamber achieved the third year Sustainable Tourism Education Program’s (STEP) Bronze certification through Sustainable Travel International, earned RRR Business Leaders recertification, and is scheduled to graduate from UnCommon Sense in November. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce was the first Chamber or Destination Marketing Organization in the world to become STEP-certified in 2012. This program recognizes the Chamber and others businesses for a commitment to sustainability and for demonstrating responsibility through best practices that address environmental, economic, and social impacts guided by the philosophy of the triple bottom line: people, planet, profit. Casey Stout, Executive Assistant and Program Coordinator, commented, “The Chamber is pleased to participate in programs that help build a better future through tourism.” She continued, “The international resources provided by the STEP framework have coordinated nicely with local hands-on training provided by UnCommon Sense.” UnCommon Sense is the two-year sustainable operations leadership program designed for businesses and organizations seeking to operate more efficiently, cost-effectively, and responsibly. Graduation is scheduled for Sunday, November 2 in Bozeman, Montana. For more information, visit http://www.jacksonholechamber.com/initiatives/sustainability.php.

The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee was pleased to present the Golden Spur to Tony Ligori of JAC Transportation for showing true western hospitality to a traveler who needed assistance. Tony was nominated by Carla, a mother from Tennessee, for taking care of her son, Brock, when he fell ill while on vacation. Carla said, “It really meant a lot to me and my husband that someone would be concerned and take the time to be so nice to him like that.” She continued, “I wanted to write this letter and thank him and the city of Jackson Hole for being so generous.” The story even has a happy ending. Carla said, “These boys had the time of their life. And I am sure will be back to visit you after they graduate from college.” She concluded, “I would like to give him a mama’s big thank you hug!” Nominations are now being accepted for the winter Golden Spur award.
