For many this week can be considered as end of summer time. Independence Day (21 Sep) is the last public holiday one can enjoy during the summer. The week after many students get back to school. And the days start to get shorter and slightly cooler.
Village feasts in Gozo come to an end but from our events section one can see that Gozo is still quite busy. Plus October is opera time and hence explains our purpose for our feature in this current issue.
The Italian executive chef of the Kempinski Hotel at San Lawrenz has also once again indulged us with 3 enticing recipes. But if you feel like being lazy, make use of our eating out section. Gozo’s culinary side has a lot
to offer.Summer might be coming to an end, but Arkadia has plenty of news to talk about. First of all it is proud to announce the introduction of NEXT in Gozo. NEXT will be opening on 2 October. Arkadia Foodstore has started to open from 9PM on Sundays. And last and not least, Arkadia Commercial Centre will be opening all day on Independence Day, 21 September.
One last note for our foodstore customers to not forget to collect a copy of our latest issue of ‘the foodie’. Lots of interesting recipes and information from foodies like us to you.
Enough for now. Enjoy your visit to Gozo!

your Gozo guide - 9
As Summer comes to an end, autumn steps in. For many it might be end of vacation time, no more sun and sea, and the kids just have to get prepared to go back to school. One might think that after all the traditional festas that are organised week after week from one village to another, Gozo chooses to take a break. Well the band clubs in Victoria think otherwise. For them it is opera time. And grand opera indeed!
Victoria is host to the island’s main phi lharmonic societies – La Stella and Leone. Music runs through their veins as they have played a big role to the socio-cultural development of the island of Gozo. Both have formidable wind bands. Both are organisers of one of the island’s main feasts – La Stella organise the feast of St. George in July while the Leone organise the feast of the Assumption in August. And both are the proprietors of the 2 largest indoor theatres on the island – the AURORA owned by the Leone Philharmonic Society and the ASTRA which is owned by the
La Stella Philharmonic Society. One might ask what they use the theatre for. Amongst other events, they put together their own opera production!
This year the rival theatres will once again be going big with 2 big name operas. The Leone will be going first with a production of George Bizet’s CARMEN at the Aurora Opera House on Saturday, 16th October 2010. Afterwards the La Stella will be presenting their production of Giuseppe Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA at the Astra Theatre on Thursday 28th and Saturday 30th October 2010.
Teatru Aurora: CarmenCarmen returns at the Aurora after 10 years when it was performed, for the first time in French, way back in November 2000. A single performance of Carmen will be held on Saturday, 16th October 2010.
The production will be host to an international cast of singers. In the main role of Carmen the

Aurora will be engaging Georgian soprano Tea Demurishvili. Other roles will be performed by Italian tenor Mario Malagnini (Don Jose), Venezuelan baritone Ernesto Morillo Hoyt (Escamillo) and Bulgarian mezzo soprano Adriana Yordanova (Micaela).
Local singers will be part of the cast such as baritone Noel Galea (Zuniga), bass Kevin Caruana ( M o r a l e s ) , s o p r a n o Claudia Tabone (Grasquite), and tenor Charles Vincenti (Le Remendado.
Musical direction will be entrusted to the resident conductor of the Aurora, Colin Attard. The Malta Ph i l ha r mon i c Orchesta will be participating along with a strong Aurora Opera Chorus.Artistic direction will be entrusted to Italian Novella Tabili.
Teatru Astra: La TraviataLa Traviata will be making a welcome return to the Teatru Astra twenty-one years after it was presented for the first time in April 1989.
This time round, Teatru Astra will
present two representations of Verdi’s opera which is surely one of the best-loved in the canon. The opera opens the ninth edition of Festival Mediterranea, a yearly extravaganza of music, culture and history, organised by the Teatru Astra. The festival runs until Saturday 27 November 2010.
La Traviata will have its first performance on Thursday 28th October whilst the second production is set for Saturday 30th October 2010.
With Miriam Cauchi as Violetta in the leading role in La Traviata, the production augurs great anticipation and a guarantee for success after her resounding triumph as Gilda last year in Rigoletto. Italian
tenor Alessandro Liberatore will sing the role of Alfredo, whilst the part of Germont will be interpreted by Marco Chingari. These leading roles will be supported Georgina Gauci in the role of Flora and Dorienne Portelli in that of Annina.
Festival musical director and conductor at the Teatru Astra, Prof
10 - your Gozo guide
Joseph Vella, is celebrating his fortieth year in this role. Prof. Vella will once again conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (leader: Marcelline Agius) for the performances of La Traviata. Maria Frendo will be in charge of the Teatru Astra Opera Chorus together with a strong male participation from members of the Teatro dell’Opera, Roma.
This new production will be under the artistic direction of renowned Marco Gandini, whose productions in the major venues in Italy, including La
Scala and Teatro dell’Opera, Roma have won him rave reviews. Mr Gandini has, uninterruptedly since 1992, worked alongside film and opera director Franco Zeffirelli.
