Kudos to Lenox TownshipLenox Township Residential recycling rates remain strong. For all the public education Waste Management provides to localschool children about the importance of recycling, it is a great thingwhen the adults in our young students’ lives are also practicing theprinciple…it supports what the students are learning in school…that reducing, reusing and recycling does matter.

This June, one of the manystudent groups that WasteManagement provided a tourfor were Annette Kinner’sGirl Scouts from Almont. TheScout leader said of the tour,“The girls LOVED IT and theparents, too. All last week(in June), we were at Day Camp. I encouraged other troopsto recycle. In fact I told another leader about how my girlsearned their Journey award and that we went to your landfill. They were impressed.”

Landfill tours have become a very popular educationalexperience. A trip to the landfill teaches students about theimportance of reducing, reusing and recycling. Each yearLeadership Macomb brings their adult business leadershipstudents on a tour of Pine Tree Acres, as part of the“Environmental Day” training that the program provides.Students from Macomb Community Colleges’ Earth Sciencesclasses also visit Pine Tree Acres each semester and areamazed at what they didn’t know about how their wasteis managed.

Birds, Bees & ButterfliesPine Tree Acres is very proud ofits newest sign at the site. Weare into our second year of ourWildlife Habitat Program andhere are just a few of thegreat photos captured byour employees at the site.

Employee Carrie Belkiewicz snapped this photo of a Cecropia Mothwith her cell phone…little did she know what a fabulous and specialmoth this is!

The Cecropia Moth (Hyalophoracecropia) is North America’s largestnative moth. It is a member of theSaturniidae family, or giant silkmoths. Females with a wingspanof 4 to 6 inches have beendocumented (note size of the

moth against the wood siding and floor plank). It is found as farwest as the Rocky Mountains and north into the maritimeprovinces of Canada.

And this little fellow provides proofthat adultdeer will sleepaway fromtheir fawnsbecause theadult has a

scent that might attract a predator andput the fawn at risk. Mom wasn’t very faraway, just far enough not to endanger thefawn but close enough to keep an eye on her young one.
