Melanie and Richard McDonald

Richard proposed to me on Christmas day 2010.

We were at my mum’s house with all my family and as

we opened our presents he saved the best til last.

Richard presented me with a small jewellery box and

inside had a pretend engagement ring with a post it note

saying ‘marry me’. We bought my engagement

ring together the following day from

Goldsmiths in Peterborough.

We booked our service in the Holy Trinity church in

Orton Longueville and the reception in

The Bull Hotel.

We chose the venue together, as we had visited

the Bull Hotel’s wedding fayre, and after we

looked around the venue we just knew it would

be perfect for our special day.

The theme we decided on was vintage and

romantic, using a mix of antique silverware,

candelabras, lots of dusky pinks, pearls,

diamonds and candles. My favourite

addition was the star light curtain which

we had from Stamford Linens, who also

decorated the whole venue for us. This

included the chair covers, flowers and

the table ornaments too.

My wedding dress came from Berketex Brides on

Westgate, they had a large choice and I spent

hours trying dresses on until

I decided on my dream gown.

There were many special

moments throughout the day,

and Andrew and his team at the

Bull Hotel ensured the day ran

smoothly. I can honestly say

‘I wouldn’t change a thing’.

We welcomed 50 guests and they

all felt that the Bull Hotel was a

perfect venue, the wedding was beautifully planned

and they all had a great day. Our photographer was

Studio1, who has a wealth of experience in wedding

photography and made sure he got some really

superb shots of the day.

I had always wanted to arrive to the church in a

classic car, so Richard booked a beautiful white

50’s Rolls Royce from Classic Wedding Cars to

collect me. It was amazing!

My hair was expertly styled by one of our own

stylists Heidi, and Gary at Cosmetics Inc

performed miracles with my make-up – I cannot

thank them enough.

As we both run a busy hair salon we could not

afford to take too much time away from work, so we

decided to take a few days off to go to Barcelona.

It was romantic and the views were stunning, we

loved every minute!

GUESTSGet this one out of the way first - if you sit down with your families and partners, and work out the maximum number of guests you will be inviting, this will give you an idea of the size of venue you will need. It will also help when planning your budgets and what venue to choose - for example will there be lots of children? Will you need separate areas where the older guests can enjoy the quiet away from the disco? Does it have plenty of parking? What are the options for overnight stays and is it easy for people to get to using

public transport, or disabled access? Will we be able to use our own caterers, supply our own drink, place a marquee etc, etc?

Once all of this is established and you’ve decided on either a civil ceremony or church, you can start your hunt for the perfect venue.

THE HUNTIf your time is short and you like to keep informed, go online. By using search engines you can place your keywords such as, ‘Wedding Venues Peterborough UK’ which will bring up a

One stop quality entertainment

Why hire two different people for your ceremony music

and disco and have a ‘lag’ in between. Wedding

Market has a great act who plays classical guitar for

you throughout your ceremony, then plays acoustic

guitar during the reception. For the evening he will

jump onto his disco rig and give you a filled dancefloor

and a reception to remember. There’s another ‘one-

stop’ act to offer you too, a great singer who will sing

class hits such as ‘Mack the Knife’ and ‘Michael Buble’

and then carry out a disco well into the evening. No

matter which you choose it’s just one contract, one

set up and delivery cost and nobody extra turning up,

just seamless entertainment to cover your whole day.

Prices from £375.

Keepsake or Thank you magazine

It’s not often you have cause to create your own glossy

magazine. Usually you’ll send your guests a thank you

card and catch up with them to show off your photos.

Why not send them this instead with a thank you message

on the front. Fill it full of your wedding photos, quips about

the planning, and create a fun and unique package of

stories of everything, from how you met, the proposal, hen

and stag do and beyond.

Include your best group shot from the day and why not

have a page listing your suppliers and say thanks to them

at the same time. We’ll work with you to incorporate your

day and some of your best photography to make a great

keepsake A5 magazine to send to all of your guests as

an alternative thank you card! You should start providing

the content before the wedding so that we can get it

out to your guests almost as soon as you have your

photographs. Prices start from just £3 each magazine.

In Asian weddings a license is not needed, however for the wedding to be recognised in the UK, a registry marriage is compulsory.

Hindu WeddingsThe Indian culture celebrates marriage as a Sanskara (sacrament), a rite which enables two individuals to start their journey in life together. It places the emphasis on three essential values: Happiness, Harmony and Growth. Once the bride and groom have decided to marry, Pandits (priests) are called to astrologically fix a time for the wedding to take place. There are nine stages in a Hindu wedding.

Tilak CeremonyThis is held one month before the wedding day. In Indian culture the bridegroom and his family are placed at high regard. This ceremony consists of the father of the bride applying tilak on the forehead of the groom; and it is to ensure that he is finally ready for marriage and that the bride’s family has accepted him as their would-be son in law.

