ForewordAssalam o Alaikum dear brothers and sisters! Before beginning with the Dua book’s formal contents, we considered it appropriate to take a moment to explain the purpose behind writing this book. We’ve often felt in our lives the dearth of Islamic literature that can really reach out to us, the university-going part of the population, in a manner that is both accessible and informative. So Allah bestowed His Mercy on some of the brothers and sisters at the LUMS Religious Society and they took it unto themselves to at least begin working on the publication of Islamic literature that is tailor-made to suit the needs of University students, and took up a small, pioneer project “Your Pocket Dua Book: The Essentials”, a copy of which you’re holding right now in your hands. The memorization and recitation of the various Sunnah Dua’s listed in this book will help us sprinkle our day with the

sweet, fragrant Dhikr (remembrance) of Allah (subhanahu wa Ta’ala) and that, combined with the Sunnah aspect of these Dua’s, is inshAllah sure to increase the Barakah, peace and contentment in our lives. May Allah grant us all the Taufiq to become people who remember Him abundantly. Ameen!

Good Morning! So you’ve just woken up, rubbing your eyes wearily. What is the first thing you utter usually? For most of us, it’s either “Crap! Is it day already?!” or a variant of it. As you’ve woken up already and can’t go back to sleep anyway, then why choose such meaningless words to begin your day? We have an idea for you … Why not substitute that phrase with what Rasul Allah (s.a.w) would say when he woke up in the morning?

Gearing Up for the Day

You’ve finally managed to drag yourself out of bed now and are headed first for the washroom to freshen up, mumbling and grumbling all the way. If you really do need to exercise your vocal cords on the way to and from the washroom, why not score some Sawwaab points by reciting the following Duas?

Dua when entering the Washroom:

GنRم Gك Rgggب Yوذ YgggعG kى ا Rن WهYمT ا Gلل اRثR Gآئ ب GخI YثR وGال IخYب I ال

“O Allah , I seek protection in You from the male and female unclean spirits.”

Freshening UpOkay so MashAllah you’ve decided to freshen up for the day the Sunnah way and make Wudu … What can you do to maximize the Sawwab and pleasure of Allah that you earn from this Wudu? Make the Sunnah Duas before and after the Wudu of course!

Dua when starting Wudu:

R Iم ي Rح Tرgال RمنIح Tرgال Rهgالل R م IgسR I ب“(I begin) in the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.”

8

IGنI GطGهkرRي IمYت ال“O Allah, make me among those who turn to You in repentance, and make me among those who are purified.”

Special Amal at the end of Wudu:And here’s a bonus Amal (action) to do after Wudu, with a very special reward mentioned in a Hadith. We’ll mention the reward first, as that always helps the memorization process

… All 8 gates

of Jannah are opened immediately for the person who does this Amal, and he can enter from whichever gate he wants. Now the Amal … Right after you’re done making Wudu, raise your eyes towards the heavens and recite the following Dua thrice.

An Offer by A SaviorIf somebody was to tell you, that just by reciting a few small words 5 times a day, you could earn the intercession of Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w on your behalf, on the Day of Judgement in front of Allah, you’d probably get down on your knees and beg the informer to let you know such super-powerful words. Luckily, our informer, Rasul Allah s.a.w himself, gifted us this beautiful Dua (without us having to get down on our knees at all), which if recited at the end of every Azan, will earn the abovementioned award for the one who recites it.

Dua on completion of Azan:

The House of The Lord

Entering the house of the Sovereign of all sovereigns requires special etiquettes, and one of these etiquettes is to recite the Sunnah Duas when entering and exiting the Masjid … These Duas will attract the special Mercy of Allah towards us for the entire time we stay in the Masjid, and will fill with Barakah our time outside the Masjid.

Dua when entering the Masjid:

GابGوI Gب RىI ا GحI ل WهYمT افIت Gلل اGكR حIمGت Gر I

“O Allah, open the doors of Your Mercy for me.”

Culinary DelightsAnd now we turn to our favorite form of Ibaadat! Eating can indeed be converted into Ibaadat as long as we follow the proper Sunnah manner of eating, and recite the following Duas before and after eating.

Dua before eating:

Rالله RةG ك GرG R اللهR وG عGلى ب م IسR I ب“With the Name of Allah, and with the blessings of Allah (we eat this food).”

16

Page 18: Your Pocket Dua Book: The Essentials

Dua after eating:

Dua in place of starting Dua (if it is missed):For those food-lovers amongst us who dive into their food in a frenzy and do not recover from their euphoric, semi-conscious state of mind for at least a few minutes, and then realize that they forgot to say the Dua before they started eating, Subhan Allah,

17

Page 19: Your Pocket Dua Book: The Essentials

our beloved Prophet Muhammad s.a.w has taught a special Dua which can be recited during eating to make up for the Dua that was missed at the start.

Travelling, Are We?Getting on board a vehicle is something we do multiple times a day. Why not convert this simple, routine act into Ibaadat by reciting the following Dua?

