Most full-time students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, are exempt from the payment of council tax and this is automatically applied if you are living in University Square. Once you’re registered you can request this from the student documents portal at: www.essex.ac.uk/studentdocs. Any enquiries about the council tax on your property should be directed to your local council tax offi ce.
Your healthWe want all our students to stay as healthy as possible so it’s important that you are able to visit a doctor when you need to. You are required to register with a local doctor for the duration of your studies and you can use the following website to fi nd a GP and other health services, local to your new term-time address: www.nhs.uk. If you need medical help fast, but it’s not an absolute emergency, call 111 to get advice.

Getting Here
When should I arrive? This will depend on your course. Normally students arrive the day before their welcome programme begins. For new fi rst year students you should already be on campus and ready to start your welcome on the following dates:
BSc Nursing (all courses) Monday 15 September 2014
FdSc (Oral Heath/Adult Care) Monday 22 September 2014
Essex Business School (all courses) Monday 29 September 2014
East 15 (all courses) Tuesday 30 September 2014
BA Social Work Wednesday 1 October 2014
FdA Therapeutic Communication Friday 3 October 2014and Therapeutic Organisations (Adult/Child)
If you think you may need to arrive later you should check whether you would miss any compulsory events. Key collection for University Square may be different if you arrive later and you will have to request late registration if you miss the main registration period. Please email [email protected] if you think this may affect you.
Travel informationDetailed information about how to travel to our University, for students coming from both within the UK and from overseas, are on our website at: www.essex.ac.uk/about/getting_here. On the main arrivals day of Sunday 28 September 2014, the University offers a transfer service directly from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports to University Square, Southend Campus. You will need to book and pay for your seat in advance via: www.essex.ac.uk/students/new/international/travel-southend.aspx
More about the local areaThe town of Southend-on-Sea and the surrounding area has a great deal to offer and you can fi nd out more about the facilities and attractions from the following websites: Visit Southend: www.visitsouthend.co.uk Southend-on-Sea Borough Council: www.southend.gov.uk/visitors
Starting a new degree is likely to be a signifi cant change in lifestyle for most of our new student members, even if you’ve studied at degree level before. Give yourself time to settle in, meet new people and fi nd your way around. It may feel overwhelming at fi rst but it gets easier over time. Welcome is very different from the rest of the autumn term and you may not build routines until your teaching has begun, so don’t expect too much of yourself at fi rst. One of the best things you can do during Welcome is take time to fi nd out where the rooms are that you’ll have to go to for teaching, which will help you arrive in good time.
Finding your way aroundAs with any new environment you may fi nd the town centre layout of our Southend Campus confusing for the fi rst few weeks but don’t worry! There is a map on page 27 to help you fi nd useful facilities in the local area quickly. Note that inside University buildings, room numbers beginning with GB are in The Gateway Building, and room numbers beginning with TF are in The Forum. The fi rst number denotes the fl oor – so TF.2.15 is located on the second fl oor of The Forum (room 15). Don’t miss our Befriend Southend Team Challenge on Wednesday 1 October which also acts as a fun orientation exercise!
Looking after yourselfOur Southend Campus is generally a safe environment but it’s important to use common sense to help you stay safe as you settle into student life. Make sure you keep your valuables close when you’re travelling, and once you move into your accommodation don’t forget to lock your bedroom door and, if you’re in a ground fl oor room, close your window when you’re not in your room, even if you’ve only gone to the kitchen. If you’ve brought cash with you, make sure you open a bank account and deposit your money as soon as possible. Details on how to open an account are at: www.essex.ac.uk/students. Further information about staying safe and staying well throughout your time at Essex are in Your Campus Guide.
Academic Welcome programmeEach department has its own Welcome programme which you should follow carefully. The programmes identify events which are compulsory and those which are optional. As well as providing useful information about the University’s facilities and how to use them, these events will give you the opportunity to meet staff and network with fellow students before you begin your course, as well as introduce you to life at our University and help you settle into your studies. Please visit: www.essex.ac.uk/welcome and follow the links for Southend Campus. This will contain any updates or alterations to events so you should check back from time to time. If you have any questions please email: [email protected].
Information for students aged under 18 at the start of your courseIf you’re under 18, you must arrive on time and attend all your Welcome events. There will be opportunities for you to ask any questions you have, and to meet relevant staff in your department. You’ll be given important information about your time at Essex. If you’re unsure about which events to go to please email: [email protected].

Other eventsThere are a range of exciting events and activities available which don’t relate directly to your academic department, school or centre. These are all listed in your departmental welcome programme, at: www.essex.ac.uk/welcome. Some events are open to all new students, whilst others are for specific groups such as international students, and are marked ‘optional’. You must prioritise compulsory events over the optional events to ensure that you don’t miss the most important things!
Don’t miss our Befriend Southend Team Challenge on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 October. This is very popular with students each year and it’s fun all the way - taking you around the campus and across the town via a series of team activities. There’s lots of fab prizes up for grabs, too!
We’re also planning a brand new event to run in conjunction with The Forum’s first year anniversary celebrations, and this will be unveiled shortly before Welcome Week. BSc Nursing: A student’s viewAdvice for first year BSc Nursing students from current undergraduates:
nKeep on top of Biosciences!
nPlacements are hard work, but very rewarding
nAlways submit your draft essays to receive really useful feedback
nCheck your emails!
nKeep an eye on deadlines
nTake full advantage of the expertise of your tutors
nImmerse yourself in a hobby or socialise to switch off
BA Social Work: Tips for new studentsnDon’t worry about the role plays or being videoed in interpersonal
skills - it really helps getting lots of feedback and after a while you sort of forget about the cameras
nThere’s masses of stuff, bits of information and handbooks and people telling you things! Try to work out what you might need just for the next day to start with. Then, look at it all during the first weekend and think about the following week and what could be useful.
nGet out into Southend as much as you can and have a good look around. You’ll need to know it for the course as well as to have a good time.
nYou may be surprised when you realise how friendly all the tutors are and they know so much about social work. If you ever feel like you might have made the wrong choice, talk to them – they’ll be able to help a lot.
nGet into the habit of reading right from the start…newspapers, blogs, novels, everything - not just text books or the stuff we have to read! It makes it much easier to do the written work and have things to talk about in class.
nIn placements you’ll meet loads of new people and do things like make appointments to visit service users…it might be a bit difficult to start with and you might mess up a couple of times. Eventually it will get a lot better…you’ll wish you asked for a bit of help sooner!

Essex Business SchoolA student’s viewAdvice from our current students:
nMake use of what’s available, like ‘Languages for All’. Look for opportunities.
nCheck your emails regularly!
nHave a plan – try to think what you want to get out of University. Set yourself goals which will assist you in your future career.
nAfter a lecture or seminar, it’s a good idea to go over the material straight away while it’s still fresh in your mind. This helps a lot when the time comes to revise.
nDo some career research and look into modules that are available for your course. For example, if you want to go into HR, there are some modules that have HR elements.
Living at University Square was a good experience. My housemates and I have become close friends.
Get involved! It is very important when you go for a job that you can present yourself as a well-rounded person. You can’t achieve that without stepping out of your comfort zone of academic study.
