1) The Reading of Megillat Esther – Every word of the Megillah must be read and heard by those present. The commandment applies equally to men and women because the “entire” people were under the threat of annihilation and thus deserve to celebrate the victory. Children, too, are strongly encouraged to listen to the entire Megillah reading.

2) Mishloach Manot – The exchanging of gifts of food is based on chapter 9:19: “…a holiday and an occasion for sending gifts to one another.” This obligation displays communal solidarity and creates a bond of friendship between fellow Jews.

3) Matanot Le’evyonim – The obligation of gifts to the poor on Purim is based on chapter 9:22: “…an occasion for sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor.” According

to Jewish law, it is necessary to give these gifts to at least two people.

4) Seudat Purim – The festive meal is also based on 9:22: “The same days on which

the Jews enjoyed relief from their foes and the same month which had been transformed for

them from one of grief and mourning to one of festive joy, they were to observe them as days of feasting and merrymaking…” Inviting the less fortunate to one’s festive meal is of primary importance.

Mishloach ManotFor Purim, Beth Emeth is pleased to offer a special card to be given in lieu of

Mishloach Manot. Proceeds of this effort support our

Dear Congregational Family,

How many cups of wine do you drink at the Passover Seder? Most of us consume four cups based on the four terms of deliverance promised by God to the Jewish people in Exodus chapter 6: “I will FREE you from the labors . . . and DELIVER you from their bondage. I will REDEEM you . . . and I will TAKE you to be my people.” The four active verbs, which all relate to different aspects of God’s promise of redemption, form the basis for the four cups of wine at the Seder.

However, all of us also fill a fifth cup, but we leave it unconsumed by those sitting around the table. The cup of Elijah is filled because of an ambiguity in the Torah text. Soon after we read the four verbs of redemption, the Torah states, “I will BRING you into the land...” A fifth cup is

filled, and we leave it to Elijah the prophet to decide if there should have been four or five cups at the

Seder.

Nevertheless, a minority view from yesteryear ho lds the position that there should be five real cups of wine consumed at the Seder, and there

should be no ambivalence about it. In fact, the contemporary Haggadot put out by the Hartman

Institute as well as the familiar Silverman Haggadah allow as an option the drinking of a fifth cup, based on

the traditional minority view, in honour of the State of Israel. We have in fact been brought into the land. The Biblical aspiration is a reality in contemporary Jewish life. I for one, with a son serving in the Israel Defense Forces, believe in reciting blessings over five cups of wine, in addition to a reserved cup for Elijah, whose role it is to herald in the Messianic era.

This year, the celebration of Pesach takes place just a few weeks before the commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of the modern State of Israel. Some of us are privileged to remember the spring of 1948 and, God willing, all of us will witness seven decades of a living breathing miracle we call Israel.

Rabbi Philip Scheim, the spiritual leader of Beth David, and I invite you to join us for the second Seder this year at Beth Emeth, when we will celebrate the second Seder in the context of Israel’s seventieth.

rabbi leslie lipson “biG Wheel TurninG bY The Grace oF God” (roberT hunTer & jerrY Garcia)

As we begin to emerge from our winter hibernation, it seems we become acutely aware of the miracle of “spring time”. We sense nature’s re-birth, and with that the miracle of life. Judaism has a subtle way of understanding miracles. Miracles are an expression of an inverse relationship of our awareness of God’s presence. That is to say, a miracle is not about whether God is present or not. A miracle is an expression of our perception of God’s lack of presence. As confusing as it may seem, the holiday of Purim and Festival of Pesach provide excellent examples of the Talmudic Sages understanding of miracles. One holiday occurs towards the end of winter when we yearn for a hint of God’s presence after a long winter hibernation. One festival occurrs as spring has started and we sense God’s presence manifest in the awakening of green grass, leaves on trees, and the warming of this hemisphere. When we sense God’s presence and wonderful extraordinary things happen, we don’t thank God for miracles. Instead we praise God for being present and involved. When we don’t sense God in our lives and something extraordinary happens, we acknowledge a miracle. On Purim, God seems hidden and therefore Purim is a holiday of miracles. On Pesach, God is explicitly mentioned and quoted; therefore Pesach is not a holiday of miracles. Yet on Pesach, God deserves our praise and our thanks.

