How interesting that God, in His love for His people,

sends the light backto Israel from the heathen after Israel had shared it

with the heathen by their captivity.

Thus wise men came from the east.

“It was not God’s purpose that the light He had given to the patriarchs and prophets should be confined to the Jewish nation. He designed that it should be carried to all parts of the earth. But the Isra-elites misinterpreted the command given them in regard to intermar-rying with other nations. This com-mand was given to guard God’s peo-ple from idolatry. But they made it a wall of separation, a barrier to any communication with other nations [subtracting themselves from wit-nessing]. They regarded themselves as the only people whom God would acknowledge, and looked upon all others as despised by Him. Thus they became narrow in their ideas; and while separating [subtracting] themselves from the heathen, they also separated themselves from God. By walking contrary to His requirements, they were building a wall of separation

“The children of Israel did not walk in the light given them by Him who had been their invisible leader through forty years of wilderness-wandering. Had they cherished the light and practised the gracious les-sons given them by Christ, forming characters in accordance with the principles of truth, they would have retained God’s favor. Great wisdom and knowledge would have been given [added to] them. God would have made them channels through which He could communicate truth, and by which He would have been made a praise in all the earth. Thus His wisdom and matchless love would have been sounded [multi-plied] throughout the world.

“God’s people failed to carry out His purpose, but there were among them those who were faithful and loyal. In the providence of God, the Jews were scattered by captiv-ity through all countries; and during these years of bondage, faith in God was kept alive by faithful witnesses. There were those who would not dis-regard the Sabbath of the Lord, who would not observe heathen festivals. These were persecuted, and many lost their lives, as God’s people al-ways have since the death of Abel. From the time of his expulsion from heaven, Satan has been working on these lines.”*

Variable (Changeable) Stars“Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?

for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”Matthew 2:2

Inspite of the spiritual condi-tion in Israel God sent forth the message of His Son’s birth to them. Some of those who carried the mes-sage were the wise men—men of integrity—who became faithful witnesses to Israel from the east.

The wise men followed a star—a band of angels—to the land of Israel. Did you know stars can teach you how to witness about Christ?

What are variable stars? They shine brightly then dimly, and then brightly again. There are three main types:

1. Pulsating variables change in brightness as they expand and con-tract. (On the night Jesus was born the angels sang the beautiful song of the Saviour’s birth witnessing to the shepherds. They burst forth in brightness and then faded away from them as a variable star.)

The time it takes a pulsating variable to change in brightness as it dims and brightens again is called its periods. Some variables are yel-low supergiants. Many of them pulsate about once a week. Astrono-

mers also call them Cepheid vari-ables because they discovered the first one in the constellation Ce-pheus. The North Star is a Cepheid variable with a period of about four days.

2. Exploding stars burst unexpect-edly with such tremendous energy that they hurl huge amounts of gas into space. (The shepherds were bursting with excitement as they witnessed about Christ’s birth, just like an exploding star.)

One type of exploding star is called a nova, it becomes thousands of times brighter than normal. This brightness may last for a few days or even years, and explode again and again. Nova are thought to result from the explosion of matter that accumulates on the surface of a white dwarf in a binary system. An-other type of exploding star, called a supernova, is thousands of times as bright as an ordinary nova. The most famous supernova occurred in the Milky Way in 1054 and pro-duced a huge cloud of rapidly ex-panding gas called the Crab Nebula. The Crab Nebula is a spinning neu-tron star—a pulsar—at its center.

Subtraction II – Student – Page 5

3. Eclipsing binaries are double stars, such as Algol, that move around each other. The stars move in such a way that one periodically blocks the other’s light. This block-ing reduces the total brightness of the two stars as seen from the earth. Eclipsing binaries are only one kind of double star. (Israel was to be the greater light to the world but the heathen wise men came to share the news of Christ’s birth with Israel. They were like eclisping binaries.)

Binary stars consist of visual binaries and spectroscopic binaries. Either kind may also be an eclipsing binary.

Visual binaries, when seen through a telescope, look like two stars revolving around each other. One revolution of these stars may take 100 years.

Spectroscopic binaries look like single stars, even through a telescope. They are named for the spectroscope, an instrument that astronomers use to identify them. A spectroscope spreads starlight from a binary star into a spectrum, a band of colors similar to a rainbow. Certain features of the spectrum identify the light as coming from a binary. Spectroscopic binaries com-plete their revolutions around each other in a few days or a few months.

Well-known binaries include, Mizar and Alcor, two of the stars in the Big Dipper. They form a double star that can be seen without a tele-scope. Through a telescope, Mizar also appears as a visual binary. In turn, both stars that make up Mizar are spectroscopic binaries. Alcor is also a spectroscopic binary. Thus, Mizar’s four stars and Alcor’s two make up a total of six stars. Such groups of stars are called Multiple stars.