Sagai (Engagement Ceremony) This is to bless the couple including a brief ritual where the couple exchanges gold rings and are then given gifts of jewellery and clothing by their new family.

Sangeet Ceremony (The Dance/Music Ceremony) This is organised only by the bride’s family but with changing times it is also observed by the groom’s family. In the ceremony, all of the females sing folk songs accompanied by a Dholak (two-headed hand-drum) and a spoon.

Mehendi Ceremony (Henna Ceremony) The Mehendi is an integral part of the wedding. During the ceremony, turmeric (ginger) paste is applied to the groom and bride’s face, feet and hands; this is to aid in the glowing of complexions. Traditionally, the henna is obtained by drying the leaves of the henna plant, it is believed that the deeper the colour of the henna, the more love, she will receive from her husband. Henna stands for luck and prosperity. As a tradition, the bride is not allowed to work in her marital house till her Mehendi fades away.

Var Mala Ceremony (Garlands Ceremony) This involves the exchange of garlands between the bride and groom, which indicates that the bride has accepted the groom as her loving husband. The bridal outfit consists of a red and white sari heavily embroidered with gold thread. The white signifies purity and the red signifies fertility.

Mandap CeremonyThis is performed under a canopy supported on four pillars which is called a Mandap. It is usually made of bamboo and is decorated with red and silver colours. The four pillars signify the parents on both sides, who have worked hard to bring their children up. All the rituals during the Mandap ceremony are performed in front of the sacred fire and hymns recited by the priest, from the Vedas. The sacred fire in the Mandap symbolises not only the clarification of the mind, knowledge and happiness but is also a clean and pure witness to the ceremony.

Asian WeddingsMany of the cultures in the East have customs or religious beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation. They are centred on the union of families as much as it is with the marriage of the couple.

‘Tel Mehndi’ Ceremony (Oil and Henna Ceremony) In this ceremony the bride-to-be is dressed in light colours such as yellow, orange and lime green and the groom will wear a typical Shalwar Qameez. The ceremony itself takes place separately at the groom and brides house and on separate days. The henna is placed on the hands, followed by fragrant oil for the bride and grooms hair and a small gift of money is then given by family members and guests.

Nikah (Wedding Ceremony) This ceremony is important and very religious, it is carried out by an Islamic cleric (Maulvi) whose responsibility is to ask the bride and groom, separately or together, their consent to marry. Without their mutual consent, the Nikah cannot take place and be blessed. The groom has to agree to a financial deal with the prospective wife. This money is obligatory and is known as the Mahr (Dowry) which will be hers to keep and use as she wishes. The payment is made to the bride to show her that he has a serious desire to marry her and is not simply entering into the marriage without any sense of responsibility. There is no limit to the Mahr, however based on the Hadith (Islamic Book), the minimum Mahr is ten dollars or the price of a goat today.

Rukhsaati (The Bride Leaving) This is the emotional highlight of the day, where the bride embraces her close family members and friends. In some traditions, when leaving, the bride throws rice over her head and mum tries to catch some whilst holding the Qur’an over her head. Throwing of the rice symbolises everything being

Kanya Daan (To Give Away)This is where the father of the bride places her hand in the hand of the groom signifying her ‘giving away’ to him. In Hindu tradition, a man cannot claim a woman unless she is offered by the father or the elected head of the family.

Saat Pheras (Seven Steps) The Saat Pheras is when the couple walk around the sacred fire seven times, signifying the beginning of their journey through life together. These Saat Pheras can also be read as a union of seven lifetimes. This ritual is conducted on the mandap and each step represents a marital vow. For completion of the mandap ceremony, the groom places a black and gold beaded necklace on the bride; it is called a Mangal Sutra. Following this, vermillion (red) powder is placed in the parting of the bride’s hair, this is known as Sindhoor Daan and it is the final act declaring the bride’s marital status.

Vaidai Ceremony (Bride leaving)As she is leaving, she throws three handfuls of rice and coins over her head. This symbolises that the bride is repaying her parents for all that they have given to her.

Islamic/Muslim Weddings Islamic marriages are not technically considered to be ‘made in heaven’ between ‘soul-mates’ or ‘destined for each other’; they are not sacraments. They are social contracts which bring rights and obligations to both parties, and can only be successful when these are mutually respected and cherished.

repaid to her father and holding the Qur’an over head brings prosperity to the bride.

Walima (Reception) In Muslim marriages, they have to be declared publicly. It is a party for the purpose of announcing publicly that the couples are now entitled to each other.

Sikh WeddingsThe Sikh weddings are held in a Gurudwara, with a member of the religious place. Sikh weddings are elaborate and extend over one week.