Purim is particular in nature, fundamentally designed for the Jewish people. On Purim, the Persian Jews are saved and the bad guys are killed. In our observance of the day, we don’t do anything that diminishes our joy. We certainly don’t engage in any ritual that expresses our sorrow that the bad guys were killed. We don’t indicate our sorrow over the death of Haman, his sons or his followers. Rather we celebrate it. Despite no explicit mention of God’s name or God’s presence in Megillat Esther; we attribute Persian Jewry’s redemption from evil as a miracle. Before we read the Megillah on the night of Purim we recite the blessing: Sh’Asa Nisim L’Avoteinu BaYamim Ha’Heim Bazman HaZeh – Praised are you O’ Lord our G-d, King of the Universe Who brought miracles to our forefathers in those days in that season. When we pray Maariv, Shacharit and Mincha (Evening, Morning and Afternoon services) during the Amidah (Shmoneh Esrei) we include the section entitled Al HaNisim. Clearly the indication is that Purim is considered to be a miracle and we attribute all miracles to God.

On the other hand, Pesach is universal in nature and designed for the entire world. Pesach celebrates the universal message of human freedom and liberty. The message for Pesach is not only for the Jewish people; it is a message for all people and it is celebrated as such. Hence, the Haggadah tells us to U’Kratem Dror B’Aretz L’Chol Yoshveha “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land for all its inhabitants” (Lev. 25:10). Pesach can be understood as an opportunity for God to reveal God’s self to more than just the Jewish people. God wanted to make his presence known to Pharaoh and Egypt. The Ten Plagues were the way in which Egypt would recognize God. In the Torah the plagues are referred to as Otot u’Moftim signs and wonders. This wasn’t about God in the Particular sense; this was about God in the Universal sense. God wanted Pharaoh to acknowledge God’s presence as much as he wanted to Jewish people to acknowledge his presence. Yes, the

B’nai Yisroel was saved, and “bad guys” were killed, or in this case swallowed up as they entered the Reed Sea. Despite our joy at being saved and the sea drowning the Egyptian pursuers, we don’t partake of a full measure of joy. We diminish our joy because some of God’s creation was destroyed in order for us to be saved. We take ten drops of wine out of our 2nd cup of wine. Clearly God is explicitly present in the text. God is present in the Torah text and God is certainly present in the Haggadah. The Talmudic Sages, in writing the Haggadah, purposefully made God’s presence central to the narrative of the Passover story. They even removed Moses’ name just so that we would get the message that the entire story hinged upon God’s covenant with our forefathers and love for B’nai Yisroel. However, this wasn’t just about God helping the Jewish people, this was about God as part of the world and part of nature. When we are able to sense God in nature and as a constant force in our lives, then it doesn’t seem necessary to acknowledge miracles. Rather, we offer praise since praise reflects an acknowledgment of the constancy and involvement. We make no reference to miracles. We don’t make a blessing suggesting any type of miracle prior to reading the Haggadah. Rather we only offer praise. We don’t recite Al HaNisim. Instead we say Hallel. We say Hallel on both Seder nights and we say Hallel every morning of Pesach.

The role that God plays in our lives will determine whether we thank God for a miracle or praise God for being an explicit presence in our lives. When we don’t sense God in our lives and something extraordinary seemingly occurs, we tend to think of it as a miracle. Such is the case with Purim. When we sense God’s explicit presence in our lives, we praise and offer thanks. Such is the case with Pesach. Miracles are inherently subjective for that very reason. God’s presence in our own individual lives is inherently personal and subjective. Therefore, one person’s miracle is another persons’ rational explanation. Purim reminds us that there are times when we will feel that God’s presence is hidden or removed from our lives. So we say Al HaNisim in order to acknowledge the extraordinary occurrence. Pesach reminds us that God is intimately involved in our welfare well-being. So we say Hallel in order to offer our praise and our gratitude for God’s presence and involvement. It is not so much different in how we treat our families. When we are present in our family’s lives and our loved ones are present in our lives, we deserve to be praised and to offer praise. When we are not present in our family’s life or our loved ones are not present in our lives, it is miraculous when a family comes together for a life cycle event.

allan m. snow presidenT’s messaGe

Our community is defined by the leaders who pour their hearts and souls into Beth Emeth. My goal as president is to empower you to join the ranks of these leaders in order to continue moulding this Synagogue into a second home for our ever-growing family. Both the Jewish calendar and the Torah have much wisdom to offer in our daily lives. We go through the same cycle of reading Torah and celebrating holidays each year, yet each year we are able to extract new teachings based on our individual and collective needs at the time. This year is no different, and I hope that we as a synagogue community will be inspired together by the great leaders of Purim and Passover to step forward and say, Hineni, here I am.

