MY STORY

Sarah ParkerUniversity of Exeter, United Kingdom Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health

Going on exchange is an opportunity you’ll never regret! Exeter is a small, quaint English city. It’s so small that you can walk just about everywhere and by the end, I often bumped into familiar faces when out and about. I lived in student accommodation, where there were plenty of opportunities to meet English locals and other exchange students.

The University of Exeter is one of the best in the UK, with an incredible social and sporting culture. A highlight of my experience was playing soccer for the Exeter University Ladies Football Club. The club had weekly sporting and social events, as well as opportunities to play soccer across the UK. We even went on tour to Barcelona to play in the World InterUniversity Championships!

Another great part about studying in the UK was being so close to Europe. I was able to travel to over 20 European countries throughout my exchange, with highlights being spending Christmas in Iceland and New Years in Sweden. I left Exeter with lifelong friends from all over the UK and the world, with memories that I will cherish forever.

MY STORY

Ben Fixter Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Bachelor of Engineering(Electrical)

I was fortunate enough to complete a semester exchange at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore as part of the New Colombo Plan (NCP). Singapore was an amazing country to live in and it was an awesome base for travel around the rest of South East Asia.

The (NCP) community in Singapore is really strong and I felt like part of the family almost immediately. Most weekends we’d either travel, catch up in SP or go to NCP events together. They all had inspiring stories to share which was really motivating and I was able to make some amazing friends.

The NCP events were a great place to make professional contacts and understand more about Australia’s overseas relationships, which I found really interesting too. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) itself was great place to live and study, with great facilities on campus and a high standard of teaching.

In Singapore, my favourite experiences were the national day celebrations, playing AFL for the Singapore Wombats, and the Halloween

festival at Universal Studios. My favourite memories are definitely the overseas trips. Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines are all amazing countries and I met so many interesting people on the road – it was just so much fun. My exchange had its fair share of challenges, but they’ve definitely helped me build up a stronger sense of resilience. It taught me a lot about myself and I’ve definitely grown as a person since coming home.

My experience on exchange has been nothing less than amazing! I decided to go on exchange to Europe because I had never been before and I knew I would be close to so many incredible countries to explore during my program.

I left in August 2019 and first travelled to Italy, France, Belgium and the Netherlands before arriving in Germany, where I would live for the next 12 months. I completed an International Social Work program at the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel.

I highly recommend this university to students studying social work, media and business as they have an amazing selection of classes in English. The International staff and lecturers were incredible, helping and guiding us through every process and organising so many

events, including a trip to Berlin. The program provided me with many contacts and opportunities, which allowed me to complete a 4-month internship in a German agency later in the year.

Overall, going on exchange is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I would recommend to everyone. Since leaving last August, I have visited 16 new countries, attended Oktoberfest in Munich, visited many German Christmas markets, seen Florence and the Machine at the Acropolis in Greece, spent New Year’s in France and made friends from all over the world.

I’m so thankful for UOW guiding me through the beginning stages and giving me the confidence to go on exchange. Don’t think about it, just apply! Trust me, it’s worth it.

Can I afford it?Yes! Studying overseas is more affordable than you think, with many funding options available to assist you.

STUDY OVERSEAS COSTS

While you are away on an exchange program, you continue to pay tuition fees to UOW, not the overseas university. For short-term programs, there may be a program fee required.

Outside of this, you are responsible for paying for your airfares, visas, overseas accommodation and living expenses. Below are some funding options available to assist with the associated costs of undertaking a UOW study overseas program.

TRAVEL GRANTS

Students can apply for a UOW travel grant or receive funding from Australian Government initiatives such as the New Colombo Plan of between $500 and $8,500.*

OS-HELP

The Australian Government offers OS-HELP loans allowing eligible undergraduate students to borrow up to $8,000* for each session of overseas study (maximum of two sessions) to use towards airfares, accommodation and other travel/study expenses. OS-HELP loans are then repaid with your accumulated HELP debt (including HECS) after your graduation from UOW.

CENTRELINK

If you currently receive Austudy or Youth Allowance, you may continue to receive these benefits while you are on exchange. Contact Centrelink for further details.

