PLANNING YOUR FINANCES

1 Figure out your expenses The total of your expenses is the amount of money you’ll

need for each year of college. Go to georgebrown.ca or call your academic department to find out what these will cost.

2 Calculate your income Try to get as much income as possible from

non-repayable sources such as savings, gifts, part-time job earnings, awards and scholarships. This is money that you don’t have to pay back in the future. You have to pay off student loans with interest, over time, starting six months after you graduate.

3 Create a financial plan If you have more income than expenses, you’re in good

shape. But if you have more expenses than income, you need to make a plan and take action – ask for contributions from relatives, take out a student loan or search for more bursaries.

STUDY PERIOD BUDGETTo help plan your study period budget, refer to georgebrown.ca/budget and georgebrown.ca/calc for some useful tools.

SET A WEEKLY BUDGET while in college – and stick to it. That way, your money will last longer and you won’t be in a crisis after a few months.

TALK TO A FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE CONSULTANT if you’re in a financial crunch – don’t just walk away from college. They may help you develop strategies for paying your bills and covering the cost of college.

CUT COLLEGE COSTS WHEN YOU CAN. For example, buy used textbooks, and sell the books when you are finished with them.

DON’T GET CAUGHT IN A CREDIT TRAP. Students are flooded with credit card offers when they start college. Some jump at the chance, spend too much too soon and are stuck with high monthly interest charges for years.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING Toronto has a large housing and rental market that offers numerous accommodation options for students. Rent can be costly in a large city like Toronto so, while there are opportunities to be found (especially if you are willing to share a space), it is very important to establish a reasonable budget and give yourself plenty of time to explore your options. Estimated costs for privately arranged accommodation may range from $500 – $1,300 per month, depending on individual living situation and location. For more information visit: georgebrown.ca/housing