Purim is a celebratory time here at Beth Emeth. Our Beth Emeth players are preparing the production of “Grease–The Megillah”. Their talent over the years has demonstrated how lucky we are to have them - so many volunteers, giving so much of their time and impressing us with so much of their talent. With the Purim Spiel and the Young Families’ Purim Carnival, Beth Emeth will fill your calendar with fun for the whole family.

We can also look past the hamentaschen, plays and parties to learn some valuable lessons from Esther, the heroine of the story. With the evil Haman plotting the death of the Jews it was a natural response for her to shy away from responsibility. Esther’s cousin Mordechai was there to give her a little nudge by saying to her, “Perhaps you were put in this position of royalty for exactly this reason?” It is easy in 2018 to opt out of our responsibilities to our world. Our initial reactions are to say “I’m not the right person” or “somebody else will take care of it”. Esther learned from Mordechai and chose to leap forward into her leadership role to save her people. May we all be inspired this year to leap into new challenges.

From Purim our calendar moves swiftly into Passover. These 8 days are a time of remembering the slavery of the Jewish people and their exodus from Egypt. The story of Passover is retold year

after year at our Seders. As we retell the story this year, let us be inspired and motivated by the leadership of Moses. Like Esther, Moses was not sure that he was up for the challenge and initially questioned God’s decision saying “Who am I to lead the people out of Egypt?” He was afraid that he lacked the skills and charisma required of a great leader. Despite his hesitation, we must simply read the Passover story to see how Moses profoundly modeled true leadership.

During Pesach this year, for the first time, Beth Emeth will be hosting a community seder jointly led by Rabbi Morrison and Rabbi Scheim of Beth David Synagogue. In addition, we are resuming the tradition of offering an entertainment evening during Chol Hamoed Passover. Watch your e-blasts and Shabbat bulletins for more details as they become available.

Beth Emeth strives to be a space where there is something for everyone. I

urge you to contact me with any suggestions of how

to best serve your individual needs. Our community can learn a lot from Esther, Moses, and countless other role models. My blessing is that we are all

motivated by these stories and that we feel empowered to take action for what we believe in.

I wish you all Chag Purim Sameach and Chag Pesach Kasher V’Sameach. May you all have a joyous Purim and Passover and may you continue to be inspired by the stories and values of our tradition.

steven greenwood boardroom banTer

At times I marvel at how fast time flies by. It seems that the Chanukah Kesher just went out and now I received notice that it is time to submit my “Boardroom Banter” for the upcoming Purim/Pesach Kesher.

As we enter this special celebratory season of both Purim and Passover I wanted to continue on the course I started on, with my first “Boardroom Banter”. Looking towards the upcoming holidays and seeing if I could relate lessons that I have learned about Purim & Pesach to the message I want to deliver.

Both holidays remind us of our human frailty and vulnerability yet at the same time assure us that G-D’s covenant is everlasting. We understand that we must not be silent in the presence of evil but confront and eliminate it by putting into effect the messages these two holidays teach us.

There are 4 special mitzvahs that are part of the Purim festivities.

Hear the whole Megillah in the synagogue, give to the needy, send food gifts to friends and feast.

Passover coveys 5 major concepts within the holiday. The importance of memory, the importance of optimism, the importance of faith, the importance of family and finally the importance of responsibility to others.Within both holidays I observed that the overriding themes are our relationship with our families, our synagogue and our community at large.

We are very fortunate to have dedicated members who are serving on the Board of Directors as well as those who volunteer to work on many of the committees that have been established to provide programs and services to the Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda community.Their tireless efforts, have enriched our souls with music, entertainment and educational programs; developed and offered family based programs such as the Family Shabbat, Chanukah Carnival, the upcoming Purim Spiel and our annual Purim Carnival; providing meals, help and assistance to others through the Chanukah food drive and the Out of the Cold program and we continue to address the education of our children through the youth programs offered and the Alpeh Beit Chadash School. Our dedicated volunteers and professional staff work hard to ensure that we have a well-run welcoming synagogue to provide our membership a strong sense of community. Through their dedication I can see how we at the Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda fulfill the mitzvahs of Purim and address the concepts of Passover.

I encourage our membership to find a committee that interests and motivates you to get involved. It is a very rewarding experience.

Finally, on behalf of my wife Lori and my family I would like to wish everyone Chag Sameach.