MY STORY

Chontelle DucrouSummer Program at HAN University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands Bachelor of Primary Education

Completing an International short course was a great way to merge my two favourite things, teaching and traveling. After attending a short course on Inclusive Education in Austria in 2019, I was hooked and wanted to broaden my horizons again. In 2020 I embarked on another short course this time to the Netherlands focusing on Dutch teaching methods and approaches.

One of the reasons I love to travel is being able to immerse yourself in different cultures, broadening your knowledge and exploring history. Although this course was only three weeks long, the organisers ensured we gained a lot of exposure to Dutch culture. We attended the Arnhem Open Air Museum, visited historical buildings including the famous windmills, tried local cuisine and even had the chance to try ice-skating. We also visited Amsterdam, Delft, The Hague, Volendam and Zaanse Schans – locations that really showcase all that the Netherlands has to offer.

I was lucky to complete this course with people from all over the world, who were all extremely friendly and just as passionate about teaching as I am. The academics in particular made this course what it was and were dedicated in making sure we had a rewarding experience. The program organisers made the application process easy and provided ongoing support during the course, and I enjoyed learning from the subject coordinator who was passionate about developing our skills as future teachers. Studying overseas was a truly rewarding experience; it pushed me outside my comfort zone and made me a more confident, open-minded and resourceful person. It’s definitely an experience that has helped shaped me both professionally and personally, and one that I will never forget.

Overseas study opportunities for high achievers

MY STORY

Kristina O’SheaUniversite de la Nouvelle Caledonie, New Caledonia Bachelor of Arts – Bachelor of Laws

As a recipient of the New Colombo Plan scholarship, I was granted the opportunity to live, study and intern for 8 months in New Caledonia.

My experience began with a 5-month study block at the Université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (UNC). This university experience required an adaption to the French administrative system, which was challenging at times, however it also offered enriching classes ranging from French history to a study of Indigenous Kanak language. I appreciated the chance to understand a different university context and was lucky to live on campus amongst other international students, who have become life-long friends.

My NCP scholarship also facilitated French language courses at the language institution CREIPAC, where I studied part-time alongside my university courses. This language training complimented and assisted my uni studies, which were all in French.

The last few months on my exchange experience were spent interning at the Pacific Community (SPC). This intergovernmental organisation conducts humanitarian development projects in the Pacific region, and I gained significant insight into the needs of Pacific nations. Overall, my NCP experience was incredibly rewarding, and I developed important insights both in an academic and career-related sense and in a personal one.

Costa Rica is known for its progressive environmental policies, pristine landscapes and abundant wildlife. With the Caribbean coast on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, it’s a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

I chose to study at the University of Veritas in the capital city of San José and lived with a Costa Rican host family. Fully immersed in language and culture, I was able to improve my Spanish at home, on the street and in the classroom.

I had afternoons free where I was able to explore the city with new friends, viewing street art and dinning in cafes and tapas bars. San José is well known for its nightlife scene, with no shortage of places to enjoy by day or night.

Every weekend I had the opportunity to travel to other parts of Costa Rica. I surfed Santa Teresa, bathed in Baldi hot springs, zip-lined at Monteverde and even spotted a sloth and toucan in the wild.

I would recommend Costa Rica and the short-course program offered by UOW and CIS Australia to any student interested in eco-tourism, Central America or the Spanish language. I fell in love with the country and its people, so much so that I have plans to return and study at Veritas again.

I’m still extraordinarily grateful to this day for my semester exchange at the University of Toronto in Canada. As cliché as it sounds, I learnt a lot about myself and the world around me, including how to cheer as loud as the locals at a Varsity home game. This opportunity allowed me to travel to Hawaii and Mexico before my exchange began, as well the stunning Canada itself while studying.

The University of Toronto is a world class institution and I feel blessed to have been accepted, let alone to have studied at the No.1 ranked University in Canada! The campus is something out of a movie, and both the students and teachers were some of the most caring people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I was

also accepted into the cheer team for basketball season, which was such an incredible experience.

The electric cityscape of Toronto in sun and snow was truly a dream, and made the perfect back drop for my first Thanksgiving and Halloween.

I will forever cherish the friendships I created with my fellow exchange students and locals whilst on exchange – they truly made my trip unforgettable. I would highly recommend the University of Toronto to anyone thinking of studying in Canada, especially if the east coast is somewhere you have on your travel itinerary!
