Some people may not understand why making a decision on having/or not having school is so difficult. The first thing I have to take into consideration is the safety of our students. With that said, even making decisions for our school is hard due to the variety of weather throughout the district. This is why I have always said that if you do not think it is safe to send your child on the bus you can either keep them home or bring them in yourself. You need to make the final decision because I may not know exactly what the weather is outside your door. Weather in Bakers Mills could be drastically different than the weather in North Creek. Use your best judgment on days we do have school. Now that is the weather side of the decision, another factor to consider is the fact that we need to have school to educate our students. If we closed school every time it snowed here in the North Country there would be many winters that our teachers would not get through half of their curriculum. I need to keep your child’s education in mind when making the decision on whether to stay open or to close. But there are still other factors we need to consider before we make our final decision. We also have to make sure that our town and county road supervisors feel it is safe to send our busses on the road. Remember there are times the weather may look okay, but we could have other issues like wind or flooding that make the roads not passable. These agencies are in contact with me and give helpful insight on the conditions of the back roads as well as high traffic areas. As the superintendent, I have to keep in mind the financial side of the equation as well. New York State requires we have school opened 180 days a year in order to receive all of our allotted State Aid. I do not like the fact that I have to take money into account when making this type of decision, but we lose about $28,000 for each day we are under the 180-day requirement. Lastly, but not unimportant, are time restraints. I have a very small window to make a very big decision. At times the snow storm is just starting when I am making the call, other times it ends up letting up after I have made the call. As we all know the weather is one of the most unpredictable events in life. So, safety is first and foremost, but many other things are also in the mixture. Always remember that you have the final decision on whether or not you are going to send your student to school. I hope this helps you to understand the decisions that are made by the district on school closings. Let’s hope for a safe and school-friendly winter. As I write this newsletter article we have already used three of our allotted snow days for the 2018-2019 school year and we were not out of November. Some people may not understand why making a decision on having/or not having school is so difficult. The first thing I have to take into consideration is the safety of our students. November’s question, “Should the

turkey be our National Bird? Why or

why not? was asked to Mrs. Hayden’s

5th grade class. This was not

included in our newsletter last month

and their responses are too

wonderful not to share with our

readers.

I don’t think the turkey should be our

national bird because it is very easy to

scare a turkey, while the bald eagle is not.

I also don’t think the turkey should be our

national bird because it is prey while the

bald eagle is a predator. Alissa Bennett

I think the turkey shouldn’t be our

national because it’s goofy, strange

looking and chubby. Bailey Brown

I think that the turkey should not be the

national bird because, I believe that the

turkey isn’t as formal as the bald

eagle. Addison Cole

I think the turkey should be our national

bird because you can write with their

feathers, eat them for Thanksgiving and

you can make a quilt out of their

feathers. Carly Davis

I think the turkey should not be the

national bird because it is funny looking

and they make weird noises. Chase Denno

I think the turkey shouldn’t be our

national bird because they don’t have

freedom or independence. They are not as

strong as an eagle. Trista Ellifritz

I don’t think the turkey should because I

think the bald eagle is a strong and fast

bird. The turkey is strong and slow. If

these birds are in a race, I think the

eagle would win. Memphis Facey

I think the national bird should stay the

same because the eagle has been our

national bird for about 225

years. Jeremiah Freebern

I do not think that the turkey should be

the national bird because we would have

to change everything. Jordan Fusco

The turkey should not be the national bird

because the eagle offers protection and

the turkey does not. Walter Hodgson

No, because the eagle has been it for a lot

of years and I think we as a country

should keep it. A lot of people hunt and

turkey. It would be a lot of work to make

the turkey be our national bird. The eagle

is a cool bird and there isn’t a lot of

them. Peyton Lawrence

I don’t think the turkey should be our

national bird because it is not as useful as

an eagle. Turkeys aren’t brave or fierce at

all. That is why I think the bald eagle

should stay the national bird. Marley

Lewis

Yes, I think the turkey would be a good

national bird because you see them all of

the time. They have pretty feathers and

they are all over America! Hawk

Millington

Yes, I love turkeys because I love the way

they look and sound. They can be found all

over the United States. They have a cool

sound. Stephen Millington

Page 4: Your Johnsburg Central School Newsletter · your door. Weather in Bakers Mills could be drastically different than the weather in North Creek. Use your best judgment on days we do