Inspiration comes from many sources. Facebook and other forms of social media are replete with inspirational postings. Innumerable websites and self-help books abound on the internet and bookstore shelves. I personally enjoy reading these messages and like to share them. Anyone who has been in my office will have seen sayings on my office wall. Why mention this at all? Every few months, when it comes time to write my article for the Kesher, I am always looking for inspiration to help me think of what to write. Frankly, I can easily update you on the many elements of corporate, regulatory and infrastructure initiatives and improvements which are managed and addressed every day. All of these matters are indeed critically important to ensuring that our synagogue is being managed well and as a result are on the daily agendas of the professional personnel and the Board.

So, rather than write about that, I have decided to share with you where I draw my inspiration in my day-to-day work at the synagogue. Simply stated, it comes from the pure goodness and good-heartedness of people that I meet in the synagogue every day. I am inspired by our many volunteers who bring their hearts and souls to their work at the synagogue. We have more volunteers than I can count who spend hours and sometimes days in our synagogue bringing their creativity, energy and expertise to enable us to offer activities such as Out of the Cold, the Aleph Beit Chadash school, Food for Thought (workshops helping seniors learn about the risks of financial abuse), concerts, speaker and music programs, theatre trips, weekly seniors programs, children and young family programs and much more. Without these volunteers, these activities would simply not be possible. Thank you!

I am inspired by the incredible generosity of our members who voluntarily, willingly and altruistically support the Synagogue. We are so grateful to those who donate to the Synagogue to sponsor

program and congregational activities, to underwrite the cost of acquiring precious ritual treasures, books and articles and, to fund major infrastructure improvements which will enable the synagogue to better serve our congregation and our community. For all of our sponsors and supporters who come forward to offer and who respond when asked — we are blessed and inspired by your generosity and goodness.

And — I am inspired by so many of our members who have chosen Beth Emeth as their spiritual home. I have been honoured in my ten years as Executive Director, to be able to listen to our members’ inspirational stories — stories of survival, of challenges and successes, of love and dedication, of disappointments and of bouncing back. To all of our members, thank you for your enduring commitment.

The stories of Purim and Pesach are also deeply infused with inspiration, where courage, overcoming personal challenges, making decisions, taking action, doing what is right — all based on the commitment to God and the Jewish people, are legendary. Let us all be inspired by the beauty and goodness that surround us.On behalf of the professional team at Beth Emeth and on behalf of my family, I wish you all — Chag Purim Sameach and Chag Pesach Kasher v’Sameach.

Many members of our Congregation have routinely been asking me ‘What is it like to be the freshman amongst our group of past presidents?’ In fact, they follow up also by asking ‘How does the group of past presidents get along?’ I gave these two good questions some reflection, and offer the following thoughts.

None of us ‘past presidents’ feels the need to downplay our differences of opinions; on the contrary, in a certain sense we can be proud of our differences, because they arise out of goodwill itself; for love of our Beth Emeth – including Canada and Israel, for concerns of the challenges of our times, for respect for and even outright enjoyment of the democratic process we have within our Congregation. Frank debate and a multitude of opinions have always been a tradition of this Synagogue, and I think for the better. Today the test of our differences attests to the strength of those who served as our Presidents over the years. I can think of no other Synagogue where Past Presidents can disagree so widely yet come together in mutual respect. I can pay the Past Presidents no higher honour than simply saying this, ‘You gave of yourself to this Synagogue, gracing the Synagogue with your passion and intellect, and commitment’. For these reasons, I am proud to connect the dots in the golden chain — Goldene Keyt. Further, they say you can’t go back again … They are wrong! While old soldiers just may fade away, ex-Synagogue presidents keep responding to one more curtain call. For this encore curtain call, I specifically want to acknowledge a few of our Past Presidents who have returned this year for active duty! Eric Goldberg – Board

Member and Co-Chair Ritual Committee, Stephen Werger – Treasurer, Harry Turk and Bernie Schwartz Va’ad representatives to the Board of Directors. I might also add the extraordinary efforts of two of our Honoured Members of the Va’ad for their service to the Congregation on many numerous committees: Michael Sugarman and Al Mervin.

The Va’ad continues to meet quarterly with a robust agenda and spirited discussion. I look forward to continuing on as the ‘new kid on the block’ - the ‘Freshman’ and build on the legacy as to who we are, going from ‘Strength to Strength’. Beth Emeth strong!