The birth of Christ is like a supernova which is exploding again and again, even in our day, as a briliant witness to every person living on earth.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.”

Psalm 19:1

Algol (AL gahl) also called Beta Persei, is the second bright-est star in the constellation Perseus (PUR see uhs). It appears to be a single star, but it is actually a type of double star called an eclipsing binary. In such a binary, a pair of stars revolve around each other so that one periodically blocks (sub-tracts) the light of the other. The action reduces the brightness of the double star as viewed from the earth.

Algol’s variations in brightness can be seen with the unaided eye.

About every 3 days, Algol loses 2/3 of its brightness in a period of 5 hours. In another 5 hours, it returns to its normal magnitude of 2.3. (See the chart.)

The distance between the cen-ters of the two stars is about 7 mil-lion miles (11 million kilometers). One star has a surface temperature of about 22,000˚F (12,000˚C). The second, fainter star is only 1/3 as hot. A third, more distant star be-longs to the Algol system. It orbits the other 2 stars, but it does not take part in the eclipses.

Subtraction II – Student – Page 7

Algol teaches you the lesson how God desired Israel to share their light with the world. He finally had to send them into captivity to accomplish His purposes. From the wise men’s personal study of the Scriptures and perhaps example they learned of Christ. So this lesser light—wise men (G5)—gives more light that Israel (B8) should have been giving as “God’s people” to the Romans and all the world.

The distant star in the Algol system which does not take part in the eclipse calls to mind the few faithful in Israel that recognized Christ when He came. How does Algol illustrate integrity?

The pair is 105 light years away. Algol is composed of a B8 star in mutual orbit with a G5 star. Most of the time the pair appears at a magnitude of 2.1; every 2.87 days it dims to magnitude 3.3 for 10 hours as the G5 star crosses in front of the B8 star.

Illustration

Perseus is a constellation of the north-ern sky. It lies between the constella-tion of Auriga and Cassiopeia. Mirfak, the brightest star in Perseus, is larger than the sun. Perseus contains the binary star Algol.

Double (two) and Multiple (two or more) Stars

The Big Diper forms part of the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The cup forms the hindquarters of the bear, the handle forms the tail, and fainter stars outline the head and legs. The star Mizar, at the center of the handle, has a nearby companion star named Alcor. These 2 stars have been used for hundreds of years as a test for keen eyesight. Viewed through a telescope, Mizar itself is a double star.

Another depiction of these stars is called the Plough. To some the bowl of the dipper forms the blade; the handle is a team of draft horses. To others the stars consti-tute just the handle of a plough. One person calls it the Heavenly Plough.

We are reminded by multiple stars traveling through space, such as Mizar, and its companion Alcor, of the wise men, also men of integrity traveling to Jerusalem, and onward to Bethlehem—shining as stars in the sky to Israel.

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.”

Seven means spiritual perfec-tion. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). Seven also reminds us of the perfect way God announced the birth of Jesus. He sent kings from the east to tell of the King of kings.

“The wise men from the East were philosophers. They belonged to a large and influential class that included men of noble birth, and comprised much of the wealth and learning of their nation. Among these were many who imposed on the credulity [easiness to believe] of the people. Others were upright men who studied the indications of Providence in nature, and who were honored for their integrity and wisdom. Of this character were the wise men who came to Jesus.”*

See how many words you can make from the words wise men. Write them on the lines below.

The Numerical Hebrew Alphabet – Aleph–Yohd Bet“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1

The numbers and letters of the Hebrew alphabet can teach many lessons. As we continue learning subtraction we will learn about some of these! God created this world in six days and rested on the seventh day. Six whole days filled with the knowlege of God. In a life time you can-not learn all of it. The wise men caught glimpses of information from the Scriptures and from nature about the Saviour’s birth and went seeking HIM. You too can look for knowlege in the Bible and nature about numbers and subtraction, and be like the wise men—seekers.*

1. The physical world is represented by the number six—the number of days in which it was created—but Creation was not finished until there was a SEV-ENTH day, a day of rest from the mun-dane, a day of involvement with God. The SABBATH remains the eternal reminder that this world cannot endure unless it is continuously permeated by the spiritual aspects represented by the SEVEN, which is symbolic of spiritual perfection.

2. The SABBATH coun-teracts the danger of being submerged in our earthly labor. Man is constsantly struggling to gain mastery over his environment during the weekdays. But upon the SEVENTH day, he ceas-es working and rests, relying completely on the Divine Provider.