I think the turkey should be our national

bird because we have a lot of them and

they have beautiful writing feathers. The

turkey should be the national bird so

people stop eating and hurting

them. Ember Monroe

No, I think the turkey should not be our

national bird because it looks funny and

we would have to change a lot of

things. Hunter Monroe

I agree that the turkey should be our

national bird because a turkey can feed

people, you can use its’ feathers, and

turkeys aren’t rare like the bald eagle.

That is why I think the turkey should the

national bird. Haley Mosher

No, the turkey should not be our national

bird because they aren’t the smartest

birds and they can sometimes be

annoying. Keegan Mottram

I think that the national bird should an

eagle because they are rare and cooler to

see. I see turkeys almost every day.

Hopefully the bald eagle will always be our

national bird. Rowan Olesheski

The turkey should be our national bird

because the turkey is way more

interesting than the eagle. The turkey is

more colorful and unique than the

eagle. Sadie Porter

I don’t think the turkey should be our

national bird because the eagle is the

symbol for our country and the turkey is

just a bird. Hannah Sharp

No the turkey should not be our national

bird because the turkey is not that rare.

The turkey is celebrated for a holiday and

the eagle is not. The eagle is a symbol for

our country and the turkey is what we eat

for food. Lexi Sharp

I think the turkey should be the national

bird because in band lessons the clarinet

group is called the turkey. I can play the

turkey on the clarinet. Gabriella Spieler

Yes, I think the turkey should be our

national bird because we have turkey for

Thanksgiving. Alene Tabano

No, the turkey should not be the national

bird because the turkey has no

symbolism. Sawyer Thul

I disagree with the turkey being the

national bird because bald eagles are rare

and turkeys are common. Bald eagles fly

long distances and turkeys fly short

distances. Amari Trent

Should the turkey be our national bird? I

personally believe that there are pros and

cons between the turkey and the bald

eagle. Yes, there are millions of turkeys

within our country but at the same time

do we really want eat our national bird and

hunt them down? Lucia Williams

The turkey should not be our national bird

because it does not mean and tough. And

when Thanksgiving comes around they will

get shot. Mason Wing

This month’s question was asked to Mr. Hurley’s and

Mrs. Morris’s 4th-grade classes. “What was the best

Christmas gift you have ever given and why?

The best gift I have ever given was fake nails. I gave

fake nails to my mom and she loved them so much

she put them in her jewelry box. She wore them every

day after Christmas. My mom even wore them to

work.

Leah Owens

The best Christmas gift my family has given was a

book. The book was called Pet Cemetery. It was to

Gage. We know he will like it because he loves scary

movies. Another good gift was a small moose to my

dad. He loved it.

Reagan Morris

The best Christmas gift I’ve ever given somebody

was when I gave my Grandma Joelene something that

my Grandpa Gig (he passed away a few years ago)

always gave her on Christmas: chocolate candies. On

the to-and-from sticker, we wrote: To: Joelene, From:

Gig. I think this is the best Christmas gift I’ve ever

given because it reminds her of Pepaw (that’s what I

called Grandpa Gig). I gave Memaw (that’s what I

called Grandma Joelene) this because she was having

a hard time without him with her.

Regan Slater

The best Christmas gift I've ever given was a trophy

to my mom. I used a paper cup, paper, a highlighter

and a bag of candy. When I gave it to her she was

very happy about being appreciated. To this day, she

still keeps it on her dresser in her room.

Colin Morris

The best Christmas gift I have ever given were

candles and candle holders. It was to my grandma. It

was the best gift because my grandma wanted them.