My entire family joins with me and my Va’ad colleagues in wishing everyone a Chag Purim & Chag Peseach Kasher V’Sameach!.

Warmly,Michael Shawn KerznerImmediate Past PresidentChair – Va’ad.

We are entering the second quarter of this new year and the music has been playing for all to enjoy. Over the months since the last Kesher article we have presented the Trio Mosaic Jazz Ensemble and Erez Sussman and friends performing original works and arrangements that reflect the sounds heard around the world. Our Music After Dark Series has become very popular and the size of the crowds is growing. We have decided to carry on this series which we developed only this past year. If you are aware of any group or individual who would like to perform for us at Beth Emeth please feel free to contact us through the office and will pursue them further.

We invite you to join us for one or both performances of the Purim Play, Grease- The Megillah. Past experience tells us that our wonderful Beth Emeth Players will shine once again. The Purim Megillah will be brought to life by Greasers and Pink Ladies as the true heroines of Jewish history. The preparatory time was short this year but our players eagerly crafted an original version of the Megillah which promises to be entertaining and unforgettable.

We are anxiously looking forward to this year’s production. Yasher Koach to Albert Han who took over the reins to produce this performance, and to all of our Players who put in a lot of hours and personal effort to ensure another wonderful play. Keep up the good work.

As we look towards the end of our year in May the Music

Committee is planning a Shabbatini on May

25th. In what has become an annual program, Cantor Guber will lead a Friday night Shabbat service.

Come and join us in this family oriented musical service that heralds the

beginning of Shabbat. A martini bar and delicious food will be served to help start the evening. We look forward

to having everyone be a part of this wonderful event.

The Committee is always discussing new ideas and ways to bring more music into Beth Emeth. We want to extend an invitation to each and every one of you to join us as we present our musical selections. Check the Bulletin on a regular basis and watch for our posters and flyers when we promote our events and programs. Our success would not be possible if not for the ideas and connections you provide us on a regular basis. We want to know about those people and groups you know which will enhance the overall program schedule. Let us know what you like, who you know and when you want to hear it. These are all important parts that will improve our collective music journey on a regular basis. See you at Beth Emeth.

Czech Torah Scroll Project We acknowledge with deep appreciation, the generous support of Clement Cohen and family, which enabled Beth Emeth to acquire this precious Torah Scroll. The Torah Scroll, deemed to be approximately 300 years old, is part of the Czech Scrolls that survived the Holocaust. “The Czech Scrolls are a reminder of a community now destroyed, a moving testimony to Jewish resistance, and a remarkable tribute to the Jewish ability to revive and regenerate.” - (Memorial Torah Scrolls publication)

Our Scroll was removed from a collection of Torah Scrolls in Prague Czechoslovakia circa 1963 and given as a gift to a community leader who immigrated to Canada. This Torah Scroll, along with 1600 others, was originally confiscated by the Nazi regime during World War II.

We look forward to engaging our Beth Emeth community in the renewal and regeneration of this part of our past. Watch for details on how you will be able to play a role in the revival of this precious legacy.

Shalom Everyone,

The past few months our participants enjoyed wonderful programs and outdid themselves with their first performance of the Kadima Choir at our Chanukah party. The choir is a new initiative that promotes Jewish learning and working with others. We will continue our path of learning and fun with the celebration of Shabbat and a special Shabbat Dinner Cooking program along with a wonderful “Challa Cover’ Art project with the Pomegranate Guild. For Tu B’shvat we joined the congregation for ‘The Mitzvah Day Program’ and then learned all about the holiday with our own Tu B’shvat Seder.

Our participants are really looking forward to our Purim party and another performance of the Kadima Choir followed by learning all about Passover and preparing for our annual Model Seder.

Please come and experience the joy and enthusiasm for yourself by volunteering or sponsoring a program for the Kadima Centre.

“Building for the future on the foundations of our past” is a component of Beth Emeth’s Mission Statement.

In every generation, we are challenged but continue resiliently; to thrive and to build for the future while adhering to our Jewish traditions and celebrations such as Purim

and Pesach. “The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.”

stated Richard Louv in his book The Nature Principle.

Resiliently, we have weathered winter and the drastic weather

impacts resulting from Climate Change. Along with nature, we feel

rebirth, renewal and a reawakening at Purim and Pesach, liberated into spring

while rejoicing in our resilience through our customs to overcome our past potential for slaughter at Purim and our slavery and progression to freedom during Pesach.

As plants and trees begin to blossom and grow, the spiritual and biological are intertwined.