3. The SEVENTH day is a fountain of blessing and holiness. It is like a signet attached to a ring after its completion.

4. SEVEN tells about the six physical di-rections of expansion—east, west, north, south, up, down, and plus one, represent-ing its own individual focal point.

5. The symbol for SEVEN in Hebrew signi-fies the spirituality of the SEVENTH day rest. This is seen in the curved top of the letter, whose head extends to both sides so that it faces backward and forward, indicat-ing its radiating effect on the last days of the preceding week and on the new days of the next week. It also points up and down which tells about heavens blessings coming down to bless man on the SEVENTH day SABBATH.

5. The significance of SEVEN is also reflected in its mathematical proper-ties. Within the common decimal meth-od—the following set of properties is common to one and SEVEN: (a) neither of these numbers can be expressed as the product of any two whole numbers other than itself and one; (b) neither is a prime factor of any other number between one and ten. This combination of properties can be found in no other number between one and ten. As such each of these numbers represents the Oneness of God and the spiritual les-sons He has instilled in Creation.

6. Each SABBATH day is a reminder of the better world to be enjoyed by man.

Hebrew Scriptures

“The light of God is ever shin-ing amid the darkness of heathen-ism. As these magi studied the star-ry heavens, and sought to fathom the mystery hidden in their bright paths, they beheld the glory of the Creator. Seeking clearer knowl-edge, they turned to the Hebrew Scriptures. In their own land were treasured prophetic writings that predicted the coming of a divine teacher. Balaam belonged to the ma-gicians, though at one time a proph-et of God; by the Holy Spirit he had foretold the prosperity of Israel and the appearing of the Messiah; and his prophecies had been handed down by tradition from century to century. But in the Old Testament the Saviour’s advent was more clearly revealed. The magi learned with joy that His coming was near, and that the whole world was to be filled with a knowledge of the glory of the Lord.”*

Vertical Subtraction – Looking Up

The word vertical means directly overhead. Our greatest physical lights are overhead—the sun, other stars, moon, asteroids, comets, and meteors. The wise men were searching in the night among these lights in the heavens to learn more about the true God. They then turned to the Hebrew Scriptures to check further. As Christians, we also turn upward or overhead to seek God in heaven when in prayer or thought. Then we check our lives with the written Word.

Notice how the larger number in a problem is always put on top showing more value. As you do the following vertical subtraction prob-lems, think how things of greater value are in heaven and how the things of earth are of lesser value. May our thoughts dwell in heavenly places. When subtracting vertically, be careful to keep digits of the same place value directly below one another. When borrowing 1 from a digit and add-ing it to the digit to the right, you are adding 10 units to the right-hand digit.

Example of Borrowing

Subtraction in the Mind

Wise Men From the East

*The Youth’s Instructor 10-5-1899

“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament.”

Daniel 12:3

“These men were men of noble birth, learned in art and science. They were astrologers, and in the heavens they had seen the glory of God. But they had not a full knowl-edge of the Author of the wonders they studied. The magi of the East varied in honor and integrity, some sinking to a low level, and using their knowledge of science to impose on the credulity of others for their own selfish ends; while others refused thus to dishonor themselves and deceive the people. The latter class were noble men, who followed the indications of God’s providence as revealed in the heavens and earth.”*

Another way to describe noble men is to use the word integrity. The wise men were noble men of integrity.

Wise Men are Noble Menand

Men of Integrity

Nobleness

Page 37: Your Own School Program Subtraction IIpathlightsjr.com/02-Math/06-Subtraction-IIA-S.pdf · Page 173 Page 174 Page 175 Page 176 Page 179 ... to shine upon us; That thy way may be

Subtraction II – Student – Page 28

One way to subtract num-bers in the mind is to first subtract those digits having the greatest place value, then those having next greatest, until you come to the one’s place. To be a noble person, or one with integrity, all the bad charac-ter traits must be subtracted from the life.

Example

Problem w = 752 – 438Think: 752 –400 = 352 352 – 30 = 322 322 – 8 = 314

Sometimes mental subtrac-tion can be even easier by adding or subtracting a number from both the minuend and the subtrahend to make a more simple number to work with. Notice in the next exam-ples more than one way to get the answer.

To continue to be noble or have integrity, add good character traits to yourself. If you only subtract, what might happen? (See Matthew 12:43-45 or Luke 11:24-26.)

Color the wise man.

“The just manwalketh in his integrity.”

Proverbs 20:7

“The integrityof the upright shall guide them.”

