STEPS TO ACHIEVING YOUR ELIGIBILITY

Freshmen and Sophomores Must:

Start planning now by working hard to get the best grades possible.

Access and print your high school’s List of NCAA Courses at www.eligibilitycenter.org by clicking “Resources” at the top of the screen.

Take classes that are on your high school’s List of NCAA Courses. The NCAA Eligibility Center will only use approved courses to certify your initial eligibility.

Register at www.eligibilitycenter.org at the beginning of your sophomore year.

If you fall behind, use summer school sessions before your senior year to catch up.

Juniors Must:

Register to take the ACT, SAT or both and use the NCAA Eligibility Center code “9999” as a score recipient.

Double check to make sure that you are taking courses that are approved on your high school’s List of NCAA Courses.

Request that your high school counselor send an official transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center after completing your junior year.

Take the ACT or SAT as many times as

necessary.

Check your List of NCAA Courses.

Graduate on time (eight semesters).

Continue to take college-preparatory

courses.

What Is A Core Course? Graduation credits in English, math, science, social

studies, foreign language, comparative religion, and philosophy

Regular academic level In math, Algebra 1 or higher

Taught by a qualified instructor

What are Nontraditional Courses?

Courses taught through: The Internet (online or virtual); Distance learning; Independent study; Individualized instruction; Correspondence; Computer software programs; or Other similar means.

Things to Consider before Taking Nontraditional Courses

Must include ongoing access between the instructor and student.

Must have a defined time period for completion (i.e., six weeks).

Should be clearly identified as nontraditional courses on the high school transcript.

Must be four-year college preparatory and need to be comparable in length, content and rigor to courses taught in a traditional classroom setting.

Core-Course Time Limitation

Division I 9th Grade - (4) years or eight (8) semesters to complete core-

courses.

Core-courses taken after (8) semesters will not be counted.

Graduate “On Time”

Division II All core-courses completed can be used until you enroll full time at

a college or university.

Academic Requirements

Graduate from high school.

Complete NCAA-approved courses.

Earn a minimum required core-course grade-point average (GPA).

Earn a required SAT or ACT sum score.

NEW Division I Academic Requirements

High School

NCAA Division I

There are new requirements for college-bound student-athletes enrolling full time at an NCAA Division I college or university on or after August 1, 2016.

Three Possible Outcomes

Full qualifier = Receive Scholarship, Practice, and Compete

Academic redshirt = Receive Scholarship, Practice, and No Competition

Non-qualifier = NO SCHOLARSHIP, NO PRACTICE, and NO COMPETITION

NCAA Division I Full Qualifier: 16 core courses:

4 years English; 3 years math at Algebra I level or higher; 2 years natural or physical science 1 year additional English, math or science; 2 years social science; and 4 years additional from areas above or foreign

language, philosophy or comparative religion

Minimum GPA and Sliding Scale for Competition: Minimum GPA of 2.300 in 16 required core courses. 2.300 core-course GPA requires 900 SAT or 75 sum ACT

Core-course progression: 10 core courses before 7th semester or senior year of high school 7 of the 10 core courses must be English, math, or science. Courses are locked in and will not be used after the 7th semester

Division I Academic Redshirt: 16 core courses in the following areas:

4 years English, 3 years math at Algebra I level or higher, 2 years natural or physical science (one lab if offered by any school attended); 1 year additional English, math or natural/physical science; 2 years social science; and 4 years additional from areas above or foreign

language, philosophy or comparative religion.

Minimum GPA and Sliding Scale for Competition: Minimum GPA of 2.000 in 16 required core courses. 2.000 core-course GPA requires 1020 SAT or 86 sum ACT

After the first term is complete, you must successfully complete nine semester hours or eight quarter hours in each term at to continue to practice for the remainder of the year.

A student-athlete will be allowed to practice and receive athletics aid in first academic year if he or she:

Completes the required 16 core courses; and Earns a minimum GPA of 2.000, with corresponding

test score on the partial qualifier sliding scale.

Taking the ACT and/or SAT Be sure to enter the “9999” code when registering for the

ACT or SAT. This requests for your official test scores to be sent directly to the

NCAA Eligibility Center.

Test scores on high school transcripts will not be used.