Tilak (Engagement Ceremony) A member of the Gurudwara recites hymns, offering a date to the groom and applying tilak to his forehead. A dowry agreement is also made; Sikhs have now strictly condemned dowry payments, and believe that in the wedding exchange, all the bride’s father should offer is his daughter.

Chura Ceremony (Bangles Ceremony)The Chura Ceremony is held at the bride’s home and it is a sacred ritual where the bride is adorned with red and white bangles.

Mehendi (The Henna Ceremony)This is an intimate ceremony, in which the Mehendi is passed around for their blessings and they leave some money in the platter. The bride’s henna can take hours to achieve its deep red colour.

Jaimala Ceremony (Garlands Ceremony)Like in Hindu weddings, the couple exchange garlands. The bride garlands the groom first, signalling her acceptance of him as her husband.

Ananad Karaj (The Actual Wedding Ceremony) The Anand Karaj wedding ritual takes place at Anand Vela, (early morning) this is associated with peace and tranquillity, where a member of the Gurudwara conducts the ceremony. The groom and bride circle four times around the Guru Granth Sahib (Holy book), each round combined with hymns.

Vidaai CeremonyThe bride’s family bids her a tearful farewell as she throws back a handful of rice over her shoulders, signifying that she is paying off the debt of food to her parent’s home. This is a Hindu ritual which the Muslims and Sikhs have picked up.

The Role of the Independent Civil Celebrant

An Independent Civil Celebrant offers an alternative twist to the current traditional marriage routes offered by a religious church ceremony or a registrar conducted civil ceremony. By listening carefully and fully understanding the bride and groom, the celebrant will:

• Write the ceremony • Help you create your personal promises and vows to each other• Help you with the music, poetry, readings (religious or otherwise)• Offer ideas to include something symbolic in the ceremony• Choreograph your entrance and guide who stands where during the ceremony• Organise a rehearsal to reassure everyone• Conduct the ceremony on the day

They can also perform this full service for a spectacular renewal of vows or civil partnership.

WHERE AND WHEN CAN I HOLD MY ‘CIVIL CELEBRANT’ CEREMONY?What you may not realise is that your ‘civil celebrant’ ceremony can take place wherever and whenever you wish. No limitations!

You may want to have a very simple ceremony attended by a group of family and close friends in the garden of your childhood or your favourite pub or restaurant. You may wish to have something on a grander scale at a location

which is personal to you both as a couple. How about having it by a lake, on a boat, in a wood or by the sea, or even at the place where you both met. The choice is endless.

What time would you like to be married? Maybe it is at sunrise or sunset or even later with flaming torches?

Whatever you dream of and hope for, it is possible. You are only limited by your imagination and can make it everything you want it to be!

WILL I LEGALLY BE MARRIED?An Independent Civil Celebrant is not registered to perform the legal part of a marriage. The legally binding part of the service must be completed by a registered Officiant at your Register Office which takes only a few minutes.

So you can simply book the Register Office for the legalities and attend with two witnesses, which is an inexpensive and quick affair and on the same day, or days, weeks or months later plan your dream wedding at the location and time you have chosen. Your Independent Civil Celebrant will conduct the special service with your entrance, personal promises to each other, exchanging of rings and any meaningful symbolic ceremony.

Page 47: Your Local Wedding Scene - Autumn/Winter 2012

47Email: [email protected] | www.yourweddingscene.co.uk

Alternatively, you could have a celebrant perform your day as a ‘commitment ceremony’ without going through the legalities.

WHY CHOOSE AN INDEPENDENT CIVIL CELEBRANT?Everybody wants the “Wedding of Their Dreams” and on most occasions everything is planned with precision but not usually the words and the content of the actual service.

Currently, the words you hear during traditional services and the choice of words you say have been the same and repeated by couples for years. Having your own words woven into the ceremony is what an Independent Civil Celebrant will do. Your celebrant quickly becomes your friend and is there to support and guide you both through the service and assist you with writing words that could come from your heart and that could live in yours and your guest’s memories forever. You should book a celebrant who you connect with quickly.

Your ceremony could be anything you want it to be, for example did you know that the actual words and declarations of any marriage ceremony take only

six minutes? Did you also know that the exchanging of rings is not a requirement in a marriage ceremony?

So this is a route which can really let you form your own unique ceremony and day.

HOW WOULD A ‘CIVIL CELEBRANT’ CEREMONY BE DIFFERENT?In addition to holding it outside at the time you wish in the location you wish, at the heart of the wedding is the desire for each of you to make a declaration of love and commitment to each other as well as promises and vows. It’s all about the words that tell everyone about your life together, your commitment to each other for the future and about including your choice of music, readings and songs and most importantly doing it in a location where, when and how you want.