Proverbs 11:3

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind,

and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”Acts 17:11

Page 38: Your Own School Program Subtraction IIpathlightsjr.com/02-Math/06-Subtraction-IIA-S.pdf · Page 173 Page 174 Page 175 Page 176 Page 179 ... to shine upon us; That thy way may be

Subtraction II – Student – Page 29

Sometimes it is better to subtract from the minuend and the subtrahend. Do not forget, if you subtract from one, you must subtract

the same number from the other. If you add to one, you must add the same number to the other.

Example

Problem i = 296 – 58Solution I: 296 is just 4 less than 300 Add 4 to 296 and to 58 i = 300 – 62 i = 238

Solution II: 58 is 2 less than 60 Add 2 to 58 and to 296 i = 298 – 60 i = 238

Example

Problem s – 401 = 342Solution I: 401 is 1 more than 400 subtract 1 from 401 and 342 s = 400 – 341 s = 59

Solution II: 342 is just 2 more than 340 Subtract 2 from both numbers s = 399 – 340 s = 59

1. Subtract the digits in order of place value from the greatest to the least.

W. 594 – 344 = 852 – 238 = 955 – 461 = 594 – 486 =

2. Make the work simple by adding a number(s) to each one.

3. Make the work simple by subtracting a number(s) from each one.

S. 53 – 37 = 204 – 57 = 562 – 303 = 827 – 88 =

4. In the following problem use whatever method works best for you. Check your answers by using addition.

E. 48 – 29 = 84 – 39 = 87 – 33 = 95 – 23 = 86 – 18 = 44 – 38 = 73 – 64 = 53 – 34 = M. 68 – 39 = 89 – 78 = 52 – 27 = 64 – 48 = 286 – 52 = 167 – 52 = 293 – 73 = 143 – 92 =

1. Eastern tradition tells us there were twelve wise men who came to Bethlehem. Many pictures show three (probably because of the three types of gifts). We do not know for sure how many wise men there were. We do know they studied the starry heavens and the Hebrew Scriptures.

One verse they read was, “I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth” (Numbers 24:17).

“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ

is in you, except ye be reprobates?”

If their trip took 3 weeks and they traveled 133 miles (212.80 kilometers) the first week, how many more miles (kilometers) did they still need to go after the first week?

2. How far in two weeks would the wise men still need to travel if they traveled 150 miles (240 kilometers) in the first week?

How does each planet differ from the sun in size? Are any of them close to the sun’s size?

The angel star was the “lesser light” (moon) to reflect the “greater light”—Christ (sun)

to the wise men. Let us be noble and have integrity as we reflect

the “Sun of Righteousness.”

“...The moon and stars do not refuse to shine because they have not the brilliant light of the sun. Every person has his own peculiar sphere and vocation. Those who make the most of their God-given opportunities will return to the Giver, in their improvement, an interest proportionate to the intrusted capital.”* The wise men were just such men of integrity. In their gifts to the Christ-Child they returned interest proportionate to the riches that had been intrusted to them.

The moon returns its “interest”by reflecting the borrowed light of the sun.

What are you returning to God?

Remind1. When straightening the book shelves, think about the wise men studying the Hebrew scrolls.

2. When seeing a jet trail overhead in the sky, that can call your mind to the star the wise men saw in the sky.

3. When considering the difference in the size of a pea or bean and the bowl they are served in, you can be reminded of the difference in size and glory of the sun and moon.

4. When noticing someone who appears to have a noble bearing, wait to see if he also has integrity.

ReflectRead and meditate on these thoughts.

How do stars produce energy? They change hydrogen into helium through a series of nuclear reac-tions. As a result of the reactions, a helium nucleus is created out of 4 hydrogen nuclei. When this nu-clear fusion takes place, energy is released. A similar process occurs when a hydrgen bomb explodes.

The Scriptures have such ex-plosive energy that its truth chang-es lives and inspires people to do great things as the wise men dem-onstrated to us.

Very large telescopes help people study the stars today. Who was the first observer using the “spyglass?” Galileo Galilei!

He once said, “The greatest astonishment is this—I have ob-served four planets which have their orbits around Jupiter.” These were later discovered to be moons of Jupi-ter. This man went on to say, “I give infinite thanks that I alone have been the first observer of amazing things.”

You can use your own “spy-glass”—binoculers to study the heavens at night like the wise men looked up to enjoy “amazing things.”

“Praise ye him, sun and moon:praise him, all ye stars of light.”

there shall come a Star out of Jacob and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.”

