Staffed hours at library cut by 66% NEW WALK MARATHON MAN STARGAZING FOR BEGINNERS VILLAGE UPDATES This year will see great changes in all Kirklees libraries and Kirkheaton library will be no exception. By September 2016 our staff support will have been slashed from 15 hours per week to just five. This means that keeping the library open for the other ten hours will be reliant on the good will of the volunteers. They will operate the library during these periods with distance support from library services. A self issuing machine will be installed, along with new computers. WiFi is also due to be installed during the next few months. More volunteers will be needed to cover the shortfall [which is being challenged by the volunteers as we go to press in January 2016] so if you are interested in helping contact Pam in the library. Much of the finances for smaller libraries is also being withdrawn. From March Kirklees will no longer pay to rent space for libraries in buildings previously owned by them which have been given to local communities. However, as ours is a leased building, YT are negotiating with them for some contributions to the cost of the library. It is also anticipated that Kirkburton Parish Council will be providing some limited financial support for libraries in their area but much of the costs of running our library will have to be met by YT. Please support us in our aim to keep the library for our community (see p.5 - Library Chatter). On a positive note it is heartening to know that due to the hard work of the library staff, volunteers and Yetton Together, the number of visitors to the library has increased by 43% over the last three years while all other local libraries have seen their visitor numbers drop year on year. In fact we are one of only four libraries in Kirklees to have bucked the trend of falling visitor numbers! This increase has helped save the library from closure, possibly along with the volunteers willingness to support just one member of staff rather than the usual two which saved the council over £10,500 last year. this issue NEWS Your FREE MAGAZINE for Kirkheaton, Upper Heaton, Gawthorpe, Bog Green, Briggate, Houses Hill, Wellhouse & Lascelles Hall ISSUE 14 SPRING 2016

Marathon ManAndy Wright is a member of Kirkheaton Parish Church and a passionate supporter of Kirkwood Hospice where his wife, Lisa, works. Last year he had a bright idea - to run 5000 miles (that’s the equivalent of 190 marathons!) over the next five years, 20 miles every week for 260 weeks - he won’t finish until 2020.When we spoke to him he was pleased to be slightly ahead of schedule, having already run over 330 miles. Getting a job in London has complicated things somewhat, so two evenings a week he is running around the tourist sites taking selfies to prove that he has been there. That has inspired him with a new project - “to run the whole Monopoly board in real life, taking pictures of every square on the board.”Later this year he will be doing the Sheffield and Leeds half marathons, regularly doing the Huddersfield or Dewsbury park runs, and keeping up the weekly average of 20 miles, with one or two full marathons planned for 2017.Remembering that this is to support the Hospice will you please sponsor him - “Please sponsor me for the time when I come home on a horrible wet Tuesday night after a day at work and run 8 miles before tea. Sponsor me for getting up at 6.30 am on a Saturday morning and doing 12 miles rather than having a lie-in.”To support Andy you can TEXT ‘AWKW50 £5’ to 70777, go to justgiving.com/andy5000 or follow him on Twitter @andy5000miles

Dalton Bank Circular Walkapprox 3 miles (4.9 km) with views across Huddersfield. Start at the community centre. With your back to the building turn left onto New Road. Cross and turn right. Continue up New Road towards Upper Heaton. At the last house on the left, turn left [sp] and continue along this path onto Dalton Bank. Walk straight ahead to the flatter area and turn right along one of the many paths which merge into one. Continue along this path on the top of the banking towards Upper Heaton as it bends right at the end of a wall into a field. Walk along the field edge onto a rough track. Turn left here and go through a gate onto a green lane. Approx 100m down the lane just before a gate, is a kissing gate on the left.Go through this gate and follow the path through scrub to another kissing gate into the plantation. Make your way along the well defined path above Dalton Bank Road. Where paths cross (marked by a bench) turn down the hill towards the road. Just before the car park turn left onto a path running parallel to the road over duckboards and through scrub. This emerges on open ground near a bend in the road. Turn left and follow a path up to the right around the hillside to come to the Nature Reserve car park at Well House. Cross the car park

and make your way down the road. Just before the road junction take a path left [sp] between some houses. Continue up a fairly steep field and turn left onto the path at the top. Continue on this path. At its junction with the path behind houses at Southlands turn right and continue forwards across the road and onto Stoney Ford Lane. Where this emerges at New Road turn right and cross the road to make your way back to the start.

Calling all budding D.J.’s• Are you a ‘bedroom’ D.J. – Great, but no-one sees you!• Wondered how to get into the Industry• How to get the right contacts• Looking for a Career Opportunity

Then this may be your chance to shine!

Kirkheaton Community Centre is planning a course to give you all the answers. Run by a local D.J. and Agent with years of experience, the course is expected to run for four weekly sessions – probably around May.No equipment needed just bags of enthusiasm and the will to succeed.

Limited places so don’t miss this great opportunity.Young people ages 14 to 23 years of age who want to find out more should contact Lorna by email [email protected].