HOW MUCH DOES HIRING A CIVIL CELEBRANT COST?Like all things wedding, it depends on how much or little you want but expect to pay around £350 for a good celebrant to help you write your words and really make your day special.

Symbolic | ceremONIes

EXCHANGING OF RINGS CEREMONYThe giving and exchanging of rings is purely ceremonial and has no legal standing. There’s the standard promise, “With this ring I thee wed….” or spend time thinking about what this symbolic ceremony means to each of you and create the words that come from the heart. How about something like “….. this ring has no beginning and no ending, which symbolises that the love between us will never cease. I ask you to wear this ring as a reminder that you are always surrounded by my enduring love”

CEREMONY OF RINGS CEREMONYA wonderful ceremony to include all of the guests at your wedding, the Ceremony of Rings is where the wedding bands are passed between all of your guests, each person making a wish for your new life together before you exchange them with each other.

HANDFASTING CEREMONYA really delightful celebration where the couple gaze lovingly and deeply into each other’s eyes and whisper promises to each other as the celebrant gently binds their wrists together with a red cord. The red cord signifies love and the knots indicate the tender joining of their commitment to each other. Remember the saying…”tying the knot”.

Which one should we choose? Which one suits us best and reflects us in the best way? Rituals and ceremonies are so much part of our history and most, long forgotten! Here are some ideas:

Please mention the Wedding Scene | Telephone: 01780 78361348

Something Special and Symbolic for the celebrant to add to your unique ceremony

CANDLE CEREMONYCandles symbolically represent so many things in life: love, joy, connection, light, warmth, energy, acknowledgment and remembrance. This beautiful ceremony with the lighting of one or several candles, depending on your choice, joins minds, individuals and families together on this special day. “This one light cannot be divided, neither shall our life”.

THE ROSE CEREMONYThe rose is considered a symbol of love. A single rose means “I love you”. Exchanging this beautiful flower towards the end of your wedding ceremony is the first gift that you give to each other. On each anniversary, at a special place in your home, you leave each other a single rose confirming those special words “I love you”. In times of hurt, sadness or when you cannot find the words to express something that concerns you, place a single rose in that same place and that single act will say more than any words can express.

JUMPING THE BROOM CEREMONYDating back to the 1600’s, so, very much part of our history and long forgotten, this amazing ceremony is now seen as a symbol of sweeping away any prejudices and negative elements of the past, making way for the beginning of your life together with all things new and positive. The broom (similar style to the old fashioned branch broom), decorated with ribbons and flowers, is taken by each of you in turn and with a sweeping motion, suitable words are spoken. The finale of this ceremony is when you both hold hands and jump over the broom, into your new life together to the applause of your guests.

Page 49: Your Local Wedding Scene - Autumn/Winter 2012

SAND CEREMONYA very colourful and meaningful ceremony, representing the joining together of separate lives, families and friends by pouring different coloured sand into a beautiful Unity Vase, reminding you forever of this special day. “Life’s moments are as grains of sand, forever moving and shifting with the winds of time. Today, you are making your eternal commitment to one another, blending the sands of your lives together. From this moment on you shall become one, never to be separated.” Similarly, coloured water is another option for a Unity Vase.

WINE CEREMONYA “Quaich” is a two handled cup and signifies the trust and unity between the two of you and marks the blending of two families. It symbolises the love and trust between you as you share the first drink of your marriage together. The cup is filled with wine or your favourite drink, either before or during the ceremony. At the appropriate moment, the groom holds the cup with both hands and the bride places her hands over his and they take turns in drinking.

Contact us at Wedding Market if you are thinking of hiring a celebrant and

we can help you find one that’s right for you.

For a 2pm ceremony:

9.00 It’s going to be a long day, lie in for as long as you can.

9.15 Get in a nice relaxing bath with aromatherapy bubbles

and candles.

9.45 Eat a good breakfast, regardless of those tummy butterflies.

10.00 Drink your normal coffee or tea, no champagne just yet!

10.30 Welcome in your bridal party, make sure they all help you

get ready and have a role to play. Assign the sending of

your thank you cards to a member of your party.

11.00 Welcome in your hairdresser and make up artist, they

know what they’re doing from rehearsals.

11.15 Welcome in your photographer/s who will start shooting

your party getting ready in line with the preparations you

did with them in consultations.

Have a celebratory ‘half’ glass of champagne with your party

and thank them for all of their help.

13.30 First car arrives and takes mother and bridesmaids to church.

13.45 Second car takes the bride and her father.

13.58 Stand outside the church with your father and bridesmaids

waiting to turn from a Miss into a Mrs.

The rest of your day is a whirlwind of vows, thanks, laughter, tears

and entertainment, opening emotions you never thought you had.

Enjoy it. Your photographer, planners and bridal party will all ensure it

goes swimmingly well.