Numbers 24:17

“The wise men had seen a mysterious light in the heavens upon that night when the glory of God flooded the hills of Bethlehem. As the light faded, a luminous star appeared, and lingered in the sky. It was not a fixed star nor a planet, and the phenomenon excited the keenest interest. That star was a distant company of shining angels, but of this the wise men were ig-norant. Yet they were impressed that the star was of special import to them. They consulted priests and philosophers, and searched the scrolls of the ancient records. The prophecy of Balaam had declared, ‘There shall come a Star out of Ja-cob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel.’ Could this strange star have been sent as a harbinger* of the

Promised One? The magi had wel-comed the light of heaven-sent truth; now it was shed upon them in brighter rays. Through dreams they were instructed to go in search of the newborn Prince.

“As by faith Abraham went forth at the call of God, ‘not know-ing whither he went’ (Hebrews 11:8); as by faith Israel followed the pillar of cloud to the Promised Land, so did these Gentiles go forth to find the promised Saviour. The East-ern country abounded in precious things, and the magi did not set out empty-handed. It was the custom to offer presents as an act of hom-age to princes or other personages of rank, and the richest gifts the land afforded were borne as an offering to Him in whom all the families of the earth were to be blessed. It was necessary to journey by night in order to keep the star in view; but the travelers beguiled the hours by repeating traditional sayings and prophetic utterances concerning the One they sought. At every pause for rest they searched the prophecies; and the conviction deepened that they were divinely guided. While they had the star before them as an outward sign, they had also the inward evidence of the Holy Spirit, which was impressing their hearts, and inspiring them with hope. The journey, though long, was a happy one to them.”* *The Desire of Ages 60

The Numerical Hebrew Alphabet—Chet“...God is the strength of my heart....”

Psalm 73:26

The Hebrew number eight as a numeral is the super abundant number as it means “one who abounds in strength.” The wise men were men of integrity and strength.

The number eight is involved in various aspects of the Temple service:• The eight holy vestments of the High Priest (Exodus 28).• Eight varieties of spices, four for the oil of ointment, and four for the in-cense.• Eight poles, for carrying the vessels in the Sanctuary, two each for the Ark, Table, Golden Altar, and Copper Altar.•Seven days were occupied with the consecration of the priesthood, and on the eighth day they entered upon their work (Levitius 8:33).• The Feast of Tabernacles lasted eight days.• You might like to find other eights in the Sanctuary.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets,

and stonest themwhich are sent unto thee,

how often would I have gathered thy children together,

even as a hen gathereth her chickensunder her wings, and ye would not.”

Matthew 23:37

“...Behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.”

Matthew 2:1

“They [wise men] have reached the land of Israel, and are descend-ing the Mount of Olives, with Je-rusalem in sight, when, lo, the star that has guided them all the weary way rests above the temple, and after a season fades from their view. With eager steps they press onward, confidently expecting the Messiah’s birth to be the joyful burden of every tongue. But their inquiries are in vain. Entering the holy city, they re-pair to the temple. To their amaze-ment they find none who seem to have a knowledge of the newborn King. Their questions call forth no expressions of joy, but rather of sur-prise and fear, not unmingled with contempt.

“The priests are rehearsing traditions. They extol their religion and their own piety, while they de-nounce the Greeks and Romans as heathen, and sinners above others. The wise men are not idolaters, and in the sight of God they stand far higher than do these, His professed worshipers; yet they are looked upon by the Jews as heathen. Even among the appointed guardians of the Holy Oracles their eager ques-tionings touch no chord of sympa-thy.”*

We are told: “The children of Israel did not walk in the light given them by Him who had been their invisible leader through forty years of wilderness-wandering. Had they cherished the light and practiced the gracious lessons given them by Christ, forming characters in accor-dance with the principles of truth, they would have retained God’s favor. Great wisdom and knowledge would have been given them. God would have made them channels through which He could communi-cate truth, and by which He would have been made a praise in all the earth. Thus His wisdom and match-less love would have been sounded through the world.”*

Wise men are a reflection of Him.

ReviewPlace II

The star that led the wise men was to represent Jesus. “...I am...the bright and Morning Star” (Revela-tion 22:16). The angels formed this star showing how they represented the Light—Jesus. The priests and rulers were also called to represent the Light to the wise men and to be like the “Star” and shine in the darkness of this world. Instead they were like the fallen star (Satan) whose light went out. “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the Morning!” (Isaiah 14:12). Think of the difference between Christ, a shinning Star, and Satan, the fallen star, whose light went out. You can be like the angel star and not like Satan, the fallen star. The differ-ence is the Light!

by study, by observation, by reflection.

You cannot meet the mind of God unless you put to use every power.

The mental faculties will strengthen and develop if you will go to work in

the fear of God, in humility, and with earnest prayer.”

Horizontal SubtractionWhen looking horizontally at a light it does not seem as bright

as when overhead. But is there a difference? It is the same light! Most of the Jews did not recognize the bright Light among them—Jesus.

