Stone is washed before bagging but

usually requires further washing to

reveal its full natural colours. When

used for a path or driveway or on a

garden bed, rainfall will normally

achieve this. For indoor use and when

ever an immediate decorative impact

is desired, we recommend rewashing

before laying in position.

S T E P 1 . Use the table below to find the paver that is recommended for your particular need.

T I P 1 . Select pavers that match internal floor coverings to ensure the transition from indoor-out is subtle and blends with your decoration style.

THIS METHOD WILL HELP OVERCOME PROBLEMS SUCH AS ANTS, WEEDS, SINKING, AND SEPARATING

T H I S M E T H O D I S F O R P E D E S T R I A N A R E A U S E O N LY

S T E P 1 .Digout topsoil to 120mm. Install base course (preferably gap 7/crusher dust - not sand) and rake out.

S T E P 2 .Compact base course to 60mm thick using feet or preferably plate compactor.

S T E P 3 .Check levels with tape measure. Your base course should be approx 60mm below the finished level of your paving.

S T E P 4 .Check levels with spirit level.

S T E P 6 .Trowel 5 spots of PREMIER-MORTAR-MIX onto base course. Then lay a strip of mortar where the next joint will be.

S T E P 5 .Mix PREMIER-MORTAR-MIX with water to toothpaste consistency (in a wheelbarrow or mixer).

S T E P 8 .Gently tap paver down to desired level with rubber mallet. Joints should be approx 10mm wide at top of paver.

DO NOT BUTT HARD TOGETHER.

S T E P 7 .Gently lay the paver onto the spots (the mortar should squash down and spread out to 20mm thick. Use a sponge to wet the back of each paver before you lay.

S T E P 1 3 .Leave grout to cure for 24 hours before walking on.

S T E P 1 4 .Use PREMIER-SEAL to maintain a ‘just laid look’. This will help prevent fading, staining and efflorescence).

PAVERS MUST BE TOTALLY DRY BEFORE SEALING.

S T E P 9 .Check levels across pavers continuously and tap down if needed.

S T E P 1 0 .You should end up with approx 40mm paver, 20mm mortar, 60mm base. When all pavers are laid - DO NOT WALK ON FOR 24 HOURS.

S T E P 1 1 .When pavers are totally dry - brush in PREMIER-SWEEP-IN-GROUT with soft broom *Use PREMIER-ACID-WASH to clean pavers before grouting.

S T E P 1 2 .Spray fine mist of water over paving to soak into grout.

DO NOT USE TOO MUCH WATER.

S T E P 1 .

For light pedestrian use on well consolidated ground, excavate the depth of the pavers plus 50mm for the sand layer. For heavy garden equipment, vehicle traffic, hard standing or poor ground – a sub base of 150 – 200mm depth is required. The sub base should be well compacted and consist of small granular stone and fine material (not larger than 25mm). Provide a fall of 10 – 15mm over every 1 metre to allow for water runoff. The falls should be away from the house or walls unless linear surface drainage channels are used. Building regulations require paving to be a minimum height below the floor level. Check your local building regulations for this information.

S T E P 2 .

Any area of pavers must be surrounded by a firm edge restraint to stop the blocks and sand from moving sideways. New and existing walls, kerbs or the pavers themselves laid on a suitable concrete bed can all be used to serve this purpose. Any concrete used to fix edge restraints must be allowed time to cure and gain strength before any vibration is commenced.

S T E P 3 .

After sub base excavation and fill (if required) screed out paving sand on top of the suitable sub base within the restrained area to an approximate depth of 65mm. Then compact with a plate compactor (obtained from you local hire shop). Add the remainder of the sand, then screed off to give a firmly compacted thickness of 50mm. One tonne of sand covers approximately 8m2.

S T E P 4 .

Individual pavers are then simply placed onto the sand bed and according to the pattern, laying progresses from a corner or long edge and should proceed along one laying face until work is finalised. Blocks from several packs should be well mixed to enhance colour blending.

S T E P 5 .

Cutting of blocks may be required to fill gaps between edge restraints. This may be done using a hammer and bolster chisel. If a lot of cutting is necessary, a mechanical block splitter or power cutter can be hired.

S T E P 6 .

With a stiff broom, thoroughly brush PREMIER-SWEEP-IN-GROUT over the pavers to fill the joints before compacting. For smaller areas use a rubber mallet to compact. For larger areas use a plate compactor. Carpet may be required when compacting these pavers to help prevent them from cracking. Keep sweeping PREMIER-SWEEP-IN-GROUT in until all joints are topped up.

To maintain a just laid look, you can seal your pavers using either PREMIER-SEAL product of your choice. See page 23 for more information. Talk to your local Premier Pavers distributor about PREMIER-SEAL for your pavers. Unsealed paving will weather naturally making colours appear less intense.

S T E P 1 . SITE PREPARATION AND EXCAVATION

Dig out the area behind where your wall will go to

allow for drainage and back fill. Then dig a trench

500mm wide and 200mm deep along the line of your

walls planned base.

S T E P 2 . PREPARE A LEVEL BASE

Compact the soil in the base of your trench. Then

fill trench with GAP 7 or similar and compact evenly.