Wedding Flowers

Perhaps influenced by the ‘big movie’ and all those dramatic wedding scenes,

outdoor weddings are popular, with gardens decorated with flowers and ceremonies

taking place under decorated arches – not always practical in our climate, but why

not erect a flower archway indoors to provide an eye-catching feature!

A similar feel is created at traditional Jewish weddings where the ceremony is

conducted underneath a ‘chuppah’, decorated with flowers and a pathway strewn

with petals to symbolise fertility. Both bride and groom wear white as a sign of

spiritual purity and this is often echoed in the flowers. White and green is a

classic colour combination which you could easily adopt – try bringing it to life

with touches of zesty lime green.

Flowers also play a part in Hindu wedding ceremonies, during which garlands of

brightly-coloured flowers are exchanged. Bring a real flavour of the East to your

wedding by incorporating flowers in vibrant colours, such as bright red, fuchsia

pink and orange.

TraditionalChinesebridesalsofavourredandoftenincluderedandpinkamongst

their wedding flowers. Red roses and carnations signify love, whereas the lotus

flower means unity - but the orchid has a special significance as it stands for love

and fertility.

But if you are an English rose at heart, there is plenty to inspire you from our own

Christian-basedtraditions–flowergirlsscatteringpetalsinfrontofthebrideto

bring happiness; white to signify purity; and armfuls of country garden flowers in

soft hues offset by lush green foliage - used to create pretty and informal posies

and table centres.

By Helen Jane www.helenjanefloristry.co.uk

Flowers are great for making your wedding day memorable and you might already have ideas on how to use them. But if you need inspiration, take a look at how wedding flowers have traditionally been used within different cultures – and don’t be afraid to borrow a few ideas to give your own wedding an unusual twist!

1. TanFake tan disasters are a big no-no for your special

day. Plan in advance if you need a course of

sunbeds, or why not consider using fake tan. If

you are having a professional spray tan applied,

always do a test run well before your wedding day

to ensure you are happy with the colour and end

result, not forgetting the skills of the person who

applies it.

I personally feel that spray tans don’t give the

coverage I prefer, but I do like to have a healthy

colour all year round. Why not try a salon

St Tropez tan application, or if opting for a do

it yourself tan try Boots No7 Quick Dry Tinted

Lotion - £12, it comes in two colours with a handy

pump action bottle and the lotion is tinted, so it’s

handy to see where it’s going. Don’t forget to use a

tanning mitt to prevent tell tale tan marks on your

hands and in-between your fingers, St Tropez do a

good one for £3.50.

The top 5 beauty tips for your big day...

2. Pedicure & ManicureYou have to make sure your hands are in top shape

for your wedding day because everyone will want to

see “the ring”. So planning ahead is very important

so your hands look perfect on the big day.

I suggest booking a manicure and pedicure two

days before the wedding, so it’s one thing less to do

on your big day. If funds are tight, why not do it

yourself? I have plain gel nails so I can change the

nail polish when I want, they cost from £30 for a

new set and arond £15 for infills.

3. FacialIf you want glowing skin, have a facial four weeks

beforehand. Don’t book one near to your wedding

day, as facials draw out impurities and can cause

spots. I highly recommend Elemis facials, if you’ve

never had one before ask around for word-of-mouth

recommendations to find a good salon.

4. HairFor your big day carefully choose the colour and

style, avoiding major colour changes. Book an

appointment with your colourist a week before the

wedding so your hair has a chance to absorb the

colour and incase anything goes wrong and needs

correcting. Keep your hair in top condition by using

a treatment; I use Kerastase Ciment Anti-Usure a

reconstructive treatment for worn-out lengths and

ends, I leave it on for 3-10 minutes then rinse, it

leaves hair feeling nourished and silky, RRP £17 –

available at all good hair salons.

5. Make-UpBridal make-up is not only about make-up for

the occasion but also about pre-bridal skin, facial

care and treatments. It must be photo friendly too

and so professional help is often advised. Hire a

professional make-up artist so you look your best

on your special day. Prices start from £35, but can

range to £200 including a trial.

Generally the bridal look is quite natural.

To enhance your eyes, try either eyelash extensions

or strip lashes. If you haven’t tried either before, give

them a test run prior to the day of your wedding.

Don’t forget your waterproof mascara – just in case

those tears of joy come! For first-timers try the

Eylure Naturalites strip lash range - available in

Boots, RRP from £4.95.

Inspirational | HONeymOONs

There’s no doubting the importance

of a honeymoon, a once-in-a-lifetime

holiday that’s tailored to your likes,

providing memories that stay with

you forever. We start off with a blank

canvas, building up a honeymoon

perfect for your needs, because

we simply don’t do off-the-shelf

itineraries. With our inside knowledge

on a wide range of destinations from

Anguilla to Zambia, rest assured that

our professional advice will leave you

with a unique itinerary that will bring

your dreams to life.