Advances in health care and individual resilience have created questions and challenges unique to this century and to the end of life.

Please join Continuing Education and the Greening Committee for their joint program:

With today’s instability including drastic weather changes resulting from climate change, there is increased potential for severe weather events to cause wide-spread disasters or disasters to occur because of a power disruption, nuclear power plant blast, chemical or biological weapon, cyber attack or explosion.

Building on the future, Beth Emeth, respected and renowned as a Community Hub that embraces and fosters a full & joyous way of life is relevant in galvanizing and guiding communities towards environmental protection, resilience and emergency preparedness.

In fact, with Councillor Pasternak’s endorsement, the Ward 10 Round-table was founded after the 2013 Ice Storm. This Round-table consists of environmental representatives and advocates within Beth Emeth and diverse community and inter-faith organizations focused on assisting us to individually prepare for Emergency Preparedness while collaborating with government agencies.

Mel and I wish you and your family a freylach Purim and a liberating Pesach.

Call the office or register on-line for your seat at these exciting programs.

With the closing of 2017, our Brotherhood has been front and centre in our Synagogue. Programs such as Steak in the Sukkah, Simchat Torah and most of all, the Rosh Hashanah Kiddush were very successful and had great turnouts. Join us for our Monthly Dinner Meetings, on the third Wednesday of each month. As well, we have Scotch, Bourbon & Beer Tastings on tap (pun intended) dates TBA. The Sunnybrook Shabbat takes place on February 24th, Brotherhood Shabbat on March 17th and we will be honouring those who perished during the Holocaust. Date TBA.

We are looking for more than a few good men to help with programming for the Brotherhood. If you are interested in

becoming part of the planning committee, please let us know.

The Chanukah Toy Drive started in September 2017 with contacting all the companies that have generously donated to me for the past 13 years, and, as always, the companies were so happy to jump on board once again and donate and support this very worthy cause.

This year BEBY collected more than $1,500.00 in cash donations. With this money I purchased Walmart gift cards which were given out to the teenagers as Chanukah gifts, (this is very much appreciated by them). The collection of toys this year was not as large as last year, but that’s ok, we had toy donations from outside companies that gave us a great selection of toys for the kiddies.

Working with Chai Lifeline Canada is such a pleasure! They are so supportive of Beth Emeth’s Toy Drive and they are wonderful to work with. They had volunteers that helped pick up large box donations from many companies and deliver them directly to Chai Lifeline. This was a big help to me. My daughter Shaina and I worked for many hours at Chai Lifeline sorting and organizing the toys collected.

I am so grateful from the support from BEBY and families and for the following companies who have supported the Toy Drive for many years: Mastermind Toys, Dr. Flea, Spin Master, Ganz, Gertex (Eye Candy), Dr. David Morrow, Associated Hebrew

Schools (Danilack & Kamin Campus), CanRan Beauty Ltd., Magen Boys Entertainment, Uptown Chabad & Gan Yeladim Pre-School, Temple Sinai Pre-School, Issie and Limore Ellis and DANI. Thank you to a new company The Batner Bookstore for donating a very large variety of books for the teens.

A BIG thank you to Beth Emeth synagogue office staff and security staff for allowing me to continue

doing the Chanukah Toy Drive each year in memory of my dear parents.

If you know of a company that would like to donate to the Chanukah Toy Drive, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will personally contact the company for the donation. During the year, when you are thinking of making a donation in honour or in memory of a loved one you can direct that money to the Chanukah Toy Drive.

Wishing you and your families a very Happy Purim and Happy Passover holiday.

the marty keshen chesed commiTTee

In the Rosh Hashanah Kesher, I wrote to you all that my position as Chesed Chair for the past three years was finished. Well I’m back but only until we find someone to fill my shoes.

We are in real need for someone to step forward and take on this wonderful volunteer role as being the Chesed Chair and working alongside the wonderful and kind Marlene White.

Being on the Chesed Committee allowed me to meet many wonderful Beth Emeth families at a time of need and support, during their shiva. It also allowed me to make Chesed calls to shut- ins or members who are convalescing and really get to know our members one to one and be that listening friend.

There must be someone out there who can spare some time (day/evening) and commit to doing this huge mitzvah!! Marlene and I split up all the shiva visits. Marlene does north of Steeles and I do south of Steeles, which worked well for us. I also send out shiva

cards to all the families who have lost a loved one and a get well card to those recovering from surgery or illness.