When the wise men came looking for that Light the leaders were not aware of Him.

F. 336 – 215 = _____ 462 – 242 = _____ 359 – 257 = _____

Example

249 – 238 = 11 Think: 8 is 1 less than 9. 3 is 1 less than 4. 2 from 2 is zero. The difference is 11.

1. Do the following problems. Find the difference! Remember to subtract ones from ones, tens from tens, hundreds from hundreds, and so forth.

“I saw Satan planting his banner in the households of those who profess

to be God’s chosen ones; but those who are walking in the light should be able to discern

Example

Think: • 7 is less than 9. • Borrow 1 from the ten’s place and 3 1 5 1 add to the 7–(17). 4 6 7 • Subtract 9 from 17 = 8. – 3 7 9 • 5 is less than 7. 0 8 8 • Borrow 1 from the hundred’s place and add to the 5–(15). 3 15 17 • Subtract 7 from 15 = 8. 4 6 7 – 3 7 9 = 8 8 • 3 from 3 = 0. • The difference is 88.

3. A way to check if you are sharing your light is that others are being added to the faith. The best way to check subtraction is by using addition. Subtract the subtrahend from the minuend, and the difference is left. Add the difference to the subtrahend; the sum should be the same as the minuend.

Solve and check these problems horizontally.

ReviewValue

Place III

God often brings information to men in unusual ways. He values men and desires to attract them to Himself. He brought wise men from a hea-then country to the rulers to tell of the newborn King. How carefully we must be to pray that we will recognize God’s voice speaking to us through others. God often uses man sharing with man (horizontal—side by side). God estimates man of great value. We are told, “The Lord is disappointed when His people place a low estimate upon themselves. He desires His chosen heritage to value themselves according to the price He has placed upon them. God wanted them, else He would not have sent His Son on such an expensive errand to redeem them. He has a use for them, and He is well pleased when they make the very highest demands upon Him, that they may glorify His name. They may expect large things if they have faith in His promises.”*

The courses (body) of priests remind me of cells. Your body is made up of cells. Each one has a different shape depending on its job. Their shapes are: round, oval, spiral rods, long, and many other shapes. Inside each cell are many parts that make a whole cell, like one course of priests, is made of many people. Each has a job and each does that job. Some priests cared for the sac-rifices, some ______________, some ___________, and some ___________ ______ ____________. The cells in your body carry oxygen and food; some keep the waste cleaned up; some keep bones and muscles strong; and some act as messengers; and some do other things.

Each cell helps make up tis-sue, and tissue makes up organs, and organs make up systems. Each cell must work correctly to keep the whole body in health and in proper working order.

1. All through Bible history God has had lights or lives which shine be-fore the world. Adam’s light shone for 930 years. Adam’s son, Seth, was a bright light for God for 912 years. How much longer than Seth did Adam have an opportunity to shine?

2. Another light was Enoch who was taken to heaven after he lived on earth for three hundred and sixty-five years. His son Methuselah, the oldest man recorded in the Bible, let his light shine on earth nine hun-dred and sixty-nine years. Methu-selah sparkled for God how much longer on earth than his father?

3. Noah’s life illuminated the earth six hundred years before the Flood. After the Flood his brightness was only seen for three hundred and fifty years. How many years longer did he shine before the Flood than after the Flood?

Can you think of other bright lightsin the Old Testament?

Our sun is alone in space, but many stars have one or more suns nearby as companions. Remember, double stars are called binaries.

Stars are rarely entirely alone within a galaxy. Most are concen-trated in groups called clusters. Globular clusters are big and round. Galactic clusters are small and formless.

God most often has more than one witness to an event just as stars are usually grouped together with one another.

Wise Men Have Integrity —3 Stories to Read

1. Julius Drusus, a Roman tri-bune, had a house that in many places, it lay exposed to the view of the neighborhood. A person came and offered that for five talents he would so alter it that it should not be liable to that inconvenience. “I will give thee ten talents,” said Dru-sus, “if thou canst make my house conspicuous in every room of it, that so all the city may behold in what manner I lead my life.” —Arvine

2. During the American Revolu-tion, while General Reed was Presi-dent of Congress, the British Com-missioners offered him a bribe of ten thousand guineas to desert the cause of his country. His reply was “Gentlemen, I am poor, very poor; but your King is not rich enough to buy me.”

3. Among the Alps alone are found men rustic without being ferocious, civilized without being corrupted. The following trait is as characteristic as it is singular. Frantz went one evening to Gas-pard, who was mowing his field.