Here are a few ideas for a unique and

inspiring honeymoon....

Everyone has their vision of a perfect honeymoon – maybe lounging about on a reputable

Caribbean island, or being whisked off on an African safari. But maybe you want something

different, off the beaten track and to buck the trend of the usual clichés of a ‘honeymoon’. At

Inspirational Travel we like to show you there’s more to the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, and

also suggest places that have been barely given a mention in the whirlwind of travel talk.

Mozambique

Flanked by African heavyweights like South

Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, Mozambique

often gets overlooked, but with a stunning

1,500 mile coastline swarming with deserted

beaches, this place is the ideal setting for

‘barefoot luxury’. Mozambique doesn’t just

house fabulous beaches; the vast coastline

attracts divers, snorkellers and deep-sea

fishermen. In the north, Azura Quilalea Private

Island is an intimate, Crusoe-like gem, made

for romance and tranquillity, whilst in the south,

White Pearl Resort Ponta Mamoli is a cute,

boutique resort offering beautiful sightings of

Loggerhead & Leatherback Turtles nesting

along the shores.

Unique & Inspiring Honeymoons

Morocco

Only 9 miles of water separate mainland Spain

and Morocco, but in reality they are worlds

apart! Delve into the vibrant cities with rich

French & Arabic culture, venture into the Atlas

Mountain range and explore the numerous

traditional Berber villages, and relax on its

miles upon miles of beachfront, with all this

diverse history & topography being only a 3

hour flight from the UK. The La Sultana Hotel

& Spa in Marrakech is deep within the heart of

the City’s Medina and only a stone’s throw from

numerous stately palaces and the notoriously

famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Combine a

stay here with its sister property in Oualidia on

the Moroccan Coast, it provides tranquil respite

in lush, serene surroundings looking over a

lagoon that’s teeming with the likes of Pink

Flamingos, Waders and Ibis.

Uganda & Rwanda

Since the international troubles of 20 years

ago, Uganda & Rwanda have made

tremendous strides to become warm, charming

nations thriving in economic prosperity. Take in

the rainforests of Volcanoes National Park in

the north, home to the last remaining Mountain

Gorillas, and the rolling hills of the Nyungwe

National Park in the south. Nyungwe Forest

Lodge offers Chimpanzee treks through the

rainforests and a chance to spot the likes of

the Black & White Colobus, Grey-cheeked

Mangabey and Blue Monkey, as well as the

elusive Golden Monkey. Sanctuary Gorilla

Forest Camp in Bwindi Impenetrable National

Park is the last natural refuge for the Mountain

Gorilla in Uganda, with trekking offered year-

round, proving incomparable close-up viewing

with our closest genetic relatives.

Anguilla

‘Where?’ is the usual response when

someone mentions this little Caribbean

limestone splodge, but that’s why so many

people love Anguilla with its refreshing lack of

commercialism. This is an island that retains

its old world charm and laid-back vibe; a little

gem that is home to truly wonderful beaches,

boutique cottages, private villas and a handful

of traditionally tasteful resorts. Its hideaway,

blissful lifestyle attracts celebrities looking

for some ‘me-time’ in pure serenity. CuisinArt

Golf Resort & Spa has the whole beach-lined

Rendezvous Bay to itself, one of the many

unblemished white sand beaches, leading

into the crystal-clear waters that Anguilla is so

notable for. This island does beaches very well,

very well indeed.

Lake Malawi

Africa’s third largest lake covers nearly

24,000km2 and hosts beautiful white sand

beaches and is one of the world’s living treasures

– an underwater paradise containing more

species of fish than any other in the world! A

number of superb resorts and lodges, such as

Kaya Mawa (Malawian side) and Nkwichi Lodge

(Mozambican side) are dotted around the lake,

providing excellent bases from which to enjoy

watersports, snorkelling, scuba diving, bird-

watching and to relax and enjoy the warm and

temperate climate. They also follow a responsible

tourism & eco-friendly ethos and offer an insight

into rural life. Visit local villages and witness

communities that are flourishing through

sustainable tourism with the development of new

schools, subsistence fishing & farming, plus at

the same time employment creation.

I’m biased: I’m a professional photographer. I’ve photographed

hundreds of happy couples over the years. But I’ve also met

a lot of very unhappy couples – ones who got the friend of a

friend to take their wedding photographs and ended up with

disappointing results.

These days, thanks to digital photography, many people have

cameras capable of taking decent photographs. But are the

owners of those cameras capable of taking decent photographs?

Your wedding is the most important day of your lives. All that’s

left at the end of it is a host of wonderful memories – and your

wedding photographs. You need the latter to reflect the former,

so that you can relive those memories over the decades to

come.