If you want to call/email me and ask me any questions regarding this volunteer role, I am more than happy to help.

From my family to yours, wishing you all a Happy Purim and a Happy Passover!

Our Out Of The Cold Program has just completed another successful year of service. For 8 weeks, a large group of tireless volunteers provided, food, shelter, clothing, and toiletries to members of the community who are homeless or socially isolated. Our program is the huge success that it is because of the large number of volunteers who help out “behind the scenes” as well as on the days the guests come to our Synagogue. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out this year, there are far too many to name, for your dedication and support. The guests appreciate all that we do to make their day a little brighter.

Special thanks to our donors for their very generous contributions to this year’s program: Uptown Gourmet, Mazon Canada, Costco (Wilson Ave.), Brands International Corporation Inc., McGregor American Essentials, Just Socks Partner Charity, Scholastic Canada Ltd., Trimfit Co. Ltd, TD Bank, Manulife, Stonemill Bakehouse, Simply Protein/Wellness Foods, Totes Isotoner and North American Buyers.

Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda is looking forward to once again opening its doors to the homeless next January and February. The program provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, a hot kosher meal, gently used clothing, a warm bed to sleep in, a bagged lunch and toiletries. The program will run for 8 consecutive Monday nights-Tuesday mornings starting January 2019.

This program cannot run without your ongoing generous support. We have seen first-hand how far your donations have gone and the difference you’ve made in people’s lives. We are in need of funding and ask that you please consider this program when making donations commemorating an occasion or when honouring a loved one to ensure our commitment to help those most vulnerable in our community.

We are also looking for donations of new and gently used clothing, specifically large and extra large jackets and winter boots, warm winter apparel, and toiletries. We ask that if you are doing a spring-cleaning of your winter clothing to please consider the Out of the Cold program. Furthermore we are encouraging people to take the opportunity to give back to the community and volunteer for this program.

There are volunteer positions available on the steering committee. Current openings include:

• Donations in kind – volunteers in need of soliciting donations of clothing and food• Night owl – volunteers for the late evening and overnight shifts• Sunday volunteers – needed to sort clothing and prepare for the guests to arrive on Monday• And more!

Please reach out if you are interested in joining this important cause.

If you are interested in volunteering for the 2019 program, please send an email at the

end of the summer to [email protected]. For financial donations, please contact the shul office at 416-633-3838. To donate clothing, please drop it off at the shul office or leave it with the shul security guard.

Chag Sameach!Out of the Cold Steering Committee

shinshinim update!

As many know, Beth Emeth is part of the ShinShinim program, an international program that brings young Israeli emissaries to Diaspora communities, including Toronto, to do a sh’nat sheirut, or a year of service. These teens have graduated high school, and defer army service for the year. They provide a variety of options for engagement - formal programs for our youth and community at large, as well as informal conversations and interactions. The ShinShinim are the cream of the crop, and really bring an authentic taste of Israel to our vibrant community. Our current ShinShinim, Ronny Yariv and Noam Peretz, have put together many excellent programs thus far and I encourage everyone to interact with them.

In January, I travelled to Israel on the Israel Engagement Mission as Beth Emeth site supervisor to select two new ShinShinim who will arrive in August 2018. I am delighted to introduce Omri

Aharonson and Yael Etzion, Beth Emeth’s 2018-2019 ShinShinim! I think I speak for everyone in the congregation when I wish them a Bruchim HaBa’im - a warm, cordial welcome to the Beth Emeth community!

ShinShinim are generously hosted by Beth Emeth families for a period of time every year. If you are interested in this incredible opportunity, please contact the office, or Dale ([email protected]) to speak with Karla Yakobi, ShinShinim lay leader. It is an experience your family will cherish forever.

aleph beit chadash school

Aleph Beit Chadash School has been going strong this year, enriching our lives with a deeper understanding of our Jewish identity. Everyone enjoyed our Chanukah celebrations in December. Now we are moving forward, learning more about Israel, and Chagim- Tu Bishvat, Purim and Pesach. Our Sunday mornings are packed with exciting learning activities, literacy development and lots of student engagement.

Our ShinShinim enhance our classroom learning. Noam Peretz and Ronny Yariv lead discussions and activities which bring Israel alive for our students. They have enriched our learning by contributing the Israeli lens and sharing their personal perspectives to our work on Jewish History, Modern Israel and Israel Advocacy. The students thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Chanukah in Israel.

