THE SECRET TO SUCCESS

IS NO SECRET

WELCOME

STEPHEN LAWSON COLLEGE PRINCIPAL BIMM INSTITUTE BRISTOL

As College Principal, I have the privilege of seeing the student journey from induction to graduation. I say ‘journey’ because students at BIMM are not here merely to listen, learn and regurgitate… and then graduate.

The years you’ll spend here will be a time of intense musical and personal exploration that will prepare you for life in the music industry. I envy your journey.

Far more than the music degree I took in my early 20s, each of BIMM’s courses is a true reflection of the industry as it stands today, and our teaching staff – all of whom are professionals still active in the business – understand better than anyone how the industry works and what you need to do to become a part of it.

I discovered BIMM at the peak of my career in the music business. At 27, I was Editor of Total Guitar magazine – one of Europe’s best-selling music publications – and was asked to deliver a masterclass in music journalism here at BIMM Bristol.

I decided there and then that my future would be in popular music education; the passion of the staff and students, as well as the vocational nature of the teaching, made a massive impression on me. In making the transition from one industry to another I’ve reached what feels like another peak, one that builds on and surpasses my success as a music journalist, enabling me to fully support the next generation of professionals – the best job in the world! I believe the qualities that assisted that transition are at the very core of what’s taught at BIMM, and I look forward to seeing you set off on your own journey to success.

Join us here in the centre of one of the UK’s great music cities and together we’ll make that happen…