Obviously I recommend hiring a professional photographer, if

you can afford it. But I recognise that not everybody’s budget

stretches that far and, if you’re a keen amateur photographer

and you’ve been asked to take the wedding photographs for

a friend, here are my 10 Top Tips to help you capture the day.

1 Meet the couple and ask them what sort of photography they want. Formal or candid? Or a bit of both?

2 Ask them to write a list of the important shots they want taken, so that you have a shooting script on the day.

3 Does the bride want pre-wedding preparation shots? Do they want you to photograph the speeches… or the first dance?

4 Ask the vicar or registrar whether they allow photographs to be taken during the ceremony. Most do, but nearly all insist on no flash, so use a high ISO setting on your camera.

5 Always bring two cameras – in case one goes wrong – and plenty of memory cards… as well as an umbrella, just in case it rains.

6 Be creative with depth of field. Use a big aperture to throw the background out of focus.

7 Make sure the couple are always either looking at the camera or each other. Take plenty of shots in case one blinks.

8 Get a member of the wedding party (eg an usher) to volunteer to gather together the people needed for various group shots.

9 Keep an eye out for the candid shots: the cute kids, people laughing, the couple relaxing

10 As soon as possible, back up all your images onto a computer or portable hard drive – just in case. Later you can have fun editing them and enhancing some of them on Photoshop. But that’s another story, for another time.

DIY Bridal Beauty TipsYour wedding will be one of the happiest days of your life, but it may well be one of the most expensive days of your life too. Whether you have a bulging budget or tiny budget why not consider some DIY beauty options… Why splurge when you could save?

HairJustbecauseit’syourweddingdaydon’tfeelyouhavetopaytogetyourhair

styled professionally – especially if you’re just having hair down. Why not try

out some new hair styles at home or pick up some tips using magazines or an

online search.

TanningIf you’re a tanorexic like me, your want to be a bronzed goddess to set off your

white dress, you can save money by doing your own tan at home rather than

paying for a spray tan. Remember fake tan disasters are a big no-no for your

big day, so practice makes perfect. I’ve used the same fake-tan for the last five

yearswhichistheNo7QuickDryTintedLotion,Boots£12.

Make-UpMake-up is the most important bridal beauty consideration alongside your

hair, you need to make sure you don’t wear too much make-up – or too little.

My biggest tip would be waterproof mascara; so you’re covered if you start to

get teary – no one wants panda eyes on their wedding day.

ManicureIt’s important that your hands and nails are in good condition for your big day,

Why not do your own manicure or pay for plain gel nails which are cheaper than

French tip acrylic / gels nails – then you can change your nail varnish but have

the strength and length of the gel nails underneath.

Our Wedding Day

How we metAmy and Matt first met when working together at Associa Ltd in Uppingham several years ago. However it wasn’t until 2009 that the romance started when they met again after a couple of years apart on an evening out in Stamford.

The ProposalMatt proposed to Amy in April 2011 at Mullion Cove in Cornwall – a favourite spot near to the village in which Matt’s father grew up and

where they love to spend as much time as possible. The proposal came just after a champagne picnic, the sun was shining and the sea below was like a mill pond. The afternoon was spent checking out engagement rings in the local jewellers (but nothing other than a whopper from Dawson’s of Stamford who provided all wedding rings and Amy’s jewellery would do) – a perfect day!

Where we decided to get marriedAmy grew up in the village of Uffington just east of Stamford and so the couple had the easy choice of getting married at the picturesque St Michael and All Angels Church in the village. This was followed up with a reception in a superb marquee at Burghley Park Cricket Club with a view to the house in one direction and a fantastic vista of Stamford

which provided a perfect background for the wedding photos in the other. The club is where Matt plays and both of Amy’s brothers are heavily involved in the running of the club.

How we came about the theme and where did we get our inspiration? After deciding on the marquee, it felt right to have a country theme drawing on Amy’s equestrian interests and Matt’s family farming background. Navy with white spots proved the order of the day across the wedding stationery (from the initial invite design by Amy’s Auntie Sarah and Uncle Colin, through to the order of services printed by family friend Tony Britton), chair sashes (hand made by Matt’s Mum and Amy) and upholstery by Jane Doyle giving a unique feel to the day. Many hours were spent with Amy’s

parents Rachel and Michael considering ideas, themes and designs before arriving at the stunning final decision.

Where did you source everything for the wedding day?Amy explained, “We were very lucky to find many local suppliers, complemented by family and friends providing other services from further afield. The flowers were provided by the fantastic Greensleaves Florist in Stamford whose consultative and flexible approach, generous warm service and top class floral creations was nothing short of superb. Official photos were taken by Nico Morgan who managed to keep calm when all those around him may not have – even advising the bridesmaids on how to correctly dress the bride in her wedding dress from Annie Laurie Bridal in Easton on the Hill. My hair was expertly done by Smithy’s of Stamford and make-up perfectly applied by Catrina from Emma Canning Beauty”.