We have many more upcoming exciting events in the near future. Our students will be baking their own challahs and also creating beautiful wooden challah boards for their Shabbat tables at home. We have the “Israel Amazing Race” and our Israeli Breakfast event with which the ShinShinim will be helping. We will be putting into practice our learning about performing mitzvot as we help pack Passover boxes for the Jewish Food Bank. We are excited to host our second annual parent/student chocolate Seder, which, no doubt, will be a delicious learning experience for all. Some of our students will be conducting seminars and presenting what they learned about leadership in our Jewish community to their peers.

Although our school year comes to a close in May, there will be lots of new learning between now and then!

We are now planning ahead for next year. Registration for next year will be coming out shortly. We have had a wonderful year and

want to be able to include your children in next year’s plans. Our focus continues to be providing the best Jewish education for all of our children. Don’t forget to tell friends and family to register early to ensure a spot. Discounts are available for s ib l ings o f s tudents registered and tuition is tax deductible.

Rhapsody in Schmaltz presents Michael Wex’s research about foods that we traditionally eat on holidays and Shabbat. He looks into the history of the food,

raises any controversies, and includes translated Yiddish expressions involving the

food. Wex takes great delight in discussing some of the foods which many of us grew up on and which our children would never touch! Michael Wex was

a speaker at the Lunch and Literature session in December and was very well received by those who attended. We have a signed copy of his book in our library collection.

Jessica Shattuck’s The Women in the Castle is a tightly written novel

about the fulfillment of a promise to assist the wives of those resistors who participated

and who were killed for their involvement in a failed attempt to assassinate Adolph Hitler. Marianne von Lingenfels is a strong-willed, focussed and judgemental woman who sees life as black and white. Through her dealings with the families she rescues, she learns valuable lessons that help her to move forward in her life after the war is over.

Come Back for Me, by Toronto author Sharon Hart-Green, presents two family stories. The first is the family of Suzy Kohn, a Toronto angst-filled and rebellious teenager in the late 60s. Her story begins with the sudden death of her uncle, who was adored

by her family. The second is the story of a Holocaust survivor, Artur Mandelkorn, who searches for his beloved sister. The two stories and the two families intersect in Israel after the Six Day War in this lovely novel.

The Zookeeper’s Wife: A War Story recounts the true story of the Warsaw zookeeper and his wife who were both very active in the resistance movement in Poland by helping Jews in the Ghetto and those hiding on the outside. Both have been recognized as Righteous Gentiles by Yad Vashem. The book is told as a report rather than as a narrative, which at times makes the writing quite awkward; there are numerous examples of acts of kindness of Polish citizens and quite a bit about how many Poles felt they had been betrayed by the Germans and the Allies, which paints a somewhat biased overall perspective of the country and its complicity in the war. Notwithstanding these issues, the story itself is fascinating and definitely worth reading.

Other Library News…A number of members have inquired about our extending the library hours. Please drop by and speak to the librarian about what night and time would best suit you and we will make our decision in the early spring.

We are continuing with our Books and Bagels program and Lunch and Literature series. Please consult the flyers on the stands in the foyer of the shule and stay tuned for details about next year’s exciting programs.

On behalf of the Library Committee, I want to wish you and your families all the best for Purim and Pesach.

The following poem was inspired by a book of poems titled maybe the moment; little poems written and illustrated by Ken Nordine who wrote using a very specific formula as a defense against insomnia.

Each poem has 8 lines of 5 syllables per line. The first line is maybe the moment. Line 2 rhymes with line 4. Line 6 rhymes with line 8. His poems are written free flow, with no punctuation or upper case letters.

Our week starts Monday morning in the library where we meet and greet our family of knitters. We always welcome new men and women to help us reach our goals, whether hats for Israeli soldiers or local places that need our blankets. Donations to our Chesed Fund are essential to purchase yarn. We so appreciate your support allowing us the opportunity to supply yarn to our knitters.

You are welcome to join us Monday and Wednesday afternoons for Mah Jong. You are welcome to bring your groups to play Rummikub and/or Canasta.

Tuesday and Thursday we offer an exercise class at 11 am. Conversation Cafe runs every Tuesday from 1:15-3:15 pm. We offer a chance to get together, chat, hang out and participate

in stimulating discussion shared alternatively with interesting programs ie. speakers, movies and other forms of entertainment. Cover is $2.00. Join us on February 27th for the movie Rose of Washington Square. Discussion to follow.

Please make every effort to join us. Our doors are always open.