“Kirkheaton Future” 2016During January the group progressed to the next stage of a legal consultation period. After Kirkburton Parish Council had submitted our Neighbourhood Plan to Kirklees Council Planning Department, it was published in the Huddersfield Examiner and copies of the application, map and explanatory text are available on the Kirklees Council Website kirklees.gov.uk/business/planningPolicy/neighbourhoodAreas. The Council invited comments on the neighbourhood area from 14th Jan to 26th Feb for a Kirklees Cabinet Council Meeting approval on 8th March. In the interim the group would like volunteers to assist with an audit of existing buildings and urban green spaces. Research will also be required on the village infrastructure e.g. vehicle and pedestrian traffic, what impact will the developments have on the roads, pedestrian safety, school places and medical facilities. A questionnaire will also need to be formulated and circulated to every resident and business within the boundary. If you can spare a couple of hours to help with the above, or require more information please contact [email protected] or telephone 07824 499 600.

A new ‘Friends of Kirkheaton Library’ group is being formed to support the changes which will be taking place in the library services. Any ‘Friend’ would not be expected to work in the library and no regular commitment is expected. The group’s main function will be to raise funds for library activities and to help run events there. We would welcome any one who is willing to support the library in this way. Contact Pam at the library or phone Lesley 01484 313 019 for more information.

Landfill Updates:Richard Hartley [site manager] writesThe weather has been an obvious hindrance over the past months and most of our time has been spent in water management. Small amounts of work have carried on in forming the cell for the landfill.• Planning is still in the hands of Kirklees MBC and with this in mind the start of domestic waste landfill is still online for June / July 2016.• Over 3000 plants are on order for further planting around the site and hopefully with some drier weather on the way these can now be planted.• Some works are scheduled to start during February on the maintenance of the newt land areas and ponds in conjunction with the Habitat Management Plan.

90 years memories appeal

This year will see the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The nation will be celebrating in June [her official birthday month]. We would like to commemorate the occasion by publishing any memories people might like to share of life in Kirkheaton during the last 90 years, in our June edition of Yetton News. It could be an event – sad or joyful, a particular character, changes you have experienced, school time memories etc - in fact anything of interest connected to the village. Please let us have your memories – contact us at [email protected] or send in your memories to the Community Centre, Fields Rise, Kirkheaton HUDDERSFIELD HD5 0LZ before Saturday 14th May.

ENVIRONMENTThe Gardening Group continue with their hard work and have planted up the area in front of the surgery, in addition to the 14 existing tubs, with bulbs and winter flowering plants. A rectangular wooden planter has also been added at the top of New Road beneath the village entrance sign.

PAVEMENTS AND FOOTPATHSThere continues to be a significant problem with dog fouling in certain areas of Kirkheaton, especially New Road and the footpath between Easingwood Drive and Moorside Road. Presumably the long wet spell of weather has made it difficult for some dog owners to clear up after their dogs, leaving behind an issue for parents

and children going to school, and other residents underfoot, especially during the dark evenings.

TRANSPORTA further consultation has been taking place re the 262 bus route passing through our village. As no local event was scheduled by Metro/Yorkshire Tiger for Kirkheaton, YT volunteers obtained posters and questionnaires which were placed in Kirkheaton Library for our residents to complete. Yetton Together’s website posted details of all the relevant information and an article appeared in the Local News section of the Huddersfield Examiner.

COMMUNITY

Apologies We apologise for some misinformation concerning the history of the Community Centre which appeared in an article in our Autumn 2015 edition of Yetton News.It has been pointed out to us that although Kirklees leased the building from 1986 until 2015 it was run very successfully as a community centre until 2003 by Kirkheaton Community Association. During that time numerous events and activities flourished in the building including two youth groups, art classes, folk dancing, play group and even rock band rehearsals! The association folded in 2003 due to lack of new volunteers and part of the building was then used by Kirklees to house the library.Again we can only apologise, especially to the hard working people who were involved with the Community Association and please be assured that we will double check our facts in future!

There may not have been snow in Kirkheaton this Christmas, but there was plenty of fun and great support of all the regular traditional events. Things kicked off properly with Kirkheaton Parish Church’s third Christmas Tree Festival, with trees by many local businesses and groups. Both the United Church and the Parish Church were packed out for their Christingle services - nearly 500 people between them, as were the Carols by Candlelight and other special events. Christmas Eve also saw the Beaumont Arms put on a fundraiser for Kirkwood Hospice, complete with Brass Band. Plans are now well under way for the next Arts Festival (28th-30th May - if you have anything to exhibit in any art form, please contact the Parish Office on 01484 531449) Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations. Various events are planned throughout the week beginning 6th June including an exhibition of memorabilia and memories; Young people’s music event; Village Garden Trail/Treasure Hunt, Family Ceilidh, finishing with the Scout and Guide Gala on the Sunday afternoon. If anyone would like to help plan these celebrations - and we are still very much open to ideas - there will be a meeting on 10th March, 7pm in the Community Centre. For more details or to feed in ideas please e-mail: [email protected]