Amy and her father Michael were transported to the Church via horse and carriage (provided by Townies Carriage Hire) and this was a surprise for them both (courtesy of Matt and Amy’s mother Rachel) but helped settle Amy’s nerves prior to the ceremony. During the

signing of the register, the congregation listened to Amy’s second cousin Raphaella Papadakis, an up and coming opera singer whose performance was truly stunning. As Amy and Matt set off to Burghley Park in the carriage, the rest of the wedding party were transported in Land Rover’s courtesy of Sturgess Leicester.

Amy sourced a unique wedding favour of bake your own cookies mix provided in Kilner jars to give a traditional feel from Scarlet Bakes. The three course meal, including a rare roast beef fillet main, was catered for by E&M Events who provided a first class service and compered the reception which took place under a majestic marquee provided by the diligent, customer focussed Events and Tents of Grantham. The extremely tasty wedding cake was produced by Debbie James in Peterborough. Within the marquee, thanks to Mick Thurlby and his team, was the classic Citroen mobile bar that regular visitors to the Crown Hotel in Stamford will be familiar with, serving ales provided by Will Fry of the Tobie Norris, Stamford. The wine for the day was sourced via Adnams of Stamford and champagne from Virgin Wines. The music in the evening came courtesy of the seven piece live band A Girl Called Sue who had the guests dancing the night away.

Mr & Mrs Roberts

HoneymoonFollowing a family buffet and cricket match on the following day, Amy and Matt set off to Heathrow for what promised to be a superb honeymoon. Following two flights across to Kuala Lumpur where the couple stayed for two nights, they took the short hop across the Malacca Straits to the rainforest island of Langkawi. Amy and Matt stayed for ten nights of luxury at the Datai in the northern part of the island living in the forest but with easy access to a superb private beach and surrounded by a huge variety of wildlife from the majestic Serpent Eagles hunting in the sea to the cheeky Macaque Monkeys swinging in the trees. On the way home the couple stayed for three nights in Dubai at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and took in the sights and sounds of the Emirate which was in sharp contrast to the previous few days in the tropics.

Moving ForwardsSince the big day the couple have moved house and had the happy news that Amy is expecting their first child.

Rustic, Vintage and Romantic are the most requested themes for this and next season’s Brides, with the chair covers, sashes, table centre pieces and favours all reflecting this popular trend. Flower arrangements, including the bridal flowers are not, in general, as structured as they have been with many Brides choosing a more natural look with hand tied bouquets including such flowers as large bloom peonies, spray roses, sweet peas and anemones to name but a few. To go with this romantic look, vintage birdcages in ivory or white, with complementary flowers cascading from within the cage, can look really stunning.

Vintage looking vases in white or pastel shades, again with natural, looser arrangements are also very popular this year.

The most requested colours for the remainder of 2012 and 2013 are Cadbury’s purple, ivory, coral and the full range of pastels. Turquoise and all shades of blue are also still popular as is dusky pink. Chair covers with sashes to match the colour scheme in taffeta or organza complete the look. Sashes can either be tied in the traditional bow with perhaps a single bloom placed in the bow, draped with a diamante buckle or even tied at the back of the chair with one coloured organza and one ivory taffeta sash which can give a very stylish look.

Let us take you there in style

Your last journey as a singleton and your first as a couple

Wedding transport is a very important part of the wedding

day. It is the last journey a daughter will take with her

father as a single person and her first journey as a married

woman with her husband. The company employed to

make these all important journeys should be experienced

and professional in their duties and the vehicles they offer

should be fit for purpose.

It does no harm to shop around, we all do it and we like to

feel we have got the best deal. This is probably your first

time at this and it may seem a bit of a minefield.

There is no reason to make a costly mistake if you make

use of the few good pointers

Anyone can hire out their own car for a wedding – wedding

hire is exempt from licensing regulations. Unfortunately,

many individuals see this as a means to a fast buck and will

not have appropriate insurance cover. Some don’t realise

they need it, others don’t care. Don’t be afraid to ask about

their insurance and their experience credentials.

Look for a reputable wedding transport provider with a

range of quality vehicles suitable for weddings. Established

companies will have experience and knowledge regarding

their vehicles, etiquette and chauffeurs attire.

The opportunity to view the car should be available and

any decent company will offer this service to you with

viewings at their premises.

Do not necessarily opt for the lowest price offered to you,

there is usually a reason why a price is low or seems too

good to be true. If you want to compare prices you must

ensure that you are looking for a like for like quote. It’s no

good comparing quotes between a vintage 1920’s car like a

Rolls Royce or a Studebaker against a modern Mercedes

S Class, they are a completely different thing.