“My friend,” said he, “the time is come to put up this hay. You know there is a dispute about the mead-ow, to whom it belongs, you or me; to decide the question I have as-sembled together the appointed judges at Salenche; so come with me tomorrow and state your claims.” “You see, Frantz,” answered Gas-pard, “that I have cut the grass; it is therefore, absolutely necessary that I should put it up tomorrow; I cannot leave it.” “And I cannot send away the judges, who have chosen the day themselves. Besides, we must know to whom the meadow be-longs before it is cleared.” They de-bated some time. At length Gaspard said to Frantz, “Go to Salenche, tell the judges my reasons as well as your own for claiming the meadow, and then I need not go myself.” So it was agreed. Frantz pleaded both for and against himself, and, to the best of his power, gave in his own claims as well as those of Gaspard. When the judges had pronounced their sentence he returned to his friend, saying, “the meadow is yours; the sentence is in thy favor, and I wish you joy.” Frantz and Gaspard ever afterwards remained friends. —Paxton Hood

ResearchHerod—Wise Men

9 9 9 Nine – 9 9 9

The number nine reminds us of divine completeness. Jesus was coming to earth to give a com-plete picture of what God was like to man. So, in divine wisdom, the wise men carried the last public an-nouncement of the birth of Jesus. It would be years before John the Bap-tist made the next public announce-ment of Jesus’ work.

Did the Jewish leaders listen? Did Herod?

“When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.”

“The arrival of the magi was quickly noised throughout Jerusa-lem. Their strange errand created an excitement among the people, which penetrated to the palace of King Herod. The wily Edomite was aroused at the intimation of a pos-sible rival. Countless murders had stained his pathway to the throne. Being of alien blood, he was hated

by the people over whom he ruled. His only security was the favor of Rome. But this new Prince had a higher claim. He was born to the kingdom.

“Herod suspected the priests of plotting with the strangers to excite a popular tumult and unseat him from the throne. He concealed his mistrust, however, determined to thwart their schemes by supe-rior cunning. Summoning the chief priests and the scribes, he ques-tioned them as to the teaching of their sacred books in regard to the place of the Messiah’s birth.”*

The Numerical Hebrew Alphabet—Tet

The Hebrew symbol for nine teaches a lesson. On the right side it por-trays a man with his head bowed in humility while on the left side it de-picts a person standing up straight and tall in pride. This shows how Jesus came in humility to this earth to help prideful man.

The Hebrew symbol for nine also speaks with the curving in-wards on its right side which shows a person who keeps within the knowledge of his char-ity that only God will see and reward him accordingly. He will not show outward of his charity.

The numeral nine is the last of the single numer-als, beyond this there are combinations of digits. It, therefore, marks the end. It is the number of final-ity or judgment. But nine is also three times three, and three signifies Divine completeness. In this les-son one sees how God gave through Jesus the hope for the coming judgment!

Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruits of the Spirit, which are nine. They are love, joy, peace, longsuf-fering, gentleness, good-ness, faith, meekness, and self-control or the character that all should develop on earth. Display-ing these and increasing in them, brings the believer the happiness here which shows pictures of heaven.

“...Fear God, and give glory [show Christ’s character to the world] to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and wor-ship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of wa-ters” (Revelation 14:7).

Inquiry

*The Desire of Ages 62

“And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes

of the people together, he demanded of them

where Christ should be born.”

Matthew 2:4

“This inquiry from the usurper of the throne, and made at the re-quest of strangers, stung the pride of the Jewish teachers. The indiffer-ence with which they turned to the rolls of prophecy enraged the jealous tyrant. He thought them trying to conceal their knowledge of the mat-ter. “Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

“And he sent them to Bethle-hem, and said, Go and search dili-gently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also” (Matthew 2:7-8).

“Herod now invited the magi to a private interview. A tempest of wrath and fear was raging in his heart, but he preserved a calm ex-terior, and received the strangers courteously. He inquired at what time the star had appeared, and professed to hail with joy the inti-mation of the birth of Christ. He bade his visitors, ‘Search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.’ So saying, he dismissed them to go on their way to Bethle-hem.”* *The Desire of Ages 62

The word Bethlehem means “house of bread.” How fitting that the “Bread of Life” was born in the “House of Bread”—Beth-lehem. An earlier name was Ephrath (or Ephratah) which means “fertility.” The hills and valleys around Bethlehem were covered with vines, fig trees, olive groves, and grain. It was referred to as the breadbasket of Judea. Here, from “little” Bethlehem, came many famous people.

Herod was afraid that his throne would be taken from him. He was not a man of integrity. Many of his own family members had died at his hand. Herod did not understand that Christ came to set up a spiritual kingdom.