In November an Automated External Defibrillator (A.E.D.) was installed outside Lepton Surgery. Also the Practice has purchased a second defibrillator for Kirkheaton Surgery for GP use should a need arise for anyone in distress attending the surgery. Unfortunately it is not fitted outside but will be there for any emergency. Kirkheaton already has an A.E.D. fitted outside the Cricket Club.A.E.D.’s are lifesaving units that can be used by a lay-person with no training, as they operate automatically and come with full audio and picture instructions that take the operator step by step through the process and will only move on when each instruction has been correctly completed. It is a fact that anyone suffering a heart attack has a much greater chance of a full recovery, the faster they can be treated and this type of unit has proved itself time and time again. Operated by Yorkshire Ambulance Service through the 999 service, the unit can be rapidly accessed by anyone

and applied to a victim with no risk of fatal error. It is opened by use of a key code that can only be obtained after assessment by an operator, following a 999 call. The new electronic prescribing system is working well and is saving patients time as they don’t have to collect prescriptions from the surgery. If you are not signed up to this please speak to your usual pharmacy. The Practice is still going through a reorganisation and will shortly have a new Administrator.Friends & Family Test: There is a patient feedback in the surgery so each time you have seen the GP, Nurse or another Practice member please complete the short feedback form and post in the box in the waiting room.We are always trying to improve our customer service. If you have had positive experiences at your surgery please leave a comment on the NHS choices website www.nhs.uk

2015 Christmas Tree Festival

This year’s Christmas Tree Festival at Kirkheaton Parish Church was another great weekend (12th - 14th December) with well over 300 people coming to see the trees on display. There was live music from local group ‘Special K’, the Kirkheaton Singers and the Almondbury Deanery Recorder group and a Carol service to end the festival. There were a total of 32 trees, a wood-turning stall, and trees with knitted, quilted or wooden ornaments – even one with recycled electrical items – and a display of angels by Kirkheaton Primary School. ‘So many people commented on what a great atmosphere there was and what a good time they had’, says the Rector, Richard Steel. ‘There were some really clever ideas, including a Guides’ ‘tree’ made out of sleeping bags and camp blankets, a large hanging made by a local quilter’s group, and ornaments made out of Lego on the Kirkheaton Library tree.’ ‘People were so creative,’ adds Mr. Steel. ‘We are grateful to all those who took part and contributed to a really fun community event.’

The favourite tree this year, by popular vote, was the church’s teenage BUG (Bible Understanding Group) tree, which focused on fruit including the Biblical ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ – Love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. ‘Perhaps those sentiments, along with the well made ornaments touched a nerve,’ says Mr. Steel. ‘We also had a tree that made some people cry – a bare tree surrounded by the kind of items a refugee family might be able to carry.’

Established over 40 years

“Stargazing for beginners - Our Place in the Universe”Robert Williams, a local amateur astronomer and currently President of Huddersfield Astronomical and Philosophical Society, has kindly offered to lead four stargazing sessions over the year for children and young people aged 8 to 16 years. These events have come at a good time with the latest of the space shuttles and with our own astronaut aboard circling the Earth. The aim of the sessions will be to increase our young people’s knowledge of the galaxies while having fun using telescopes. The programme will include a picture show - “A Tour of the Galaxy”, indoor presentations on shooting stars and meteorites and outdoor observations of the Moon and other planets subject to good weather conditions. The first session was held at Kirkheaton Community Centre on 25 February. Three further events with the same theme are planned for 12th May, 11th August and 3rd November.Publicity about the events has been distributed to the local schools, uniformed organisations and church youth groups.Contact Eric Hutchinson tel 01484 546664 E mail: [email protected]

Kirkheaton Scouts & Guides needs your help!

The leaders and volunteers provide fantastic activities and events for the children in the area, but they need your support if they are to continue. You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved. Do you have good communication skills? Are you great with numbers? Or are you handy at DIY? You can volunteer and help in any way you like. We are looking for volunteers to give just an hour or so each month to maintain the building, assist with administration, fundraising, or simply help with your fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Whether you are a parent, have a skill you think could be valuable or just have a little time to spare please get in touch. Thank [email protected] 07903 851 852

Local History GroupThe Kirkheaton History Group is to stage an exhibition to commemorate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. This exhibition will depict changing Kirkheaton during her lifetime and will run for the week commencing the 6th June. We would welcome volunteers to help prepare for this exhibition, together with any memorabilia. We are also collecting memories either written or oral (we have a digital video recorder).

Broadhead & Graves ReunionOver 20 former workers of Broadhead and Graves mill in Kirkheaton held a reunion Christmas lunch in the Beaumont Arms Kirkheaton. Former employees who included office staff, weavers and menders enjoyed a

get-together and talked about the time they worked at the former mill. One of the talking points was a photo of mill workers with Frank Broadhead, which was taken to celebrate his birthday. The reunion was organised by Lorraine Sykes, an ex-employee and Roger Armitage of the Kirkheaton History Group.Roger can be contacted on 07837412070.