Also, it was the best gift because they were

strawberry candles with deer and bear candle holders.

Craig Ward

The best Christmas gift I have given was a

bracelet. Well, I haven't given it to her yet but I will.

Her name is Trish and she hired my dad to work on

her house. I am giving her the bracelet because I

know that she likes bracelets.

Tate Bacon

The best gift I have ever given was a Nerf Gun. I

gave it to my cousin Alissa. She loved it. She shot

me with it too and this is why it is the favorite gift

I’ve ever given.

Noah Bennett

The best Christmas gift I have ever given was to my

mother. I participated in an art class after school that

was using materials from nature, paint and hot glue. I

made my mother a sunrise using paint, a jewel from a

necklace, garnet and a piece of wood. It was the best

Christmas gift I’ve given because it was to my

mother and she loved it.

Kayden Smith

The best Christmas gift I have ever given was

socks. My mom and I went out and bought colorful

socks. We bought a bunch of socks for the Nursing

Home. The old people there loved their new socks.

Hudson Dunkley

The best Christmas gift I have ever given to someone

was a dirt bike. I gave it to my brother and he is

smaller than me. He was so happy that he almost

squeezed me to death. On our first ride, we went to

my tree stand and climbed it to go bird watching. On

the second ride we rode down to my dad and he was

working at the firehouse.

Nick Sauer-Jones

The best gift I gave to somebody was a drawing I

did. It was to my Elf on the Shelf, Luke Elf Walker.

The gift was a drawing of him. I gave it to him and

went to bed. The next day was Christmas and I got a

note that said, thank you. Santa gave me a note too

and he wrote he left the drawing because it was too

good.

Jackson Goodspeed

The best gift I’ve given was a brand new Burton

Snowboard to my brother so he could snowboard in

the backyard with my dad and me. It was also so he

could try something new and get outside more and

play in the snow.

Tristin Campbell

The best Christmas gift I have ever given was to my

grandma. The gift was a little stand made out of twigs

and mosses, and it had her and I on it with a sign that

said, Grandma. I had made it in an art class that my

friend Lily Secor was in too. I used mosses for the

hair and used cut up pine cones to make the hats. I

made hats because she wears hats a lot. I gave the gift

to her because it was homemade and I know my

Page 6: Your Johnsburg Central School Newsletter · your door. Weather in Bakers Mills could be drastically different than the weather in North Creek. Use your best judgment on days we do

grandma likes homemade things. That is the best gift

I have ever given because I put a lot of thought into

it, and I also think my grandma really liked it.

Sophia Leigh

The best Christmas gift I gave my mom was a tiny

pine cone Christmas tree. It had a tiny stand made of

wood and a long pine cone that I painted green and a

little pine cone that I painted pink. It was supposed to

be a present. One reason it was the best Christmas

gift I have given because my mom liked it, and put it

in the living room. The gift was also homemade and

fun to make. That was the best gift I have given

someone at Christmas.

Lily Secor

The best Christmas gift I ever gave someone was a

slide for a toddler. It was the best gift that I gave to

someone because she had never had a slide before

and she really had fun with it. The girl had never had

so much fun, and she used it almost every summer

day. Another great gift I gave was money and food to

a homeless person. I think he was really happy to

have food and money would help him or her to

survive longer. Those are the best Christmas gifts I

have ever given.

Ayden Tuma

The best Christmas gift that I ever gave to Shawn is

an iPhone 7. He liked it so much. He started to set it

up once he got it. The next thing I knew he got new

games on the phone. Just to let you know he did say

thank you. Shawn let me play on the phone because I

bought it. He has about 5,000 texts on it. Shawn even

texts me on it. It is the best Christmas gift I ever gave

to someone because he has used that phone more than

any other gift I have given to someone. It is also the

best gift I have ever given because no other gift

would have been more fun to get. The phone is about

2 or 3 years old. He takes good care of it. My parents

paid for most of it, but I paid like 127 dollars. I liked

it a lot!