Dua when getting on a vehicle:

Gا هذGا Gن خTرG ل Gس IىRذT IحGانG ال ب YسGنI Rي Gه مYقIرR ن Tا ل Yن وGمGا ك

over it, and to our Lord is our return (after our deaths).”

Dua when starting a journey:Recite the following Dua when you plan to start a journey, to make the special Mercy and blessings of Allah your companions for the whole way!

GكR GصYوIلY وG ب RكG ا WهYمT ب Gلل اYرI ي RسG RكG ا GحYوIلY وG ب I ا

Security ConcernsForget applying for firearm licenses, buying bullet-proof jackets or hiring a pricey security firm to watch your back for you … Read the following Sunnah Duas and enter the protection of Allah subhanahu wa Ta’ala Himself.

Dua for protection when leaving the house:

Allah, without Whose help there is no other force or power.”

Dua when there is danger from some enemy:

After PartyWe all love our friends, don’t we? If all our friends, Allah forbid, got hurt one day, what would be the thing we’d most like to do? We’d want to cure them all and make their pain go away, as fast as possible of course. Just like that, whenever we have a meeting with friends, we all might sin, consciously or unconsciously, through backbiting, slander etc., and hence to erase those sins and snuff out the huge, very “warm” fires these sins ignite for us, we should recite this Dua as compensation at the end of every meeting with friends.

Dua at the end of a meeting with friends:

Sin BusterEven in today’s world, where the concept of sin has almost wholly been devoured by the concept of enjoyment, treachery in the battlefield is still considered a sin, internationally. It is a sin that is deemed to be punishable by the most severe of punishments. In our Deen too, treachery in the battlefield is a major sin. And yet the beauty of our Deen is, that the recitation of this one simple Dua, thrice, is sufficient to absolve a person of all previous sins, even the sin of treachery in the battlefield (according to a Hadith).

Dua to erase previous sins:

Chill PillEver had to hear the phrase “Pop a chill pill” whenever you told someone you were very worried about something? And then you were left to wonder what on Earth a chill pill was? The person who said that to you probably did not know what it was himself, but Rasul Allah s.a.w gave us the following two “chill pills” to soothe us and grant us peace in times of tension or worry. Learn them and recite them to discover the secret of the elusive “chill pill”!

Dua in times of worry (1):

28

Bed TimeYou’re lying in bed and waiting for sleep to come. You do not have the energy to get up and do any more Ibaadat, and yet your profit-maximizing nature demands one last act of Ibaadat (without having to get up of course), one last entry in your book of good deeds. Recite the following Dua to score one more Sunnah before you doze off.

Dua when going to bed:

YتIوYمG مRكG ا IاسR WهYمT ب Gلل اGحIيى I وGا

“O Allah, I live and I die taking Your Name.”

29

Dua if you can’t sleep:After you’re done with all the tossing and turning you could manage, and have decided that you really can’t sleep, please do not swallow a sleeping pill (those things are bad for your health, and guarantee a lousy and drowsy day when you wake up) and instead, recite the following (free and healthy) Dua to ride the expressway to dreamland.

Lost and FoundGoing to the nearest Lost and Found office, or flooding the mailboxes of every single student at your university, are both very effective ways of retrieving lost items indeed. But another extremely effective method is the recitation of the following Dua, which is sure not only to speed up the retrieval process by an extraordinary amount, but also to save you from the worry and tension that usually accompanies such matters.

Dua if something is lost:

Counsel with The Wisest

You’re about to undertake an endeavor and MashAllah you’ve sought the counsel of wise men or women on the matter, and yet your heart is still unable to decide. So to settle this state of your heart, you decide to seek the counsel of the Wisest of the wise, Allah Himself. Counsel with Allah is called Istikhaara, and it is a simple act. All you have to do is make Wudu, pray two Nafl with the intention of Istikhaara, and recite the Istikhaara Dua after completion of the Nafl. The only special thing you do, is that you bring to your mind the matter about which you’re making

Istikhaara, when you recite the “ GرIgمG Iا االGذgه TنG part of ” اthe Dua. And that’s it! That’s all there is to Istikhaara. One important point should be borne in mind though, and that is that the general perception about Istikhaara i.e. that you will see some stark and clear sign in your dreams, or on the road or in the

34

Page 36: Your Pocket Dua Book: The Essentials

skies etc., is incorrect. What you’re looking for, instead, is an inexplicable turning of your heart towards one particular option out of several options, and fixation thereafter on that option. That particular option will InshAllah be the best one for you, chosen by the Creator of all options and opportunities. And now, the Istikhaara Dua:

GكRمI RعRل كG ب YرI ي RخG ت IسG kىI ا Rن WهYمT ا Gلل ا IنRم GكYلG ئ IسG RكG وGا ت GرIدYقR كG ب YرRدIقG ت IسG وGا

If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter, Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me in my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter, then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, and make me satisfied with it.”
