The Role of the MayorThe Mayor is the first citizen of the Borough and the Queen’s Representative here.

The office of Mayor is the highest honour the Local Authority can give to an Elected Member.

The Mayor is recognised as being second only to Royalty and her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant.

The role of the Mayor includes:

• acting as an ambassador for the town;

• promoting the Borough;

• fostering good working relationships with local industry and business;

• supporting local charities and community groups;

• chairing council meetings;

• receiving regional and international visitors;

• representing the Borough at civic functions and engagements;

• encouraging civic pride within our communities.

The Mayor’s Main Aims1. Promote and support the important work carried out in

the Borough which seeks to:

• promote the area as a great place to do business and boost our local economy, welcoming visitors to our town to experience what we have to offer;

• support the most vulnerable individuals in our borough, encouraging health and wellbeing;

2. To support local groups, organisations and individuals over the year, improving their quality of life and providing opportunities that they would not otherwise have.

In order to help achieve these aims, the Mayor will work closely with several Council Services, and three charities - The Great North Air Ambulance, Halo Project and Macmillan Cancer Support. The charities are briefly described in this leaflet.

The Halo Project are a national charity that specialise in supporting BAME victims of abuse, who are at risk, are currently going through, or have been a victim of abuse. They deal with a lot of different forms of abuse covering, but not limited to, child sexual exploitation, modern slavery, grooming and trafficking. They specialise in supporting victims of honour-based violence, forced marriages and female genital mutilation.

Halo provide emotional and culturally appropriate support and advise to victims, so they are free from harm and do not experience an indefensible abuse of human rights which results in abduction, serial rape and in the extreme cases, murder. They support victims at crisis point and help them turn their lives around and live their lives how they want.

The credentials of the team have been specifically sought to ensure the upmost confidentiality, respect and integrity, which are the key values which underpin all our programme activities.

The Halo Project not only provides emotional and practical support to victims, but we also provide a range of activities raising awareness to educate communities and individuals around illegal cultural harms.

The Halo Project believe that all survivors deserve the chance to start fresh and have a life they want, to help survivors do this, they provide them with the tools and knowledge to start their new lives.

All the programmes and workshops developed have been directly for and informed by our survivors, to ensure they are getting the support and knowledge they need to live their lives free from harm.

We also have a 6-bedroom refuge to support our clients with housing and emergency accommodation.

Our community outreach also includes supporting those experiencing hate crimes, we are a nationally recognised 3rd party reporting centre.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) operates three helicopters, 365 days a year, across the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. GNAAS responds to around 1,000 emergency call outs each year. Whether it’s on a fell top, a roadside or in a city centre, GNAAS go wherever they are needed.

As well as cutting-edge medical equipment, they carry specialist trauma doctors and highly trained paramedics.

Having accident and emergency expertise on board means life-saving treatment can begin at the roadside and during the flight to hospital.

The helicopters can reach speeds of up to 190 miles per hour, and can fly in testing conditions including wind, low cloud and rain. This means they are never more than a 15-minute flight from the nearest hospital.

Providing this vital service costs £5.1 million a year. This all has to be raised from the public, as no Government funding is in place.