Clay Morin

The best Christmas gift I ever gave to someone was a

huge box of cookies to my mom. The reason I bought

them for her is that she loves those cookies. The

brand name of the cookies was Chips Ahoy. Chips

Ahoy cookies are crunchy, chocolatey cookies. Those

cookies were the best gift I’ve ever given because my

mom loves them and she brought them to New City

when we went there after opening all our presents.

That is why the Chips Ahoy cookies are the best gift

I’ve given.

Amelia Perez

The best Christmas gift I gave to someone was a

Foxy the Pirate Fox plushie from Five Nights at

Freddy’s. I gave it to my brother Frankie. He loved it

because Five Nights at Freddy’s is one of Frankie’s

favorite games. The store only had Freddy, Chica,

and Foxy, but my brother already had Freddy. I

already had Chica so the best choice was Foxy. They

had Mangle too, but I gave him Foxy. My brother’s

favorite one from Five Nights at Freddy’s can only be

found at Walmart which is Golden Freddy, but we

went to Target to buy presents. We went Christmas

shopping a week before Christmas last year I think. I

also gave my brother a Minecraft Mini Figure from

the ninth series block which is a diamond block but I

forgot which one was in there. Those are the best

Christmas presents I gave to my brother.

Lucius Volcheck

The best Christmas gift I have ever given my Mom

was a ring with a fake diamond on it. I gave it to her

after school one day and she said she loved it. She

wore it all the time. I gave it to her because it was

Christmas and I had a little bit of money so I bought

the ring. I thought that since it was Christmas I would

buy her the ring. She loved that ring so much she took

the ring to the store and got it polished and sized so it

would fit her finger and look nice. I was proud of

myself for getting her that ring. She went and got me

something that I really wanted for Christmas. I would

say it was a good Christmas.

David Forshay

The best Christmas gift I ever gave was to my mom

and dad which was an ornament. Both my parents

loved it because there was a picture of me in a little

ornament. Mom and dad both said they loved it so

much and I gave each of them their own ornament.

My dad loved his ornament because it had little

pieces of white paper as snow. My mom and dad both

love their Christmas ornament and they both hang it

on their Christmas trees. Since they both have their

own Christmas ornament, my dad puts his on his

Christmas tree with his girlfriend, and my mom puts

it on her Christmas tree with her boyfriend, so I share

Christmas with both of them. I love them both to the

moon and back into my heart, and so does Cohen, and

we share together on Christmas too. I love my mom

and I love my dad as well, and I love them the same,

and they love me too. I love them both so much.

Reagan Moos

My Favorite gift was a stuffed animal that I made at

Build a Bear workshop. I gave it to my dad for

Christmas. He loved it. He said he would keep it

Page 7: Your Johnsburg Central School Newsletter · your door. Weather in Bakers Mills could be drastically different than the weather in North Creek. Use your best judgment on days we do

forever. That is why it was my favorite gift

Trinity Lord

My favorite gift at Christmas was my dollhouse that I

got when I was a little girl. I gave it to my cousin

when I was older and she was thrilled to get it.

On October 25th, 21 students in grades 7-9, participated in a Game Night hosted by the JCS chapter of Natural Helpers. Natural Helpers are students in grades 9-12 that were voted by their peers as having a natural desire and ability to help others. Currently there are 12 members of our chapter. Students started the evening with a guided study hall where they had help in studying for tests, completing papers, and doing homework. Then they enjoyed snacks provided by the Johnsburg Central School Teachers Association. Next students learned some mindful breathing techniques they can use when they are feeling stressed or upset. The evening concluded with a school-wide game of Sardines (think reverse hide and seek) and Mat Ball which provided lots of laughs and silly fun. This event was created as a response to a survey given by the student body that stated stress was the biggest concern the majority of our students face. Both Natural Helpers and participants seemed to really enjoy the event. We look forward to the next!