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (I Corinthians 2:14).

Thinking wrong thoughts is borrowing trouble. Herod had wrong thoughts—he was jealous. He began to think:

“Had One been born who had a better right to rule? Was he to be superseded? Why had he not heard of this wonderful event?”*

This led him to make unwise choices. God does not want us to think wrong thoughts but borrow only the best.

When there is not enough in the ones’ place, we borrow from the tens’ place. See the example below.

Borrowing From MoreThan One Place

The Holy Spirit can give us right thoughts. The Word also puts good thoughts in our mind. Herod could have had both of these to help him be rid of his jealousy.

“Charity...

Thinketh no evil.”I Corinthians 13:5

“Jealousy, envy, pride,and uncharitable feelings,

self-righteousness,easily provoked,

thinking evil,harshness, cold,unsympathetic,

these are the attributes

ReviewQuestions?

Place II

“It was in harmony with Herod’s jealous nature to be trou-bled over news of this character [a baby King born];

• but why should the leading men among the Jews be so perplexed and terrified?

• Had they studied and explained the Scriptures in vain?

• Why were they not intelligent in regard to this great event foretold by prophecy, which meant so much to them?

• They had traced down the chro-nology, and knew that this was the time when the Messiah should appear. Why, then, were they so alarmed?...

“The Jewish rulers were in ignorance of the coming of the Just One, because they had not been making ready for Him. They had been separating from God by wicked works. The positions in the service of the priesthood were filled by men wholly unfitted for the work—men who had not hesitated to stoop to falsehood and even murder to gain the coveted honor. They were not

ready for Christ’s coming. They had not heard the angel’s message, ‘Be-hold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.’ They had not heard the song of the heavenly host, because they were estranged from God. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned. The Lord could not enlighten them; for so great was the darkness surrounding them that they would not have made a right use of the light.”*

The word horizontal reminds us of being flat or level. When we are flat or level we could be in prayer seeking God’s will. Another meaning for level is even-tempered, calm, serene, peaceful and dispassionate. This does not describe Herod or the leaders, but rather men of integrity like the wise men.

ReviewThe Rulers

Place III

“The priests and rulers be-gan to ask themselves what these things meant. The shepherds had borne witness regarding the visit of the angels; now men from the far East bore the tidings, ‘We have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.’ Men of another nation and faith were the first to herald the advent of the Messiah. If the report of the wise men were true, they, the rulers, stood in an unenviable position before their own people; for they had been passed by, while strangers were enlightened.

“Herod was surprised that the Jewish rabbis—men looking upon themselves as favored above all other people—should apparently be in darkness, while those they termed heathen had received a sign from heaven that the King had been born. He was filled with perplexity. Why had the wise men made the long journey to Jerusalem with the inquiry, ‘Where is he that is born King of the Jews?’ Had a king been born? Making an effort to appear gratified by the news, though his heart burned with jealousy at the mention of a rival, Herod gathered the chief priests and scribes

1. The Waldensians were people of integrity. They, like the wise men, were level and pure and not jealous and deceitful like the leaders of the Roman church and Jewish church. It is believed the Waldensian church was started by Peter Waldo about A.D. 1160. It remained God’s voice in the wilderness until about 1527 when changes came into that church. How long was the Walden-sian church’s purity maintained?

2. Israel had a history of serving God (level) and then of falling away from Him. King David began his reign over Israel in 1048 B.C. He was a level king. King Solomon began his reign in 1015 B.C. His younger years were spent in serv-ing God but later he left God, and then, in his old age, he finally came back to Him. The kingdom of Israel was divided at his death in 975 B.C. Rehoboam became king of Judah in 975 B.C. How long was it from the beginning of King David’s reign to the division of Israel?

RemainderWisemen Came

From the East, to Jerusalem, to Bethlehem

The town of Bethlehem was not only fertile with an abundance of food, but many important people came from it. The most important was named: “...Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). If only the priests, people, and Herod had been wisemen with integ-rity, and ready to receive Him as were the wisemen from the east.

’Tis Shining StillA beautiful star arose one night,Divinely it shone with purest light; Its wonderful rays the wisemen ledTo find the Saviour’s lowly bed.

They knew by the word of truth divine,’Twas time that the guiding star should shine; They follow’d its light which shone afar—’Twas Christ, “The bright and morning Star.”

We’ll follow its light, like those of old,The “Light of the World,” by seers foretold; We’ll follow His light till we shall comeTo perfect rest in heav’n, my home.

’Tis shining still, ’tis shining still,That beautiful star, o’er plain and hill;’Tis shining still, ’tis shining still,Salvation’s star of God’s good will.