Check with a string line and spirit level to ensure your

wall will be built on a solid, level base.

S T E P 3 . INSTALL THE FIRST LAYER

You must ensure the first layer is perfectly level.

Place the drystone blocks onto the base and tap with

rubber mallet. As you lay the first layer – check that it

is level from side to side and back to back. Check the

back of the first layer with string line. On a sloping

site, step the trench in 100mm increments to ensure

blocks remain level. Always start laying your wall from

the lowest point and work uphill.

S T E P 4 . DRAINAGE

If your wall is going to be 3 layers or more high, then

place a “punched”drainage coil behind the first layer

of blocks. Extend the coil away from the wall and

connect to the nearest silt trap. Cover the coil with

drainage aggregate.

STEP 5. STACKING AND BACKFILLING

Brush the first course clean and place the second

course in a stretcher bond pattern. Ensure the nibs of

the upper block engages with the back of the bottom

block to prevent movement. As each layer is finished,

place drainage aggregate and backfill behind the wall

and compact the back fill every 2 courses. Continue

until finished height is achieved. Then place DryStone

caps on the wall to finish off. (These can be glued

down with construction adhesive if you desire)

6. Lay second layer, continue laying and check levels

G E N E R A L C A R ESweep regularly with a stiff bristled broom to keep free from debris. For maximum protection we suggest pavers are sealed after installation with a PREMIER-SEALER. During construction, cover the paved areas to protect against damage.

Protect your pavers against possible staining from mortar, oxides, cement and rust. Do not use high pressure cleaning apparatus to clean pavers. In all cases, attempt to clean a stain before it hardens or dries.

If a stain occurs, follow some simple steps: assess type of stain carefully before taking action (incorrect assessment of stain can cause the stain to be more difficult to remove). If the stain cannot be accurately assessed, conduct a trial process on a small portion of stained area to determine most appropriate action.

All dimensions given are nominal and subject to manufacturing tolerances. The quoted dimensions of our paving ranges are those normally attained when the slabs are arranged correctly spaced, i.e sizes are given inclusive of joints, which are typically 10mm. This policy enables you to simply plan the area covered and quantities required for your project without having to calculate a separate allowance for joint widths. Avoiding the complication of joint measurements is particularly helpful when planning random layouts. If precise dimensions are crucial, confirm the actual sizes and tolerances by measuring several samples of the product at your local stockist. P R O D U C T C O L O U R VA R I AT I O NTonal and colour variations are evident in all Premier concrete products and whilst the colours reproduced in this brochure are as accurate as photographic and printing processes allow it is essential that your choice is made from actual materials at your local stockist. Manufactured products are reconstituted stone utilising naturally occurring aggregates, therefore no guarantee can be given that paving manufactured at different times will be identical in colour shade. When using several packs, product from all the packs should be blended throughout the project to produce an acceptable overall natural appearance.

W E AT H E R I N GIt should be appreciated that with all products, natural curing, weathering and site conditions can cause shade variation to appear across the surface of individual paving units. This does not in any way affect the performance of the paving and any such variation will diminish over a period of time as the paving matures. Both natural stone and concrete products are affected by the action of sunlight and rainfall over time.

P O I N T I N GFOR ITALIA RANGE ONLY

We recommend that PREMIER-SWEEP-IN-GROUT is used to fill pavings joints and should be completed within a few days of laying. This will provide a more permanent finish and ensure maximum surface drainage. It should be recognised that poor drainage (which includes the sub-base design) may result in water retention which can affect the weathering characteristics of a paved area.

E F F L O R E S C E N C EWe cannot take responsibility for the phenomenon of efflorescence which may occur in the form of a deposit and/or apparent colour fading in the form of patches or drip staining. This occasional and naturally occurring phenomenon is inherent in all concrete products with a high cement content and is beyond our control. It sometimes occurs when prolonged wet weather is followed by conditions of rapid drying. However it is in no way detrimental to the durability of the product and gradually disappears as natural weathering takes place.

C L E A N I N G A N D M A I N T E N A N C EPressure washers and chemical cleaners are not recommended for use on our paving and Premier Group NZ takes no responsibility for any damage caused by their application. We recommend thoroughly wetting the paved area with luke warm soapy water, then brushing off with a stiff yard broom.

H E A LT H A N D S A F E T YMixing Mortar: Dry or damp cement and wet concrete/mortar can cause irritation and burns to eyes and skin. Suitable eye protection and PVC gloves should be worn when handling these materials. If contact with the skin does occur, wash off with plenty of water. If contact with eyes occurs, irrigate with plenty of water. If irritation/burning persists, seek immediate medical attention.

Cutting: The cutting of concrete, clay and stone products with high speed cutters produces dust. Inhalation of excessive amounts of dust over a long period of time may cause long-term health effects. Suitable eye protection (safety goggles) and respiratory protection (dust mask) should be used when cutting.

Manual Handling: Most of our products are heavy. Some are very heavy. Appropriate handling precautions include wearing protective gloves and footwear and obtaining assistance when moving items weighing over 20kg.
